1 Managing projectsMultiprocessingAer Eects now supports multiprocessing, so i you have additional CPUs and enough memory, when you do aRAM preview or export through the Render Queue, Aer Eects will attempt to render multiple rames at the sametime.

o enable multiprocessing, choose Edit > Preerences > Multiprocessing (Windows) or Aer Eects > Preerences >Multiprocessing (Mac OS), and then select Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously. Te bottom o the Preerencesdialog box shows how many additional processors (in addition to the worst-case scenario o one processor) will beused at the current settings. o increase the number o background processes that can run, decrease Maximum RAMCache Size or install more RAM.

New Memory & Cache preerencesTere are some new preerences in the Memory & Cache preerences dialog box or the Conormed Media Cache. You can now do any o the ollowing:

Speciy a location or the media database. Te media database retains links to all cached media les. Tis mediacache database is shared with Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Encore, and Adobe Soundbooth, so each o these appli-cations can each read to and write rom the same set o cached media les. I you change the location o the data-base rom within any o these applications, the location is updated or the other applications, too. Each applicationcan use its own cache older, but the same database keeps track o them all.

Remove conormed les or ootage no longer on your hard disk by clicking the Clean button.

Speciy a location or the Media Cache where Aer Eects conormed les are stored.

    New Memory & Cache preerences

2 ImportingPhotoshop flesWhen you use the Vanishing Point eature in Photoshop CS3 Extended, you can then use the File > Export For AerEects CS3 (.vpe) command to save the results as a collection o PNG lesone or each planeand a .vpe le thatdescribes the geometry o the scene. You can then import the .vpe le into Aer Eects using File > Import. AerEects uses the inormation in the .vpe le to recreate the scene as a composition containing a camera layer and oneperspective corrected 3D layer or each PNG le.

    Ater Eects CS3 Proessional

Photoshop CS3 Extended can create PSD les that contain video and animation layers. Aer Eects can import theseles just as any other Photoshop les, either as a ootage item with all layers merged together or as a compositionwith each Photoshop layer separate and editable in Aer Eects. (Working with Photoshop video layers requiresQuickime 7.1 or later.)

When you import a Photoshop le as a composition, you can retain editable layer styles or merge layer styles intoootage. When you import only one layer that includes layer styles, you can choose to ignore the layer styles or mergelayer styles into ootage. At any time, you can convert merged layer styles into editable layer styles or each AerEects layer based on a Photoshop ootage item. For more inormation on working with layer styles, see Layer Styleslater in this document.

Importing SWF fles rom Flash CS3 into Ater EectsYou can import SWF les into Aer Eects to composite them with other video or render them as video with ad-ditional creative eects. When Aer Eects imports a SWF le, its internal keyrames are preserved so that you cancontinue to use them or timing other eects. Each SWF le imported into Aer Eects is fattened into a single con-tinuously rasterized layer, with its alpha channel preserved. Continuous rasterization means that graphics stay sharpas they are scaled up.

3 CompositionsMarkersMarkers have been revamped in Aer Eects to oer more unctionality, including the ability to assign FLV cuepoints and parameters to use in Flash CS3. Tere are two types o markers you can use in a project: composition-timemarkers and layer-time markers. Composition-time markers appear in the time ruler o the imeline panel, whereaslayer-time markers appear in the layer-duration bar. Here are some o the changes associated with markers:

You can now have an unlimited number o composition-time markers (previously you were limited to 10).

Composition-time markers now have the same metadata options as layer-time markers, including elds or com-ments and chapter and web links. o edit marker metadata, double-click a composition-time or layer-time markerin the imeline panel.

You can speciy cue points with up to three name/value pairs to be included in an FLV le. o add cue point inor-mation, open the Marker dialog box by double-clicking a composition-time or layer-time marker in the imelinepanel. In the Flash Video Cue Point and Parameters section you can speciy a name ActionScript will use to targetthe cue point embedded in the .FLV, as well as the type o cue point (Event or Navigation) and up to three name/value pairs.

    A. Composition-time markerB. Composition-time marker with cue-point data C. Layer-time markerD. Layer-time marker

    Other composition changes

Tere is a new button in the imeline panel that opens the parent composition that the current composition isnested within.

