CAFT 2016

The Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, invites applications from faculty members and researchers of Indian universities / research institutions for a 3-week training programme on “Fungal diversity and modern trends in taxonomy through DNA Barcoding and Chemo-profiling”sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi, scheduled from September 26 to October 16, 2016.

Objective

The major objective of the training programme is to train young faculty and scientists on the basic and strategic front of agriculture with particular reference to fungal taxonomy with latest knowledge of DNA barcoding and Chemo-profiling. The exposure to recent advances on fungal systematics will assist researchers to update their skills on fungal taxonomy. The proposed training program would therefore, be an essential event for researchers of plant pathology on a national scale to have active interactions and experiences to hone their skills in the area of fungal taxonomy. Hands-on training on the topic will be imparted in addition to lectures by eminent experts so that the participants could apply the same in their research programmes.

Eligibility

M.Sc/Ph.D in Plant Pathology and working not below the rank of Assistant Professor and equivalent in Plant Pathology or relevant subject of Agricultural University /ICAR Institute.

How to apply

After filling the online applications, take a printout of the application and get it approved by the competent authority of the organization and upload the scanned copy of application through CBP portal on or before 10.08.2016. Selection of participants will be from online applications and the selected participants list will be uploaded/displayed on the portal.

However, he/she may send an advance copy (via email) directly to the Course Director. The selected candidates will also be informed individually. The participants are requested to keep in contact with the Course Director regarding their selection status.

The participants will be provided, to and fro fare restricted to AC-II-Tier train ticket or any state road transport services as per the ICAR guidelines. Participants should produce a certificate that they have not been given T A/DA by their host institute (Head of the Department/Institute) and the training period should be considered 'On Duty' by the participant's parent institution. Boarding and lodging for the participants will be provided at the ICAR and the charges will be met by the training programme.

About the training programme

Fungi are one of the most important groups of organisms on the planet. They are used in food (Mushrooms and Morels); baking industry; production of enzymes, antibiotics, hormones and different organic acids; organic matter decomposition; symbiotic relation with plants and are potential biotic threats to crop production. Authentic identification of these fungi is must as wrong identification would result in wrong interpretations in research programmes. Moreover, most of fungal groups are vast, diverse and complex making the identification task equally complicated and difficult. Diversity studies on various groups of fungi will facilitate the Indian scientists to update the latest developments in fungal taxonomy through detailed descriptions of genera/species; formulation of diagnostic keys; establishment of phylogenetic relationships; taxon-based research on population structure of natural consortia and development of databases, and further need based molecular characterization/DNA barcoding and Chemo-profiling to explore chemotaxonomy and bioactive compounds. Recently, our group has been instrumental in successfully demonstrating the recent advances in fungal taxonomy. In the proposed training, these success stories will be demonstrated with the main objective to provide a hands-on training on polyphasic taxonomy.
