It is not enoughto have scores of re-search projects, buttheir utility to the gen-eral public and the na-tion as a whole shouldbe ensured. Researchpapers and publicationsare as important aspatents in the realm ofscientific research. The

tainly pave the way forthe creation of a fullyliterate nation. But towhat extent can com-plete literacy aid ourcountry in its thirst forgrowth?

In order to ensurethe complete develop-ment of a country weshould make advancesin science and technol-ogy that can revolution-ize commerce and in-dustry, taking the eco-nomy to here-to-foreunattained levels. Theresults of such ad-vances should percolateto the grass-root level ofsociety. The role ofhigher education & re-

But the generalfeeling is that the pre-cious research findingswill remain idle as amajority of the academicpopulation is not inter-ested in communicat-ing the same to peergroups or the public atlarge. Research findingsare of no use, whenkept safe in thealmirah, especially at atime when the funds forresearch are pouring infrom the public exche-quer. It is the primaryduty of each Universityto ensure that the fruits

distinction between in-dividual and institutionis to be avoided in theseundertakings in orderto achieve the commongood. We should alsohonour the research-ers for their efforts asthey rightfully deserve.

It is generally feltthat the pedagogues andresearchers rarely com-municate the fruits ofresearch, which is high-ly necessary for thereputation of the insti-tution and the profes-sional enrichment ofthe scientist. The im-pact and impact factorof such papers shouldalso be taken into ac-

count since various re-puted Govt. agencieslike UGC and NAAC giveparamount importanceto papers published inrefereed journals withhigh impact value. Inorder to achieve andretain a reputation on aglobal level, excellencein teaching and produc-ing good results are sim-ply not sufficient.

Here I would like toemphasize that ethicalbehavior in all academicactivities is essential.Plagiarism in researchshould be avoided at allcosts, not through theuse of software but bythe application of con-science. Let our ethicsand cultural heritagebe our anti-plagiarismsoftware. The publish-ing of all research find-ings on a regular basiswill ensure our Univer-sity a good academicreputation and any in-stitution that hesitatesto do so stands to per-ish. It will bring acco-lades not only to theindividual & the insti-tution, but also to thewhole scientific com-munity.

Though she is the first wo-man Vice Chancellor of CochinUniversity of Science andTechnology , Dr. J. Letha with herclear academic vision andboldness has proved that she willcomplete the tenure unlike manyof her predecessors. Many of thereputed academicians who heldthat post did not or could not com-plete the term.

I have had the chance tointerview almost all VCs rightfrom Dr. MV Pailee (of courseexcept K Gopalan). Among those

With a clear mission and visiononly Dr. Babu Joseph and Dr.Ramachandran Thekkedath didcomplete the term. Well knownacademicians like Dr. Harsh KGuptha, Dr. Maheswari, Dr. KGAdiyodi , Dr. Unnikrishnan Nair,Dr. Abdul Azeez and Dr. GanganPrathap did not complete the term.KG Adiyodi left Cusat aftergetting nomination as member ofUPSC. So also Dr. Azeez left Cusatto join as VC of AMU.

Usually I ask a particularquestion to all of them. Have youexpectation of completing theterm? Among the above mentio-ned VCs I did feel Dr. KG Adiyodiwas the most powerful man. Nextcomes Dr. Abdul Azeez. And now

the present VC also resembles thecompetence of the above twopersons.

Here are some excerpts fromthe interview.

Q : You have heen in this seatfor the last three months. What isyour experience in Cusat?

A : I am studying each andeverything. Now having dept.visits to study the atmosphere andculture.

Q : Years back NAAC peercommittee had observed that the

depts. are fragmented. That wasa minus point then for gettinghigh score.

A : I too feel so. Fragmenteddepts. I am trying to bring themunited and have a cordial rela-tionship. The NAAC peer commi-ttee will have their visits to Cusatshortly. We have to do a lot beforethat.

Q : What is your academicvision and plans ?

A : Two major plans are goingto be introduced. We will intro-duce it in the Syndicate and afterthe ratification of the Syndicatewe plan to introduce them fromnext academic year.

Q: What are they?

A : One is digital valuationand the other is academiccalendar. In digital valuation ofexam papers all the answersheets will be scanned and theconcerned teacher will at hisconvenience to value the paperwith computer. With marking fora question the entire process isdone automatically like tabulation, putting the tabulated marks inmarksheets etc. We will have toscan around one and half lakhanswer papers in an exam for

this. The next thing is academiccalendar. This is not examcalendar. We will divide all theclass hours into six and the lasttwo hours will be for electives.Any student studying for anysubject should be allowed to taketwo electives at his discretion. Forthis a calendar is a must. ForB.Tech classes, sem 1 and sem 2results should be released beforethey register for sem 3 exam.

The Sophisticated Test andInstrumentation Centre (STIC)at Cusat is organizing a 4-dayWorkshop on Electron Micros-copy from 4th March, 2015.

Cusat: STIC installs High ResolutionTransmission Electron Microscope

The Sophisticated Testand Instrumentation Centre(STIC) in the Cusat has in-stalled a High ResolutionTransmission Electron Mic-roscope imported fromJapan. The installed modelJEM 2100 is having 0.24nmresolution with an accele-ration voltage of 200kV. Thisequipment was with Sophi-sticated Analytical Instru-ment Facility (SAIF), at acost of Rs. 3.5 Crore receivedfrom DST, Govt. of India. DSThas been supporting the SAIFby providing funds for pro-curing instruments like Sca-nning Electron Microscope(SEM), Single Crystal XRD,FT NMR etc. So far 15 analy-tical instruments have beeninstalled in SAIF which areextensively used by theresearch community.

The Transmission Elect-ron Microscope (TEM) ope-rates based on the sameprinciple of light (optical)microscope but uses elect-rons instead of light to image

a sample. Due to smallerwave length of the electrons, the magnification possible inTEM is more than 10,00,000times, which enables theuser to examine the samplestructure in fine detail. App-lications of TEM includeCancer Research, Virology,Material Science, Pollution,Nanoparticles, Nanotubes,Semi - conductor Researchetc. At present, with the in-stalled facility in STIC, Pow-der, Polymer and Biologicalsamples are accepted foranalysis.

A joint venture ofKSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala andCusat, STIC has a world-class calibration facility forElectro-technical, Thermaland Mechanical parameters. These laboratories are accre-dited by National Accredi-tation Board for Testing andCalibration (NABL) based onthe standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005.
