FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKBy Pastor Anita Warner

During the Easter season, I preached a sermon series on Acts and the Beloved Community. The book of Acts claims that before he ascended into heaven, Jesus began to teach his disciples. The claim in Acts is that Jesus continued to teach his followers through the Holy Spirit – and Jesus continues to teach us through the gifts and power of the Spirit.

The Spirit brings truth, hope, and transformation through reconciliation. The Spirit writes new stories out of broken old stories. The Spirit leads God’s people in history to renew their communities through witnessing and living God’s love and reconciliation in concrete ways.

We’re going to keep telling stories of transformation. You will hear some stories from our young people who are affirming their baptism in the rite of confirmation. You will hear other people tell how this church has invited them to experience grace, to explore faith and thought, and to engage with the community. Let’s keep listening to one another and to these stories.

“If you continue in my word,” Jesus said, “you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32). Free to see that Christ has torn down the dividing walls. Free to live into new relationships that build bridges between people. Free to give thanks and celebrate the revival that comes when we dare to move outside the confines of our old habits.

These stories we tell and hear, and the invitation of Christ in the scriptures, are inviting us to widen the circle and participate in the Spirit’s work of creating the Beloved Community in our own time and place. The Transforming Church team has a story to tell about this. Come to the Fireside Chat on Pentecost Sunday to share the new story we will write together!

FIRESIDE CHATPENTECOST SUNDAY, JUNE 4, 11 AMAfter celebrating our confirmands, we will gather together to share an exciting vision of concrete new outreach in our community.  Come to hear and contribute to the work of the Spirit in and through us!

HONORING MARC NORTHCOTT’S MINISTRYFollowing worship on June 18, the congregation is invited to share refreshments and some words of thanks to Marc Northcott for his service as Director of Drama Ministries at Advent.

SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL

MEETING JUNE 18, 2017 AT 11:00 AM

As many of you know, we were fortunate enough to have a Music & Worship Arts Director candidate visit with us on May 11-14.  In order for our church to attract excellent candidates to our ministry, Advent Lutheran Church conducted a nationwide search. Knowing that candidates from outside California will experience sticker-shock at our housing prices, Advent would like to provide housing assistance for such candidates.  To achieve this, the Advent Executive Committee of the Church Council has called for a Special Congregational Meeting on June 18, 2017 at 11:00 AM. The purpose of the Meeting is to consider a loan from the Mission Investment Fund (MIF) to purchase a condo or other suitable housing for use by a lay staff person.

SAFE COMMUNITY TRAININGJune 25, 1:00 – 2:30 PMIf you have never participated, we hope you will be a part of our Safe Community training this year. Safe Community training is recommended for all people who will work with children and/or youth, and it is required for certain roles in working with children and youth. As a part of Advent’s “Growing Young” movement, we hope many more adults in our congregation will participate in ways large and small in developing relationships with children and youth. These relationships encourage and build and form faith in everyone, children, youth and adults alike!

Safe Community training supports a positive and safe environment for everyone and has been highly rated by past participants. Our Safe Community Policy states that adults need to renew their training every four years, and youth under 18 need to renew their training every two years.

JUSTICE FOR WOMEN STUDYSundays at 11:00 AM beginning July 9Our whole church is invited into a focused conversation on women and justice in church and society. A study with seven modules will be used, entitled Faith, Sexism, Justice: Conversations toward a Social Statement. Responses are received by August 31 will be considered and incorporated into the ELCA Social Statement that will be presented to Churchwide Assembly for adoption in 2019.

July 9 Why do we need to talk together?

July 16 What problems do women face, and what does justice require?

July 23 How is sexism personal, and how are we the body of Christ together?

July 30 What does economic sexism look like, and how can we seek equity for all?

Aug. 6 How can we address violence against women and girls?

Aug. 13 Why do words and images for God matter?

Aug. 20 How do we challenge the misuse of Scripture against women and girls?

The Women’s Spirituality Circle that meets Thursdays, 10:00 – 11:30 AM, may also take up this study.

GIZMO THE CHURCH CAT by the Rev. Lee Tyler

Our dear church cat, Gizmo has passed away. He was 17 years old, blind in one eye, going deaf, and becoming more frail. He did, however, live a long and productive life with many adventures. Over ten years ago, Gizmo became a part of the Advent family. He wandered in and decided that it was a good place to live and work. During his time at Advent, Gizmo patrolled the grounds, attended staff meetings, attended Bible study and other events. He was known to walk people to their cars late at night. He enjoyed people and was an important part of the life of the church. Three years ago, Gizmo retired and moved to the country to become a barn cat. He spent his declining years surrounded by other friendly cats, and received treats every evening at the kitty buffet. To the end he was a gentleman. Thank you God for entrusting us with this wonderful creature. May he rest in peace in Cat Heaven sleeping on God’s bed.

