TIME TO ACT ON BIOFUELS– We wish you welcome to our Advanced Biofuels Conference!

What is advanced biofuels? Actually, biofuels can be produced in so many ways from biomass and bioliquids from forestry, agriculture or aquaculture, and with so many technologies that raw material, waste and production met-hods cannot easily be classified in generations, as more advanced and less advanced. This simplified classification doesn’t accurately describe reality.

At this conference we suggest that advanced biofuels are all fuels that reduce carbon emissions with more than 80 percent compared to fossil fuels. We are convinced that biofuels from different origin can be developed to that level, and play an important role in greenhouse gas reduction. The transport sectors in aviation, maritime and on land can switch a lot quicker to renewable, sustainable biofuels than most people realise.

This conference is about all the opportunities, the potential and possibilities, but also about the current market deve-lopment and policy, and how to influence political decision makers to make it happen. In December 2015, COP21 will take place in Paris. We all hope that the global leaders will be able to reach an agreement on how to combat climate change and keep the global temperature from rising more than 2°C.

We are part of the solution. Clean and efficient conversion of biomass in biorefineries demonstrates opportunities for large-scale production of biofuels with commercial break-throughs in many sectors. Now is the time to pave the way for ambitious goals and make it possible for biofuels to compete with fossil fuels.

It is understandable that countries producing oil and other fossils hesitate to introduce car-bon taxation and move towards a sustainable society. But countries like Sweden with no domestic fossil resources benefit from better economy and industrial development using native resources for fuel production.

Finally, don’t hesitate to take the opportunity to contribute with your own knowledge and experience in discussions and seminars, and network with delegates during breaks. You will find tremendous engagement and ambitions for renewables in all transportation sec-tors among the participants at the conference.

Most welcome to Stockholm and the Advanced Biofuels Conference!

SESSION 1: pOLITICAL sTRATEGIEs ANd vIsIONs

The COP21/CMP11 in Paris in December will be crucial, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applica-ble to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2°C. The COP21 has a good chance for success and it is time for policy makers to pave the way and let the industry get viable mar-ket conditions to boost the production.

Transport accounts for about 60 percent of EU oil consumption, half of which goes into cars and vans. Sweden has decided upon a vision for 2030 with a fossil-independent vehicle fleet but there is no long-term policy for biofuels yet. EU has a mandate of 10% biofuels by 2020 but limits agro-based biofuels to 7% and no clear goals with incentives for 2030. USA has adopted Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) with 17.4 billion gallons renewables for 2016 but the future is unclear.

At the same time there is a lively debate in the sustainability of biofuels. How is sustainability of biofuels verified?

This session will discuss the political willingness, challenges ahead, biomass potential for biofuels in an expanding world energy market and the session ends with a panel debate on these topics.

When: Wednesday 16 September at 09.00-12.15Where: Vintergatan

SESSION 2: pARTNERsHIps ANd CHALLENGEs

The aviation industry has committed itself to half the emissions in absolute numbers to 2050. This calls for a global agreement on fuels standards and collaborations to overcome technological and logistical hurdles for development of biorefineries. Partnerships are thus important to create success stories.

This session will bring about examples for biofuels flightpath, the renewable biofuel refinery 2020 and advanced biofuels deploy-ment – investing in Europe’s future.

Learn how these are created and where you can be part of the solution in the panel debate that concludes this session.

When: Wednesday 16 September at 13.30-15.00Where: Vintergatan

SESSION 3: MARkET ANd INdusTRy pERspECTIvEs

The European oil consumption for transport is some 400 million tons per year. A full transition to a sustainable transport sector with biofuels is an enormous task. At the same time it is a huge oppor-tunity and an emerging market for biofuels worth some €50 billion per year.

The biofuels and oil industry have answered the call by the politicians and the public for renewable fuels. There are today plentiful choices of biofuels ready to be deployed in large-scale biorefineries and demonstration of engines and vehicles for all types of biofuels. But which long-term instruments will be in place after 2020? And will there be more biofuel products to choose from or fewer?

Biofuels are however evolving with new innovations and what are the necessary requirements for developing a biofuel market?

This session looks at the drivers for building a biofuel market, presenting both theoretical models as well as knowledge from lessons learnt and successful market builders.

When: Wednesday 16 September at 15.30-17.00Where: Vintergatan

SESSION BLUE: BIOfuELs IN AvIATION ANd MARITIME TRANspORT

Sustainable sea transports demand new solutions for the future. Stena Line has chosen to focus its attention on the alternative fuel methanol, and now the world’s first methanol powered ferry, the Stena Germanica, has been launched on the Kiel–Gothenburg route. Hear from Stena Line and Wärtsilä, for example, about what holds in the future in maritime biofuels.

SkyNRG has launched the Fly Green Fund to bridge the costs for biojet by promoting new projects and plants. The aviation industry has thus taken the lead, while many politicians debate air travel as a way of transportation. Hear about the solutions that will make green air travel fly.

When: Thursday 17 September at 09.00-12.30Where: Vintergatan

MORE ABOUT THE SESSIONS – WHAT TO EXPECT! Within Advanced Biofuels Conference 2015 you will be able to participate in several sessions focusing on different themes. Depending on your own interest and profile you can choose among them, the mini expo with exhibitors and the study visit

with AGA demonstrating of a green hydrogen filling station and fuel cell vehicles.

SESSION GREEN: fOssIL fREE LANd TRANspORT sECTOR

Never before has there been more biofuels in the road transport sector and more biofuel products to choose from. Being it ethanol from sugars and cellulosic material or biomethane from anaerobic digestion or by thermo-chemical gasification, or biodiesel from fats and oils – or from wood origin. Bio-methanol and bio-DME are well known chemicals and shows good performance as efficient, clean burning fuels and is available from wood at small scales.

Electricity and hydrogen are used in battery cars that compete in fuel economy with combustion engines. Green gasoline from wood is one of the newest alternatives as a drop-in fuel that may un-lock the problem of higher blends for the existing vehicle fleet.

The session will give the latest in thermo-chemical gasification pathways to biofuels, advanced ethanol production and the new forest-based biodiesel processes and production plants. Learn about high-efficiency biofuels and how the market will change to include more advanced biofuels in coming years.

GOURMET NETWORKING DINNER 16 SEPTEMBER– ART MEETs BIOENERGy fOR AN ENvIRONMENTAL CONTRIBuTION!

Welcome to the official Gourmet Networking Dinner at Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport on Wednesday 16 September. During dinner the renowned artist Anna Toresdotter will perform a unique art project.

Today’s major challenges in the environmental debate are not always reflected in contemporary art, but in Anna Toresdotters paintings these are highlighted with the sensitivity of the issues presented.

Accompanied to music of her own compositions, Anna Toresdotter will paint a bio-artwork in front of the conference dinner guests which will be auctioned and where the surplus will go to Fly Green Fund, which enables airlines to use sustainable aviation fuels. Registration necessary!