Te Exposure control in the Composition panel now works or 8-bpc and 16-bpc in addition to 32-bpc.

4 Views and previewsReal-time audio playback during RAM previewAer Eects now has real time audio playback during RAM preview or audio preview. Note that it doesnt work orscrubbing or spacebar playback. You will get real time audio i no eects are applied. In addition, some audio settingshave changed. Audio preview settings (except duration) have been removed rom the Preerences. Sample rate op-

tions are now in the Project Settings dialog box.

5 Layers and propertiesLayer stylesPhotoshop provides a variety o layer stylessuch as shadows, glows, and bevelsthat change the appearance o alayer. Aer Eects can preserve these layer styles when importing Photoshop layers. You can also apply the ollowinglayer styles in Aer Eects: Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel And Emboss, Satin, ColorOverlay, Gradient Overlay, and Stroke. Each layer style has its own collection o properties in the imeline panel.

In addition to the layer styles that add visual elementslike a drop shadow or a color overlayeach layers LayerStyles property group contains a Blending Options property group. You can use the Blending Options settings or

powerul and fexible control over blending operations.

For more inormation on working with layer styles, see the Aer Eects Help system.

Using BrainstormBrainstorm creates multiple temporary variants o your composition and displays them in a grid. You can save anynumber o these variants, apply one to the current composition, or redo the Brainstorm operation using only thevariants that you choose as input.

Brainstorm uses genetic algorithms to mutate and select property values used as input into each Brainstorm opera-tion. You decide which variants to include as input to each generation and how much mutation (randomness) to use.Brainstorm can help you explore creative possibilities, or it can help you quickly narrow in on a particular desiredlook rom a range o variations.

With Brainstorm, you can rapidly accomplish the ollowing:

Compare the results o multiple values or a single property so that you can nd the value that works best.

Explore the results o randomly modiying any number o properties to achieve a creative result.

o get started with Brainstorm, select one or more properties or property groups in the imeline panel, and click the

Brainstorm button at the top o the imeline panel. o learn more about Brainstorm, see the Aer Eects Helpsystem.

More layer-related eaturesNo limits on In/Out points or stills, lights, cameras, and time-remapped layers: In previous versions o Aer E-ects, the In and Out points o certain layer types were limited in time by the duration o the layer. Tat limit nolonger applies. Just drag the In or Out point o a still, light, camera, or time-remapped layer wherever you want it tobe with no limits.

rimmed layers are more visible when the user interace is set to a darker scheme.

In the imeline panel, you can now select top-level groups like ransorm, Masks, and Eects and copy and pastethem onto other layers. Tat means, i you want to copy all the transorm properties rom one layer to anotherlayer, or example, you no longer have to select each individual property. Instead, you can simply select the rans-orm group and copy it.

Tere are now 15 label colors available to assign to layers in your project. You can also choose to assign no labelcolor. o apply label colors, select one or more layers, and then choose Edit > Label.

When you double-click a shape tool to reset a shape or create a new deault shape, the shape properties are alsoreset and applied to the next shape drawn.

When working with a time-remapped layer in the ime Remap graph, the speed at the time needle as displayed inthe Ino panel is now in sec/sec foating point instead o timecode/sec or more precision.

6 AnimationAnimating with Puppet toolsUse the Puppet tools to quickly add natural motion to raster images and vector graphics, including still images, shapes, and text characters. Te Puppet eect works by deorming part o an image according to the positions o pinsthat you place and move. Tese pins dene what parts o the image should move, what parts should remain rigid, and

what parts should be in ront when parts overlap.

Each Puppet tool is used to place and modiy a specic kind o pin:

Puppet Pin tool : Use this tool to place and move Deorm pins.

Puppet Overlap tool : Use this tool to place Overlap pins, which indicate which parts o an image should ap-pear in ront o others when distortion causes parts o the image to overlap one another.

Puppet Starch tool : Use this tool to place Starch pins, which stien parts o the image so that they are distortedless.

You can manually animate an image with the Puppet tools, or record animation by sketching motion. Youll nd thePuppet tools in the ools panel. Learn more about how to animate with Puppet tools in the Aer Eects Help system.

