16.2 Steps to a good pedicure.
1. The tools you need
1. FOUR SIDED POLISHER: this is a prism with numbers on each of its sides. 1 to 3 are files of
different thicknesses from roughest to finest and side number four is a sponge to bring out the
natural shine of the nail.
2. PLIERS: Used to cut toenails. As toenails are harder than fingernails, this device will help you cut
effortlessly.
3
3. MANICURE SCISSORS: For finishing, these are small and pointed. Used to cut the nails or cuticles.
4. NAIL FILE: the file is made of glass or crystal. It is the type that is least damaging to the nail. It
comes in different sizes. There are also files of grit and metal.
LATHE
1. Base which contains the battery. On top, you place the different heads.
2. Coarse nail file. For nail edge and sides.
3. Medium grit nail file. For nail edge and sides.
4. Fine grit nail file. For nail edge and sides.
5. Sponge nail polisher. To bring out the natural shine of the nail.
6. Medium grit nail polisher. For the entire nail surface.
7. Fine grit nail polisher. For the entire nail surface.
8. Fan. Used for drying nail polish.
4
TOE SEPARATOR: These are curved sponges to fit between the toes. It helps to keep nail polish from
smudging on other toes by separating them a little.
1. BRUSH: This is a plastic bristle brush. It’s used to clean dust from nail files.
5
2. SANDING: This is a fine metal sandpaper. It’s used to soften calluses.
3. FILE: A coarse file. It’s used to soften calluses.
4. PUMICE: This is a porous stone. It’s used to soften calluses.
Materials you need:
Water and soap
Large basin
Medium sized towel
Pedicure pliers
Coarse nail file
Orange stick
Cuticle cream
Small pliers
Manicure scissors
Moisturising cream
Sandpaper
Foot file
Pumice
4 sided polisher
Lathe
Toe separators
Nail polishes

step by step instructions
1. Place the feet in a bowl of warm water with PH neutral soap. Soak for 7-10 minutes. Dry the feet
with a towel.
2. Cut the nails straight with the pedicure pliers. Toenails are thicker than fingernails and pliers help you cut straight and smoothly because if you cut them rounded, the nails tend to cut into the skin on the sides and this is uncomfortable and painful.
3. File the nails with a coarse file, using a sideways movement.
7
4. With an orange stick, remove excess filing powder, products or dirt that gathers under the nail.
(From underneath the white part of the nail).
5. Apply a cuticle remover product that will make it easier to remove. Leave for two minutes.
With an orange stick, gently push the cuticle back, one nail at a time.
If necessary, trim the excess skin of the cuticle, removing it with small pliers or nail scissors. Remove excess
products with towel cuticle.
8
6. Apply moisturiser on the cuticle and leave on for about two minutes while massaging the cuticle
area.
7. There are areas of the feet that are dry and rough. They usually appear on the heel and the ball
of the foot. There are also thick areas of skin on the lateral side of the foot.
These areas need to be smoothed. For this you use the metal sandpaper and go over the parts that have
roughness or thickness. You do this by performing lateral movements.
You also go over the above areas with the file.
Take the pumice and wet it. Again, go over the rough or thick areas of skin energetically.
9
8. Polish the nails with the four sided polisher. On each face of the prism there is a number. Start
with the side marked with number one and finish up with the side that says 4. Each side has a
different grit size, 1 to 3, and a smooth surface for polishing and shining - number 4.
With the first three sides, file the surface of the nail and file only in one direction, not doing circles, from side
to side or up and down. These three sides of the polisher help to leave the nails smooth and uniform without
striations on the nails. With side four of the polisher, do a strong and rapid friction to bring out the natural
shine of the nail. You can also smooth the top layers of the nail with a low power lathe. You start with the
thicker file head and finish with the finest. You need to be careful and not let the lathe head rest on the nail.
Do a smooth and uniform motion from side to side on the nail.
10
9. Next, a foot massage. In the next section of this module you'll study step by step instructions on how to complete a foot massage. There is also a video tutorial.
10. Remove excess nail cream with a towel and put the toe separator in place.
This helps to paint the nails without smudging.
11. Apply nail polish.

16.5 Foot massage
FEATURES AND OBJECTIVES
Our feet take centre stage in summer but we must take care of them all throughout the year. They can be a
neglected area of the body. We often forget that they are carrying the weight of the whole body.
It is important to pamper them once in a while with a foot massage that will relieve and relax the feet. As
well as being relaxing, it reduces stress. The use of inappropriate footwear can cause a bad instep and not
provide adequate support for the arches and soles of the feet. This can also cause calluses and bone
malformations.
The shoe soles to avoid are ones that are too flat. Change your type of footwear often. It is equally harmful
to the health of your feet to continuously wear high heels or flat sneakers. If we care well for our feet we
will feel more rested and in better health.

Foot massage
Instructions
Soften: Sit in a chair with legs crossed – one foot placed over the knee of the other and the foot
relaxed. Apply cream, gently running your hands over the foot. Start softly and then rub with
more energy.
Invigorate the sole: Place the palm of one hand on the instep. With the thumb of the other hand
press along the center of the sole, sliding your thumb from the heel to the base of the toes.
Increasingly exert more pressure.
Invigorate the instep: Place both hands under the sole, supporting the toes. With your thumbs,
massage the instep from the ankle to the toes. Use a circular motion.
Bend the toes: With one hand, take all the toes and flex up and down. Repeat the operation
about 5 times. This helps the flexibility of the toes.
Massage the toes with the index finger, massage following the contour of the toes, from the big
toe to the pinkie and also the area between the toes.
Flex and extend the foot: With one hand, hold the ankle and with the other, extend the instep.
Hold for a few seconds and relax. Repeat 5 times.
Rotate the foot: Put one hand on the ankle and turn the foot slowly, tracing circles in a clockwise
direction. Repeat 5 times.
Invigorate the sole: Perform the same exercise again. Place one palm on the instep. With the
thumb of the other hand press along the center of the sole, sliding your thumb from the heel to
the base of the toes.
Soften: Finish the massage in the same way as you began. Rub your hands over the entire foot,
this time without adding more cream. Start energetically and finish with gentle pressure. Repeat
the massage on the other foot.
