Be welcoming The Bendigo Business Council is incredibly proud to welcome Jayson Tayeh to our team. Many of you will know Jayson from Café Cortille where he has earned a reputation as an innovative, entrepreneurial business leader. Jayson joins us as our Manager of Member Engagement and is an asset for you to better connect with other members and opportunities.

“In joining the Bendigo Business Council I am incredibly inspired to further develop a collaborative environment within our local businesses. I look forward to working with all of our existing members in this space, as well as welcome our new members to the BBC network. I know that together, we can continue to improve the prospects of the Bendigo business community” – Jayson Tayeh.

Be a contributor Bendigo Business Council’s advocacy working groups contribute strong leadership for a vibrant and prosperous Bendigo.

Vibrant Central Bendigo is an advocacy group, assembled under the guidance of Margot Spalding and Vanessa Hicks, auspiced by the Bendigo Business Council. This group was established ensuring it had representation from all areas of retail including the hotelier’s industry, café and bars, clothing and fashion, essentials, sporting and retail, arts and entertainment, small and medium business, local and national chains, city centre residents, student bodies and local government.

Our initial objective was to identify means to reinvigorate the retail sector within the City Of Greater Bendigo. Our goal moving forward is to inject colour, movement, beauty, excitement and energy into the CBD through a focus on 4 key elements; CBD Beautification, Art Activation, Retail Support and Events.

Events offer a host of economic and social benefits to communities. They foster community pride, teach people new things, and strengthen relationships. The Bendigo Street Festival series falls under the events umbrella. We will continue to liaise with, collaborate with others to deliver events or independently deliver events within the CBD.

Chancery Lane, Bendigo.

Master Class event in Bendigo.

Be collaborativeArcade Activation – Janine Coffey (Student of Urban & Rural Environmental Planning)

The Central Business District of Bendigo boasts many arcades and laneways, providing a unique network of pedestrian linkages that help to dissect the commercial blocks within the City Centre. Examples of this include Chancery Lane, Backhaus Arcade and Killian’s Walk. Laneways provide opportunity for local traders, cultural enrichment and economic development. Simply look to the success and business opportunities that have resulted from the activation of the privately owned Chancery Lane; a destination for locals and tourists.

Backhaus Arcade, already home to an eclectic mix of business’, can become a local destination. The arcade has the potential of improved competitive appeal and economic return; providing a sense of local community, by becoming a shared local destination designed for social and financial interaction. Simple changes to the use of the laneways across our CBD will increase business opportunities, property values, return on investment, foot traffic, passive surveillance and opportunities for places for people to pause. Simple changes for Backhaus Arcade include, but are not limited to:

• TherecentadditionofoutsidediningforWholefood’sKitchen and merchandising outside of Organics Bendigo; these initiatives have created a new vibrancy to the arcade space.

• Improvedsensorystimuliwithartinstallations–both permanent and temporary. As a result of trader talks the City of Greater Bendigo are providing seed funding to help initiate this, resulting in a collaboration between Maree Tonkin (COGB), Kristian Häggblom (La Trobe University Visual Creative Arts Faculty) and Julie Andrews (Artist), to prepare a proposal for future art installations.

Visual merchandising is an initiative that is currently being undertaken in Killian’s Walk; this activity will help to better engage pedestrians, providing for a more stimulating experience, a reason to pause and an improved opportunity for interaction. The merchandising will also improve the presentation of the arcade, providing an improved opportunity for the marketing of the currently vacant shops. Landlords, online and home-based start-ups and businesses are encouraged to make contact with Bendigo Business Council if they believe that they can benefit from this initiative.

The conversion of arcades from a place of thoroughfare, to a space to pause is in line with the City of Greater Bendigo’s vision to be the Most Livable Regional City. By creating an open space for locals, business owners and operators, staff and students to gather, to share time with others over locally purchased meals and coffee, or by simply providing a safe and comfortable space to reflect on the day - as people attract people. The activation of the arcades will build a more vibrant community. The cities economic opportunities will improve, property values will increase, rental returns will strengthen and consumers will find more value with their dollars spent. Increased contribution to the health and wellbeing of the community will be evident; by providing stronger pedestrian linkages, an increased opportunity to walk, incidental exercise, passive surveillance and improved safety.

Be excellent Clare Fountain set up her business, Sorted4Life in 2000, to help fill a gap in the market for practical and do-able support for small business and community groups. Clare speaks the Bendigo Business Council language. Her vision is to build stronger communities, supported by successful businesses.

Sorted4Life won the 2016 Professional Service of the Year Award (B2B: Small) at the Bendigo Business Excellence Awards in May. The recognition Clare and her team received was long overdue. Sorted4Life’s clients have found their business professionalism and passionate community values to be second to none.

We caught up with Clare after the awards and discussed the impact that a Bendigo Business Council Membership has made on Sorted4Life.

“In my experience to be a successful business owner in a regional town you need to be well connected. ‘It’s not what you know, but who you know’ is a phrase I commonly hear. I have found that the Bendigo Business Council provides the opportunity to meet new people at their networking events, as well as at their larger formal events.

What you get out of these events is entirely up to you but they provide a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people, all in one spot. I would recommend all new members attend as many events as they can and make the most of the networking opportunities.

Wining the 2016 Professional Service of the Year Award has been a very humbling experience for me. It is the first time we have applied for an award, so were delighted to be named as a finalist and then again on the night – winner. Since the awards night the messages of support from Sorted4Life clients and associates has been quite overwhelming. We have been working very hard over the past 16 years to deliver a quality product and service. This opportunity has created momentum for us to continue to grow and expand our effectiveness within our regional business community.”

Congratulations again to Clare Fountain and Sorted4Life. To find out more about participating in the 2017 Bendigo Business Excellence Awards head to our website or call Jacinta Mangan at the BBC office today on (03) 5442 7816.