Puppet mesh created by placing Deorm pins (let), and result o dragging a Deorm pin

Graph Editor improvementsWhen snapping a keyrame to a value at which there are multiple other keyrames, a yellow snap line is now drawn

between all keyrames at that value (in Aer Eects 7.0 the snap line was drawn inconsistently and oen includedonly some o the keyrames at the value). Dotted lines also help you line up your keyrames, particularly when youhave keyrames that are o close but dierent values.

In the imeline panel you can now enable the Graph Editor toggle on Boolean and popup properties. Propertieswith the Graph Editor toggle enabled are displayed in the Graph Editor when you click the Properties button atthe bottom o the Graph Editor and choose Show Graph Editor Set.

A bug in Aer Eects 7.0 made or some unexpected snapping behavior in the Graph Editor when using shortcutkeys like J and K to go to the next visible keyrame or layer marker. Te behavior has been xed so that shortcutkeys and Shi-dragging only snap to interesting points displayed in the Graph Editor.

    Motion blur changes

2D motion blur previously used 16 steps at best quality. Now it uses an adaptive number o steps based on thespeed o each layer. Tis will speed up motion blurred rendering or layers that dont move too ast (i.e. ones thatlooked good beore), and should make ast layers look much better (though render a bit more slowly).

Te initial deault value or Motion Blur shutter phase is now -90 degrees. You can alter that value by choosingComposition > Composition Settings, and clicking the Advanced tab. Aer Eects remembers the last value youused and uses that as the new deault.

  • 8/7/2019 AE CS3

    8/12

    Ater Eects CS3 Proessional

Tere are two new motion blur settings: Samples Per Frame and Adaptive Sample Limit. Samples Per Frame con-trols the number o motion blur samples or 3D layers, shape layers, and certain eects. 2D layer motion automati-cally uses more samples per rame when needed, up to the Adaptive Sample Limit. You can adjust these settings inthe Advanced tab o the Composition Settings dialog box.

Motion blur no longer cuts corners or non-linear motion when rotation is not animated.

7 ColorAer Eects now gives you more advanced tools or color managing your ootage and projects. Color managementprovides many benets. With color management the colors in imported images appear as the creators o the imagesintended; you have more control over how colors are blended within your project, or everything rom motion blur toantialiasing; and the movies that you create will look as you intend when viewed on devices other than your com-puter monitor.

Youll nd color settings in the Project Settings dialog box, and in a new Color Management tab in the Interpret Foot-age dialog box and the Output Module Settings dialog box. Color management in Aer Eects now includes supportor the ollowing:

Color management o individual ootage items: Te Interpret Footage dialog box (File > Interpret Footage > Main)has an updated tabbed design that includes new color management options. On the Color Management tab youcan view color prole inormation, as well as choose a color prole and speciy other color management optionsor your ootage. For Cineon ootage, click the Cineon Settings button on the Color Management tab or manualCineon options, or assign one o the many lm negative proles that ship with Aer Eects.

Disable color management or ootage items: You can prevent the conversion o colors into the working colorspace or a single ootage item by selecting Preserve RGB in the Color Management tab o the Interpret Footagedialog box or the Output Module Settings dialog box. Tis option preserves RGB numbers; color appearance is notpreserved. urning o color management or a specic ootage item is useul when the ootage item is not intendedor visual display, but is instead intended or use as a control layeror example, a displacement map.

Support or ootage with ICC proles: When you import ootage that has an embedded ICC prole, the prole isautomatically used in rendering when color management is enabled unless you assign a dierent prole to the oot-

age in the Interpret Footage dialog box.

Speciy an output color prole: You can control color management or each output item using the Output ModuleSettings dialog box. Te output color prole or a render item determines what calculations are perormed whenconverting a rendered compositions colors rom the projects working color space to the color space or the outputmedium. I a working space has not been setthat is, i color management is not on or the projectthen you can-not speciy an output color prole.

Color prole display in the Project panel: When you select a ootage item in the Project panel, its color prole isdisplayed in the Ino portion o the panel.

Installing custom color management proles: Aer Eects interpretation rules can access custom color manage-ment proles installed on your hard drive. Once installed, the prole can be assigned automatically by creating aninterpretation rule that reers to the prole by name.

