A Word From Our President

It’s hard to recall a year with as many twists, turns and unexpected news as 2016. Amid the external turmoil,SEDC has remained a constant, steady hand focused on delivering tangible value. Our results stimulated business investment generating job and wage growth that supports our communities and region.

Saratoga is really a special place. “World-class” is not a stretch given the significant foreign direct investment already attracted. It is a label we hear repeatedly from reputable business, investment, site development and academic leaders. This moniker makes us the envy of upstate New York and was a driving goal of SEDC over its 38-year legacy. With it comes an expectation for continued success to sustain our quality of life. It also comeswith old and new challenges to rise to the global competitive level and generate dynamic investment that createsbetter jobs for those left behind and for future generations. Workforce skills and capacity for truly shovel-readysites present opportunities to be met, as does investing in innovators through accessible support networks andcollaborative spaces that will retain and attract talent.

SEDC set its ambitious course to Advance Saratoga through 2020 with input from our community based investors and expert analysis of the economic drivers of the future. We are pleased to report here on progressmade in 2016. We have seen advanced manufacturers like AgroChem expand here, helped generate key supplychain growth for our semiconductor industry through PeroxyChem’s investment in its plant, realized job retentionsupporting local small and mid-sized businesses and helped land corporate headquarters with operations ofArnoff & SKS locating to Saratoga county. Our investor members and the incentives granted by our long-time community partners at the Saratoga County IDA, supporting its job and development mission, remain key ingredients to success.

To stay proactive in driving innovation and opportunity, we are excited to preview 2017 initiatives. Our agenda will not just benefit from, but needs, engagement. Lookout for ways to support robust job growth by leveragingour collective world-class expertise as a network boosting talented entrepreneurs. This innovative culture will solidify our competitive appeal. Emerging companies offer the most dynamic job and wage generation potential.Advisory roles from investor members will boost SEDC’s capacity to deliver this and other Advance Saratoga initiatives. Investment PLUS engagement will position your business to support our regional growth expandingbusiness opportunities.

SEDC is re-dedicated and energized to drive value to our investor members, community partners and Saratoga’sregion at large. Thank you for your input and sustained involvement. Please accept my seasons greetings for ahappy and healthy 2017 for all!

Faithfully,

Dennis A. Brobston

Optimized Content & Tools for Site Selection, Development & Investment

SEDC conducted a targeted site selector interview series to improve its recognition of key considerations and evaluation criteria for targeted industry experts to recommend locations for major project investment. Its findings validated and improved understanding of helpful tools andmethods to present key information.

Findings led directly to the Site Evaluation Engine (SEE Saratoga) development and deployment via SEDC’s enhanced website. Thanks to community partnership by National Grid, we were able to launch SEE as a powerful, unique to the region web-based site and demographicevaluation tool. Via collaboration with key community partners and investorsNew York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) and Interactive Media Consulting, LLC, SEDC optimized the content and functionality of ourwebsite for target sector businesses and investors across search, mobileand traditional display platforms.

Advance Saratoga Strategic Goal:

Accelerate our strategic sector targeted job creation

Saratoga remains a strategic asset for distribution, supply chain support of the semiconductor industry and to retain growth from home grown small businesses or attract corporate headquarters. SEDC is dedicated to solidifying investment and job creation in these areas to seize economic opportunity for our communities and households.

Driving Opportunities For Local Growth: An Innovation Platform Centered around Entrepreneurs’ Needed Resources

SEDC has prioritized stimulating the entrepreneurial culture that can benefitfrom the world-class talent in our communities. As evidenced by our friendsat Upstate Venture Connect and their 2016 Upstate Venture CEO Report,it’s the most direct way to support dynamic job creation due to the growthof young companies. That supports attracting and retaining a world classtalent pool and eventually yields more corporate headquarters locally.

That’s why SEDC is launching an innovation platform supported by the Clarkson University Shipley Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. It will feature key advisory support across all facets of enterprise from qualified local professionals, capital resource networks, engage regional students, higher ed, schools and other incubators to further inspire startup enterprise and provide support for local entrepreneurs.

“We evaluated options to deploy our innovation capabilities in the Capitalregion and are pleased to say wefound a dynamic partner ready toact in SEDC. Saratoga is a world-class destination with the lifestyleand talent pool to attract and retainpeople. We are excited to support innovative thinkers collaborate with talent to evaluate and help drive their pursuits. Clarkson’s alumni and our team at the Shipley Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship know innovators’ thinking not only sparks new growth enterprises, but develops visionary talent to established companies needing to sustain future growth. Clarkson’s capacity to help deepen the entrepreneurial culture is a win-win proposition for the greater Capital Region to be more globally competitive.”

– Tony Collins, President, Clarkson University

‘‘‘‘

Saratoga has so much tooffer young professionals in terms of lifestyle and a culture of people willing tostep up and support causesgreater than themselves. But it still has challenges tohelping those of us strugglingwith real business hurdles to remain here. SEDC has spentthe time to understand that and is building the advisory platform with us to help. I’m excited to work with SEDC and its advisory network to help those of us looking to create new businesses, retain talent right here in our community, and continueto build upon the already successful startup scene that has developed here organically over the last few years.”

Advance Saratoga Strategic Goal:

Build and strengthen Saratoga County’s capacity

Energy Demand Analysis with National Grid initiated to better understanddemand forecasts, capacity needed for the region to better plan for future growth.

“Energy costs are a big segment of our operating budget,” said Dan Frankowski, Plant Manager of Quad/Graphic’s Saratoga Springs manufacturing plant. “It is important to understand significant growth could affect our availability and pricing in the future. We support SEDC as they engage the local communities to find out possible impacts due to changes in the region’s load.”

SEDC’s Energy Survey has been covered by the Albany BusinessReview, Times Union, and The Saratogian.

Energy & Economic Development Roundtable SeriesTo better understand current and future energy needs, NationalGrid and SEDC met with local manufacturers and other large companies in the county. This allowed National Grid a first-handlook at challenges and any barriers for growth. In addition, it introduced and reinforced the local National Grid team.

Manufacturing & Export Roundtable SeriesAs part of SEDC’s Advance Saratoga Initiative to help drive business growth and jobs, SEDC is intensifying our business retention strategy by connecting manufacturers with valuable resources to generate the highest possible return on investment. SEDC further identified building the capacity for local business to export products and services as a priority.

SEDC developed a unique opportunity for local businesses to access financial and professional resources from key partners, Global NYand FuzeHub.
