He received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Brno University of Technology, Czech Repub- lic, in 1979 and 1987, respectively. He is currently full professor in Electrical Machines, Apparatus and Drives and vice dean of Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at VSB-Technical University of Ostrava. His current research interests are applied electronics, microcomputer control systems and modern control methods of electrical drives. Since 2000 he has performed research in field of modern control methods for AC motors, for example sensorless control using non-linear observers, applications of artificial intelligence in control of AC drives. The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, with more than 3500 students, is one of the largest faculties at the VSB-Technical University Ostrava. The Faculty assures the high-quality education in study branches which are focused on the most advanced technologies in the electrical engineering, electronics, communications and computer science. The main goal of the education is to prepare the college students for their career in the practice, research or in the education. During study, the students gain important knowledge in general and special subjects of the electrical engineering and computer science. After educational programs, science and research activities are the most important activities at the Faculty. The Faculty is equipped with modern laboratories which enable high-quality research and development. This year, the Faculty has celebrated the twentieth anniversary of its establishment. Electrical engineering, telecommunications and computer science is the heart of modern technologies and innovations from computers to electronic systems, cars, energy power systems, mechatronics, health care, biomedical devices and safety technologies. The EE and ICT branches belong to the top requested branches by potential employers because of their versatility. The EE and ICT degrees will provide the fundamentals for any job in engineering or technology management, and is the path to many interesting careers during lifetime. This year is also the year when the scientific journal with the title “Advances in Electrical and Electronic Engineering” (AEEE), whose origin is connected with the activities of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zilina, fully restores its activity. The young team of staff at the Department of Telecommunications of our Faculty responded very actively to offer of cooperation with colleagues from Zilina and within a very short time restored the activity associated with the issue of the AEEE journal. In a short time period, the team led by editor-in-chief Jan Latal did large amount of work. This year, very interesting scientific articles were already published in the various issues of the AEEE journal. I believe that the number of articles will still grow and that the opponents will still have more work. The AEEE journal is already included in the list of non-impacted reviewed journals published in the Czech Republic. The AEEE journal articles are counted in assessing the results of research and development and bring the authors the required scoring according to national methodology for evalu- ating the results of science and research. The next gradual goal of the whole editorial board headed by the editor-in-chief is to gain inclusion to the database SCOPUS as soon as possible and then to the database Journal Citation Reports which is available in the Czech Republic within the license to the database Web of Knowledge. Journal Citation Reports Web helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals. The quality International Scientific Editorial Board, which is composed of many renowned experts in the field of electrical engineering, telecommunications and information technologies, is a guarantee of successful development of the AEEE journal. I am convinced that work of the whole team will be successful and the main goal, which is the quality scientific journal indexed in Journal Citation Reports, will be filled. It is clear that achieving this ambitious goal will require several years of very demanding organizational and creative work. I wish the AEEE journal and the whole team many excellent articles written by significant authors in the field of electrical engineering, telecommunications, applied mathematics and information technol- ogy. Finally, I would like to thank for this opportunity to share my thoughts on future of the AEEE journal. Pavel Brandstetter