Display color management: When color management is enabled, you can disable the automatic project workingspace to monitor transorm by deselecting View > Use Display Color Management. You can also simulate the looko your output on a particular playback device by choosing View > Simulate Output and selecting one o the pre-sets. o create your own preset, choose Custom.

Tip: When Display Color Management is enabled, the Show Channel icon at the bottom o the Composition, Footage, and Layer viewers has a yellow crosshair.

8 TextPer-character 3DYou can now move, scale, and rotate individual characters in three dimensions using 3D animator properties. Teseproperties become available when you enable per-character 3D properties or the layer. Position, Anchor Point, andScale gain a third dimension; and two additional Rotation properties (X Rotation and Y Rotation) become available.

Te single Rotation property or 2D layers is renamed to Z Rotation.

Enabling per-character 3D properties causes each character in the text layer to behave like an individual 3D layerwithin the text layer, which behaves like a precomposition with collapsed transormations. Per-character 3D layersintersect with other 3D layers ollowing the standard rules or 3D precompositions with collapsed transormations.

A per-character 3D layer is designated by a special icon in the layers Switches column.

o learn more about using per-character 3D animation, see the Aer Eects Help system.

More text eaturesYou can now opt to have the Character and Paragraph panels and the Paint and Brush ips panels automaticallyopen when you select the ext or Paint tool, respectively. o automatically open panels, select the ext or Paint tool

and enable the Auto-Open Panels option in the Options area o the ools panel. Te next time you select the tool, the relevant panels will open.

Te Font popup menu in the Character panel is now a listbox with a scrollbar, making it easier to navigate througha long list o onts. When the popup menu is active, you can use the arrow keys or mouse wheel to scroll throughthe list. Pressing the Enter key selects a ont, and the Esc key cancels out o the menu.

When working with the Color Picker rom the Character panel, you can now preview your color selections byenabling the Preview checkbox. Also, there is a new Eyedropper tool in the Color Picker that lets you sample colorsrom anywhere on your screen.

Tip: Youll also see the new Preview checkbox when the Color Picker is opened rom the imeline or Efect Controlspanels.

In previous versions o Aer Eects, Create Outlines would create a new solid layer containing a mask or each

character. Now it creates a shape layer instead. A separate shape is created or each character, so you can manipu-late them individually.

When youre done editing a text layer, you can now press Ctrl + Enter (Windows) or Command + Return (MacOS) to commit your changes.

When entering a block o text, the shortcut Shi + Enter (Windows) or Shi + Return (Mac OS) now enters a socarriage return. A so carriage return creates a line break without creating a paragraph break.

9 Drawing and paintingShapes and shape layersShape layers are a new layer type that let you create geometric primitives like lines, circles, curves, and polygons. You

can apply strokes, lls, and other shape eects, and you can animate almost any property o a shape layer.

Shape layers contain vector graphics objects called shapes. By deault, a shape consists o a path, a stroke, and a ll.

You create a shape layer by drawing in the Composition panel with a shape tool or the Pen tool. You can then addshape attributes to existing shapes using the Add menu in the ools panel or in the imeline panel. You can also cre-ate new shapes within that shape layer.

A shape group is a collection o shape attributes: paths, lls, strokes, path operations, and other groups. Each grouphas its own blending mode and its own set o transorm properties. By assembling shapes into groups, you can workwith multiple shapes simultaneouslysuch as scaling all shapes in the group by the same amount or applying thesame stroke to each shape. You can even place individual shapes or individual shape attributes within their owngroups to isolate transormations.

Te shape tools are the Rectangle , Rounded Rectangle , Ellipse , Polygon , and Star tools.

10 Eects and animation presetsTere are a number o improvements and new eatures related to eects and animation presets, including the ollow-ing:

When you copy and paste an eect rom the Eects Control panel, it now behaves as it does when you copy andpaste the eect rom the imeline panel. Tat is, changes in eect parameters over time are copied and pasted. In

previous versions o Aer Eects, copying rom the Eects Control panel would copy values as a snapshot in time.Tis resolves issues with copying and pasting the Color Prole Converter, among other eects.

Te ollowing eects have been converted to 32-bpc: Remove Color Matting (with a new Clipping control to over-or under-range values), Solid Composite, Fractal Noise, Linear Color Key, Beam, Ellipse, Compound Blur, AudioSpectrum, and Audio Waveorm.

