VIRTUAL WEB SITE

• THE BROOKLYN CHILDREN’S MUSEUM VIRTUAL WEB SITE OFFERS CHILDREN MANY AT HOME ACTIVITIES. THIS IS A GREAT WAY FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO ARE NOT ABLE TO ACCESS THE MUSEUM PHYSICALLY.

ONSITE FIELD TRIP

As soon as we entered the museum, we saw this beautiful stream like tunnel which was carrying the water all the way down. We saw the mill wheel and some big rocks. It was so creative and beautiful.

WHO LIVES AT THE POND(VISUAL )

On our way out, we were greeted by a pond with a range of animals in their natural habitat. The plants and the trees in this pond provide both food and shelter for the animals that live there.

ON SITE FIELD TRIPKINESTHETIC (SENSORY ROOM)

The Sensory Room was an inclusive space where children with special needs could engage and explore their senses. The interactive equipment provides a multisensory experience with visual, auditory, tactile, vestibular, and gross motor activities.

ON SITE FIELD TRIP (AUDITORY)

The museum had a variety of animal sounds that we were able to hear. Some of the sounds included daytime animals sounds, and others nighttime. Children are able to get an chance to differentiate between nighttime animals, and daytime.

ON SITE FIELD TRIP (KINESTHETIC )

We created our very own sea shell you pick the size, texture, shape, and then choose different colors to decorate. After you create your shell you can display along with the other children's artwork & be able to see how they use their imagination!

BECOMING SCIENTISTS OURSELVES!

• Each group member participated in a plant growing activity

• Shakhlo grew red beans, Olga & Joana grew lima beans.

• We made careful scientific observations and consistently kept a record of our plant for 30 days.

• In the process, we learned through our own experiences and through each other.

SHAKHLO’S RED BEANS

• I planted 3 red beans and my beans sprouted after 7 days.

• First I let the beans soak in the water, then I made a hole and carefully placed my 3 red beans.

• I kept my plant near my desk closer to the heater and watered my plant with 3 oz of water ( 1 Dixie cup) consistently, each morning for 30 days.

• Out of 3 beans, 1 did not sprouted successfully but the other two gave out its leaf and grew taller each day.

• Overall, I was happy with my result.

OLGA’S PLANT OBSERVATION• I PLANTED MY LIMA BEAN IN A PLASTIC CUP, I MADE A LITTLE GROOVE

TO PLACE THE SEED IN AND COVERED THE WHOLE THING WITH SOIL.

• I DIDN’T LEAVE MY LIMA BEAN IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, IT WAS ON MY SHELF, UNDER MY LAMP ALWAYS FOR 15 MINUTES.

• MY SEED BEGAN TO SPROUT ON THE SEVENTH DAY.

• I WATERED MY LIMA BEAN EVERY OTHER DAY, WHEN I WAS WATERING IT EVERYDAY I SAW THE SOIL WAS TOO MOIST AND I DIDN’T WANT THE SEED TO DIE.

• OVER THE COURSE OF WEEKS, IT GREW TALLER & FORMED MORE LEAVES.

JOANA’S LIMA BEAN OBSERVATION• First, I gathered a handful of lima beans and soaked them in lukewarm water for 1 hour.

• next i observed my lima beans and collected data about the appearance of the beans after 1 hour of soaking.

• the beans increased in size and the outer coating began to shed. i noticed some of the lima beans separated into two halves or two cotyledons.

• i decided to investigate further! I split one of the many seeds in half and discovered a tiny white stem (which resembled a tail) growing.

• i gathered my materials: Ziploc bag, paper towel, water, tape and my two germinating lima beans.

• i soaked the paper towel in water and gently patted it down, making sure no water is dripping but the paper towel was still soaked with water.

• i inserted the heavily damped paper towel into the zip loc bag and gently placed two lima beans directly onto of the wet paper towel.

• i taped the ziplock bag with my two germinating lima beans, onto my sunny living room window.

• i collected daily observations and noticed my beans did not sprout until day 9. it also has been snowing a lot.

• over time, condensation built up inside of the Ziploc bag. i also did not need to re-dampen the paper towel, since it remained very moist.

• a few days later the roots began to spread out and small leaves began to form and before a few days later stem suddenly appeared with more leaves.

SIMILARITIES BOTH JOANA & SHAKHLO USED

MORE THEN ONE SEED.

OLGA & SHAKHLO’S PLANT SPROUTED AFTER 7 DAYS.

OLGA & JOANA USED LIMA BEANS.

ALL PLANTS WERE WATERED.

DIFFERENCES

• OLGA ONLY PLANTED 1 SEED.

• JOANA’S SEEDS STARTED TO CHANGE IN APPEARANCE AFTER AN HOUR.

• SHAKHLO USED A RED KIDNEY BEAN

• SHAKHLO PLANTED HER SEEDS IN A STYROFOAM CUP, WHILE OLGA PLANTED HERS IN A PLASTIC CUP.

• SHAKHLO’S KIDNEY BEANS GREW TALLER STEMS THEN OLGA'S. DIFFERENCE IN BEANS MIGHT BE THE REASON.

• OLGA USED A LAMP AS HER SUNLIGHT FOR HER BEAN

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

• IN THIS EXPERIMENT, EACH MEMBER OF THE GROUP WAS OBLIGATED TO MAKE OBSERVATIONS ON THEIR PLANTS

• MAKING A NOTE OF SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES AT THE END OF THE 30 DAY PERIOD

• SCIENTIFIC OBSERVATION IS THE CENTRAL ELEMENT OF THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD OR PROCESS. THE CORE SKILL OF SCIENTIST IS TO MAKE OBSERVATION AND THAT IS WHAT WE DID IN OUR PLANT EXPERIMENT.

• THE SKILL OF OBSERVATION GRANTS US A BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND LEARNING IN SCIENCE.

• WE WERE ABLE TO APPLY OUR SKILLS OF PREDICTING COMPARING AND CONTRASTING, ORGANIZING DATA THROUGH THIS EXPERIMENT.
