critical care. Special patient populationsdiscussed include the immediate post-operative period, critically ill pregnantpatients, pediatric patients in the adultcritical care unit, critically ill patientswith neuropsychiatric disorders orchemical dependency, oncologicemergencies, and end-of-life care.There are 2 additional chapters in thisunit that are particularly timely: caringfor critically ill elderly patients andcaring for bariatric patients.

Readers will appreciate severalunique features of this book. Nutritionboxes related to specific physiologicprocesses provide the reader with keyinformation to consider when planningand implementing care. Numerouscase studies are woven throughoutthe chapters and present key patientassessment findings and diagnosticdata. Authors then use decision pointquestions to guide the reader towarddetermining what other informationshould be considered or what actionshould be taken.

Pharmacologic implications arepresented using medication tables thatare positioned within the content toprovide a concise overview of theactions, indications, dosages and special considerations related to theadministration of the drug(s). Othertables include multidisciplinary plansof care that use a problem-basedapproach related to the body systemor disease process involved. Thesetables enforce the importance of col-laboration with other members of thehealth care team and aid the readerin determining appropriate choicesfor care. In addition to many full colorillustrations, the Evolve Web site forthe book provides updates, selected

appropriate multidisciplinary, evi-dence-based plan of care for a specificpatient population. The authors focusthe assessment portion of the nursingprocess on recognition of abnormalresults from diagnostic tests andpotentially life-threatening complica-tions, resulting in the application ofcontent in a practical manner.

The first unit of the book deals withthe current critical care environment,discussing caring for patients in non-traditional settings or for patients withcomorbid conditions that require spe-cialized knowledge. The AACN SynergyModel and the Healthy Work Environ-ment Standards are presented alongwith critical elements related to eachstandard. An overview of the conceptsof pain and sedation is also presented,in which different types of pain arediscussed and therapies include notonly medications, but also nonphar-macologic interventions.

The second unit also gives the readerimportant information related to con-cepts applicable to a variety of criticalcare patients. Chapters in this unit arededicated to symptom management,application of nutrition, thermoregula-tion, and caring for families of criticallyill patients. Chapter 9 provides keyinformation on topics such as rapidresponse teams, central catheter blood-stream infections, ventilator-associatedpneumonia, and stress-related erosivesyndrome, using an evidence-basedapproach to improving outcomesthrough prophylaxis.

Units 3 to 11 thoroughly discusseach separate body system ending withmultisystem disorders. The final unitaddresses unique patient populationsthat may not often be associated with
