Advanced Crochet Stitches

Crochet is a relaxing activity even if you are creating an afghan completely with single

crochet stitches. Sooner or later, however, you are probably going to want to delve into more challenging

patterns. Here are some crochet stitches that will help you create variety in your projects.

Frontpost/Backpost Double Crochet

Frontpost and backpost double crochet are used in tandem for vertical ribbing. The abbreviations are fpdc

and bpdc. These are simple stitches that add texture to your project.

Frontpost Double Crochet

1. Yarn over.

2. Insert the hook behind the post of the stitch from front to

back to front.

3. Yarn over, pull through. There are now three loops on

hook.

4. Yarn over and draw through two loops. Two loops remain.

5. Yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook. Stitch

is complete.

Backpost Double Crochet

1. Yarn over.

2. Insert hook from back to front to back.

3. Yarn over, pull through. There are now three loops on

hook.

4. Yarn over and draw through two loops. Two loops remain.

5. Yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook. Stitch

is complete.

Vertical Ribbing

Work this pattern with an odd number of chain stitches, plus three. It is great to use for cuffs on socks,

sweaters, and mittens, as well as on the top to purses.

1. Double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in

each chain across.

2. Chain two and turn. Double crochet in the first double

crochet. Frontpost double crochet around next double

crochet, backpost double crochet around next double

crochet, frontpost double crochet around next double

crochet. Repeat to the last double crochet. Double crochet

in last double crochet.

3. Chain two and turn. Double crochet in first double crochet.

Backpost double crochet around next double crochet,

frontpost double crochet around the next double crochet,

backpost around the next double crochet. Repeat across to

last double crochet. Double crochet in last double crochet.

Popcorn Stitch

The popcorn stitch is one of the most popular crochet stitches for baby things. It creates a row that is made

up of a series of puffs. By using contrasting yarn for the puffs, this beautiful stitch is further enhanced.

1. Work five double crochet in the stitch.

2. Drop a loop from the hook.

3. Insert the hook in the top of the first double crochet of the

group.

4. Pull dropped loop through stitch.

5. Chain one.

6. Stitch completed.

Solomon’s Knot

Solomon’s Knot is a fantastic stitch that creates an open pattern. It is perfect to make a bag to carry

groceries in. The pattern looks a lot like a fishing net when it is done. The pattern is much easier than it

Picot

A picot stitch is a dainty, decorative edging. It is perfect for baby blankets, dresses, and even the top of

socks. It is one of the most effortless crochet stitches of all.

1. Chain three.

2. Slip stitch in third chain from hook.
