The Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, was once thought to be the trail of a mythical fire fox dashing through the snow. COURTESY OF PHOTO BY CRAIG MELLISH W ith many travel plans postponed this year, let NJTV take you on a journey to a little-understood land — Arabia. Military-trained writer and photographer Levinson Wood is your guide through challenging environments and remote corners, immersing himself in the region’s cultures to reveal unique and powerful insights for himself and viewers at home. Arabia with Levinson Wood (Thursday, December 10 at 8pm) begins on the Syria and Iraq border, a location that has faced many challenges including the constant threat of an ISIS attack. Ever been to the largest sand desert in the world? Witness it firsthand as Wood travels through what’s known as Rub al Khali, or The Empty Quarter, the world’s largest sand sea. Roughly the size of France, it touches the countries of Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, and it’s known for being especially daunting and inhospitable, besting kings, adventurers and nomads for thousands of years. An arduous journey on camels sees us through Oman’s Shofar Mountains, Saudi Arabia, Syria and the warzone of Yemen, where Wood does his best to understand each country’s culture and the impact of conflict on the people who live there. To conclude his travels, Wood heads to the Holy Lands. First, a visit to Petra, Jordan, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world. He tops it off with a trip to Bethlehem, where he spends Christmas and Jerusalem. Want to continue travelling, but keep it closer to home? Check out Ken Burns: The National Parks (Sunday, December 20 at 4pm) and explore the beauty and grandeur of America’s magnificent parks, from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska. The Western Front, Christmas, 1914. Out of the violence a silence, then a song. A German soldier

steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, peace. A remarkable true story told in the words and songs of the men who lived it.
