    Self advocacy This happens when an individual

    affected is able to raise his or her

    concerns with the system involved. It can be at the workplace, in a

    community etc.

    This works well when the individualsare assertive.

    Mediation When change to a situation cannot be

    achieved through direct and

    exclusive engagement of the twoparties.

    Mediation can be used as an

    alternative to facilitate the processof change to the status quo.

    process This is a formal process which is set

    up in some systems. E.g in courts.

    Regulatory Services Some organisations are empowered bylaw to regulate and oversee certain

    services or facilities.

    The Copyright Society of Malawi(COSOMA) and the Malawi

    Communications Regulatory Authority(MACRA).

    Legal assistance An advocate my pursue legal assistancethrough litigation in a Court of Law to havetheir concerns addressed.

    Examples: Public Affairs Committee (PAC)and Joy Radio against a presidential ban onthe Third Term-related demonstrationsand MACRAs directive on live broadcastsrespectively.

    Legislative action(Lobbying)

    The Access to Information campaignchampioned by the Media Institute of

    Southern Africa Malawi Chapter(MISA - Malawi) is an example oflegislative action as an advocacy style.

    Media

    This is one of the most familiar stylesin use by advocates in Malawi. Forinstance the issue of misuse of public

    funds usually starts with the media.

    Use of media is meant to bring a certainissue to the attention of the public.

    Protest The Constitution of Malawi section 38guarantees liberty to hold peaceful and

    orderly public protest. Through this, members of the public can

    participate in an advocacy campaign. The aim is to put pressure on public

    offices or a private sector operator to

    change policy or practice. UNIMA students and lecturers on media freedom stand off.

    Civil disobedience

    Difference with a protest is that civildisobedience is illegal

    It violates the existing laws and those

    involved in it must accept the risk ofthe consequences they would facethrough their actions.

    This is just for knowledge, we are notencouraged to use this style.
