Proteomics Symposium.

BIOTECHNOLOGY FIELD TRIPS

Providing hands-on activities for middle and high school students and their teachers, fi eld trip experiences include laboratory experiments based on molecular biology techniques and, for high school students, a tour of Promega’s production facilities. Most of these labs also can be taken “on the road” to schools. 2014/2015 topics include:

• Bioluminescence• DNA & Principles of Gel Electrophoresis• Do Vampires Walk Among Us? Restriction Fragment

Length Polymorphism (RFLP) Analysis of Porphyria• Restriction Enzyme Digestion & Gel Electrophoresis

of DNA• Immunology• Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

for Genetic Screening• PCR to Detect Genetically Modifi ed Organisms• Short Tandem Repeats & Genetic Identity• Stem Cell Presentation

DANE COUNTY YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM IN BIOTECHNOLOGY

In partnership with the Dane County School Consortium, high school juniors and seniors receive advanced training at the BTC Institute and are placed with a mentor in a science lab. They work 450 hours/year to earn either a one- or two-year certifi cate through the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

A CELEBRATION OF LIFE: SUMMER SCIENCE PROGRAMS

In partnership with the African American Ethnic Academy, we offer two sessions, one for upper elementary and one for middle school students. Each session runs Monday – Friday mornings for two weeks. Exploration of annual themes through hands-on activities emphasized!Elementary School: June 15–26, 2015Middle School: June 29–July 10, 2015

WORKSHOPS & COURSES FOR TEACHERS

The BTC Institute regularly provides training for teachers at professional conferences, including the National Association of Biology Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association and the Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers.

One intensive summer course is offered, as are several 1- to 2-day workshops. Graduate education credits are available.

COMMENTS FROM PARTICIPANTS

“The course was well organized and much appreciated …This has to be one of the BEST hands-on courses that I have taken in my 24 years of teaching—I have materials to take back and implement immediately.”

“This was, by far, the best training/class I have taken since exiting college. I am so excited to fi nally do this in class. The two instructors … are absolutely top shelf teachers. Please do everything to keep them.”

“I can’t tell you how wonderful this class was! It was very helpful & eye opening. I had biotech all around me & didn’t even know it!! Great class, great teachers, great information—best graduate class.”Promega Corporation, an international biotechnology fi rm, serves as the BTC Institute’s primary sponsor: www.promega.com