Youll nd new animation presets in the 3D ext and Shape Layer categories.

Te Color Picker dialog box or all eect controls now has a Preview checkbox. When preview is enabled, theComposition or Layer panel will re-render as you change values.

A new option in the Clip parameter o the Levels eect toggles output behavior based on project bit depth. In theClip o Output Black or Clip o Output White parameter, choose O For 32 bpc Color.

Te Gamma slider in the Exposure eect has been renamed Gamma Correction and its behavior has changed.Higher numbers make the image lighter; lower numbers make it darker. Te deault value is 1.00. Te new sliderbehavior is opposite the behavior in previous versions o Aer Eects. Projects using the Exposure eect that werecreated in previous versions o Aer Eects will still use the old behavior.

Obsolete entries have been removed rom the Conversion ype pop-up menu in the Cineon Conversion eect.Projects created in previous versions o Aer Eects that use the now-obsolete conversion types will still be sup-ported.

Te new ritone eect alters an images color inormation by mapping bright, dark, and midtone pixels to colorsyou select. Its like the int eect, except with midtone control. Te Blend With Original slider in the eect speciesthe intensity o the eect. ritone works with 8-bpc, 16-bpc, and 32-bpc color.

When applying the Lens Blur eect, you can now opt to repeat edge pixels. Repeating edge pixels lets you blur the

contents o the layer while keeping the edges o the layer sharp.Te Overfow parameter in the Fractal Noise eect now deaults to Allow HDR Results (previously it deaulted toClip). Overfow remaps the values that all outside o the grayscale range o 01.

11 ExpressionsLink shapes to other shapes using expressionsYou can now link the shapes o masks, shape layers, and paint strokes to each other using expressions. For example, you can link a paint stroke shape to a mask shape. Create a paint stroke and then create a mask. Select the paintstrokes Path property, and then choose Animation > Add Expression. Drag the expression pick whip rom thepaint strokes Path property to the Mask Path property. Te paint stroke will ollow the mask path.

Show Expression Editor when add an expression in Graph EditorWhen you add an expression to a property while working in the Graph Editor, the Expression Editor is now automat-ically opened so you can view and edit the expression. Tis saves the step o having to choose Show Expression Editorrom the Choose Graph Editor ype and Options menu.

New expression gives access to rendered pixelsTe new .sampleImage() expression gives you access to rendered pixels. Te .sampleImage() expression can be usedor automated color correction and matching tasks. Use the expression as ollows:

    sampleImage(point, radius = [.5, .5], postEffect=true, t=time)

    Return type: Array [4].

Argument type: point is an Array [2], radius is an Array [2], postEect is a Boolean, and t is a Number.

Samples the color and alpha channel values o a layer and returns the average alpha-weighted value o the pixelswithin the specied distance o the point as an array: [red, green, blue, alpha]. I postEect is true, the sampledvalues are or the layer aer masks and eects have been rendered; i postEect is alse, the sampled values areor the layer beore masks and eects have been rendered. Te input value pointis in layer space; the point [0,0]is the center o the top-le pixel in the layer. Te input value radius species the horizontal and vertical distancerom the sample center to the edges o the sampled rectangle. Te deault value samples one pixel.

Tis example samples a rectangle 4 pixels wide and 3 pixels high, centered around a point 100 pixels down andthe to the right o the upper-le corner o the layer:

    thisComp.layer(1).sampleImage([100, 100], [2, 1.5], false, time)

12 Rendering and exportingReviewing movies with Clip Notes commentsUse Clip Notes to submit a movie to reviewers or comments. When you render a movie or Clip Notes comments,a copy o the movie or a link to the movie is included in an Adobe PDF le. Te movie can be in Windows Media(Windows only) or Quickime ormat.

Composition-time markers are included with the movie as comments, so you can submit questions to reviewers orsolicit comments about specic parts o the movie. A reviewer then exports the comments to a le and sends the leback to you. When you import the comments, the reviewers comments appear in the comments eld o markersplaced in the imeline panel.

You render and export a movie or Clip Notes comments using the render queue in the same way that you renderother kinds o movies, though the export options are more limited than or most ormats intended or nal output.

o learn more about working with Clip Notes, see the Aer Eects Help system.