MORGAN HILL SAFE CAR PARK-A PILOT PROJECT

by Marcia Nelson, Community Connections Chair

Since late last year a group of concerned people from local faith communities have been meeting in conjunction with the Morgan Hill Police Department, the City of Morgan Hill, County of Santa Clara and MHUSD to provide respite and resources for local unsheltered families or persons, living in cars or RVs. The goal is to transition them to more stable housing. Nancy Lee is the representative from Advent.

Much progress has been made and the pilot program is beginning July 8th. Potential clients of the program are being identified and vetted through the Morgan Hill Police Department, MHUSD and local faith communities. Morgan Hill Bible Church has been identified as the site for up to eight vehicles. The parking lot would be open from 7 PM to 8 AM and clients and their vehicles would need to leave the site by 8 AM.

Various site services will be provided and on site security will be there from 10 PM to 8 AM, funded by a Police Department grant. A light breakfast and a to-go-lunch will be provided daily along with other support services. Further details of this project can be obtained by contacting either Nancy Lee or Marcia Nelson.

What is needed now are 7 teams of faith groups and community members who will host the car park for 2 one week periods. Each team would be responsible for providing 3-5 volunteers from 6 PM to 10 PM. A volunteer orientation will be provided at MH Bible Church in mid-June. Morgan Hill Bible Church and St. Catherine Church have already signed up for their 2 one week hosting times. What can we at Advent do to move this project along? Let’s get busy and do our part!

COUNCIL’S CORNER June - July 2017

Your Advent Lutheran Church Council is working toward aligning Advent’s direction and activities with our Strategic Focus of Growing The Beloved Community in South County through service and the creative arts. This Advent Adventures, written in mid-May, is the June-July issue. Contact your Council and SCORE leaders for any updates after this goes to press.

Kevin Ford of TAG Consulting led the Visioning Team in a weekend retreat May 6 and 7. We reviewed what happened last year and what the SCORE teams have accomplished since then. Recall that SCORE is an acronym for:

Sustaining Strengths: Refocusing current ministries (Grant L.)Capabilities: Learning and innovating about our strategic focus (Bill M.)Outreach: External catalytic ministries (Valerie S.)Resources: Enabling our infrastructure to support our strategic focus (Janel J.)Engagement: Creating a culture that engages each person’s passion and strengths (Mark G.)

We discussed the concept of a “signature ministry” for Advent. This ministry will be owned by Advent and will not rely on outside groups for support. It will be ongoing and sustainable. It will tap into the majority of Advent’s members and friends. It will build on our strengths, passions, and core values. Everyone is invited to a Fireside Chat on June 4th at 11:00 AM to share an exciting vision of a new outreach in our community. Come to learn and contribute to the work of the Spirit!

Kyle Jones, a candidate for the Director of Music and Worship Arts position, visited May 11-14. He met with staff, choir, youth, Gather musicians, and the Search Team. On Sunday, he participated in worship, gave a mini-concert on organ and piano, and interacted with members and friends during fellowship. Advent’s Council and Executive committees, acting on the recommendation from the Search Team, have offered the position to Kyle.

Want to join a once-in-a-lifetime event? A Reformation 500 task force has been assembled to organize our Faith of Our Neighbors event and other activities related to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Contact Ed M. if you want to participate. As you recall, Advent will present Faith of Our Neighbors: Christianity in the Lutheran Tradition in October. This is part of the education programs of the Interfaith Community of South County (ICSC).

The Sierra Pacific Synod Assembly was held in Fresno on May 4-6. Advent’s voting members were Lynn Astalos, Dave and Valerie Chambliss, Catherine Holmes, and Pastor Anita. You can find a recap of the Assembly at http://spselca.org/index.php/2017-synod-assembly-tabs-2/. The live stream is on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJvOyn06YyMW0Ya6_naNgLQ. Advent reported to Synod Assembly what we have done with the $5,000 outreach grant we received in 2016. Please contact our voting members or Pastor to learn more.

The Busk property development project to the north of Advent was granted a commence construction deadline extension by the Morgan Hill City Council at its May 17 meeting. The commence construction deadline was extended from June 30, 2017 to December 30, 2017. Advent’s Murphy Frontage Improvement project is linked to the timing of the Busk development. Advent hopes to realize some cost savings by using the same contractor as the Busk property development. It appears that the Murphy Frontage Improvement project will start within the next several months. Council and Executive Committees are investigating the project cost and the options for financing. Thanks to Dave Paulsen, Advent’s project manager, for monitoring this and keeping Council up-to-date.

