History and Curriculum
March 9, 2012
History • Founded by former Dean George Kozmetsky
in 1995. The first class graduated in May
1996.
• The mission of the MSTC Program is to
combine cutting-edge technology,
entrepreneurship and education to bridge the
gap between ideas and needs in the
marketplace resulting in the creation of new,
innovative ventures.
• Note that the program is about
commercialization of technological
innovations in startups but also new product
lines in established businesses.
History–continued
• The program was housed in IC2 Institute from
its inception, but for many of its years it had a
difficult time meeting the quality standards of
the University.
• In 2010, it was moved by the Provost to the
McCombs School.
• McCombs has invested in the program:
Better recruiting and higher admissions standards;
Better classroom and on-line technology;
Curriculum reform; and
Staffing (more tenure-track faculty).
History–continued
• Now—no more problems with the University.
• Student quality and class size both have
increased.
• Student satisfaction has increased:
Exit survey question: As of today, how likely are
you to recommend the MSTC Program to a friend or
colleague?
Definitely yes = 5; definitely no = 1
Percent of 5s & 4s
• 2008 = 44%
• 2009 = 74%
• 2010 = 70%
• 2011 = 88%
