About the workshopThis short course will introduce participants to the three essential elements of a successful project: firstly identifying the climate-change related and other benefits of technological innovations; secondly evaluating the economic and financial feasibility of a proposed project; and finally identifying stakeholders and options for project financing. Entrepreneurs in climate-friendly technologies must understand new agents in the financial markets, such as investment funds and private equity companies and how they differ from traditional sources of finance.

Participants will gain a basic understanding of how to analyze the benefits and economic feasibility of proposed new systems or technologies to address climate change. They will also learn how to approach financial markets, develop a business plan and identify companies and government agencies able to fund innovative climate-friendly projects.

What we offer: Participants will gain skills in how to successfully design climate-friendly innovations, and identify suitable options for financing:

• Understand the need for climate friendly innovations

• Learn methods to assess environmental and climate benefits

• Analyse legal, economic and environmental constraints

• Analyse the financial market players, and understand the role of private equity, investment funds, and collective investment schemes for climate change related entrepreneurs

Who can take part? Individuals and groups working on innovations to address climate change, including:

• Entrepreneurs

• Start-up companies

• Project developer

Course organisation The course objectives will be taught in two stages, by applying different learning approaches. The first stage will take place prior to the course through e-learning, while the second one will take place during the training days in Valencia. In addition, a follow up session will carried out after the course.

First stage: Prior to the course (from October 7th to October 14th):

1. Participants will start their training with a “Preparation Assignment”. Participants will be provided with e-material (videos and papers) covering the following learning objectives: Introduction to climate change; Needs for technology innovation; Methods to assess environmental and climate benefits. Participants will learn with the material provided but also they will have to complete an assignment. Prof. Ed Rubin will be leading the preparation assignement.

2. Participants will be invited to participate in a webinar on October 13th.The webinar will tackle the learning objective “Evaluating the costs and economic feasibility of innovative climate change technologies”. Prof. Elena de la Poza will lead the webinar. These systems of learning will help balance the initial knowledge about business models among participants as the right tool to convey domain knowledge to participants in the course. Also, this first learning stage prior to the course will make knowledge dissemination slims during the course.

Page 4: Advanced business models for climate- friendly ... · program to help entrepreneurs with eco-innovative business models) and has written a report about eco-innovation practices developed

Second stage: During the course October 19th -20th .Throughout the course, action-based learning will be applied. The experts and coaches will provide real cases for the participants, innovate, and provide potential solutions to climate change. Action-based learning relies on real-life cases. It will be employed by experts and coaches to accelerate the acquisition of practical skills by participants. The implementation and combination of these two approaches; will foster participants’ ability to introduce their own innovative ideas; to promote the implementation of business models for new technologies against climate change.

Third stage: Follow up after the course December 1st The participants will be invited to participate in a webinar after the course, to complete their training. Once the knowledge is embedded, participants will be encouraged to take action to make progress on their business plans. The purpose of this webinar will be to coach participants, to help them in their business development.