Do you remember the faith development experiences of your childhood and youth? Was there some adult who helped guide your faith journey? Here’s your opportunity to do some faith development with Advent’s children and youth. Engage in “Growing Young” by connecting with the age group leaders. 10 Advent Adventures

Each week a different Ministry or group at Advent Lutheran is recognized both in the bulletin and during service. The members are asked to bring the Communion elements to the altar along with the offerings for the day and receive a thanksgiving prayer and blessing by Pastor Warner. This recognition came about after careful review of the Cottage Meeting survey results, particularly question # 18; “I tell stories of how this congregation makes a difference in the lives of others.” These ministries and groups do make a difference and we wanted to share them with you. Here are their stories.

April 30, 2017Pastoral Partners

Pastoral Partners are members of Advent who offer caring support and encouragement, to those in our church family who may have suffered the loss of a family member, a job or had a life experience that has been difficult. The Pastoral Partners Program is under the Community Connections umbrella. Pastoral Partners was started around 2005 under the leadership of Ellie Quayle.

Currently each of the 20 Pastoral Partners supports 2 to 6 family units, with the goal of the ministry to have a Pastoral Partner for each member of Advent. These caring people offer support to those who may be struggling with problems that were going unnoticed. They also support new members by walking with them through their spiritual journey, encouraging them however they can.

Pastoral Partners meets at 2:00 PM on the last Monday of every other month. At each of our meetings we attempt to offer a program that will provide a new awareness to our members to a particular issue. If you are interested in being part of this ministry, please speak with Cathy

Boettcher or Ellie Quayle at church or contact them through the church office.

May 7, 2017Vision Team

Today we recognize the Vision Team, which has been working with Kevin Graham Ford of TAG Consultants since January 2016 on Advent’s Transforming Church process. The Vision Team includes the Church Council and at-large members, especially those with children and youth, contributing to this process. The Vision Team has met in Saturday/Sunday retreats with Kevin Ford in January, February and May of 2016 and is meeting with him this weekend for a follow-up retreat. The team has assessed our current realities; developed a statement of our core values, with wider congregational input; determined our strategic focus; developed and carried out, with others in the congregation, actions to support this focus; and is meeting this weekend to better align our infrastructure, culture and brand with our core ideology.

May 14, 2017Mother’s DayThe first North American Mother’s Day was conceptualized with Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation in 1870. The United States congress approved Mother’s Day in 1914 and we celebrate it on the second Sunday in May, as do the majority of countries that celebrate Mother’s Day. Today we celebrate mothers everywhere, and especially, the mothers at Advent Lutheran.

As has been the custom for the past few years, the Stewardship Team offered red roses and baby’s breath to all of the women and young ladies at each worship service.

May 21, 2017Communion Bread BakersHave you ever wondered where we get the bread for communion during our worship services? Years ago, Barbara Fumagalli, a charter member

Page 11: Advent's NewsletterTemplateadvent-lutheran.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/June-Ju…  · Web view“If you continue in my word,” Jesus said, “you are truly my disciples,

11 Advent Adventuresof Advent, developed a recipe for the bread we use today. She baked the bread from her home for more than twenty years.

Now we have four members of this ministry who share the responsibility of baking the bread for communion. They are, Ruth Johnson, Rosemary Perry, Doris Staehr and Patty McGill-Zappe.

In addition to the Sunday communion bread, Sheila Walton purchases Challah bread from Mitra’s Bakery in the Vineyard Town Center in Morgan Hill for the Easter Vigil Service.

This ministry is under the Altar Guild ministry umbrella and its members meet in the Fall to set up the schedule for the liturgical calendar and decide who will bake the bread during which months, with each member responsible for three months.

On the inside of the tri-fold brochure used at the Cottage Meetings in 2009 were all of the ministries at Advent. When members were asked to open the brochures, most were astounded at the scope of what is offered at Advent. We literally have and will continue to celebrate a different ministry each week. We hope you have enjoyed learning a little more about what Advent Is and Does and the next time someone asks you, “What does your church do to make a difference in the lives of others?” you can say “Let me tell about my church, Advent Lutheran, and the wonderful things were are doing here.” You’ll have a great story to tell.

FOOD OF THE MONTH

JUNE - CANNED DAIRY (Non-perishable)JULY - JUICE

However, you can donate other nonperishable foods  as well. When you shop, pick up two of something, and put one in a bag for church. Then leave it by the door or stick it in your car so when you are running late for church, you haven't forgotten your food bag.

Many people in south county need our help.  This is a simple way we can make a difference. If you are interested in helping others find food: - Make sure they have a picture I.D. - Call the Food Information Hotline at 1-800-984-3663. - Give the zip-code of where the person lives and nearby zip-codes.
