EUROECHO 2012

EUROECHO & other Imaging Modalities, the annual meeting of the European Association of Echocardiography, has become one of the largest Echocardiography meeting in the world in terms of attendance and original scientific content presentation. EAE is a registered branch of the European Society of cardiology (ESc). Its mission is to promote excellence in clinical diagnosis, research, technical development, and education in cardiovascular ultrasound & other Imaging modalities in Europe.

Dear Friends & colleagues,

Next December the European Association of Echocardiography (EAE) will come back to Athens, the cradle of the western civilisation, to run the 2012 edition of its annual meeting EUROEcHO & other Imaging modalities.

Over the years, EUROEcHO has grown more and more to become one of the largest echo meeting in the world. Since the meeting has also expanded its focus to other imaging modalities (i.e. magnetic Resonance Imaging, Nuclear cardiology and cardiac cT), it now represents a unique opportunity for in-depth education around non-invasive imaging of cardiovascular diseases.

Usual symposia, satellite sessions, imaging campus, advanced and basic teaching courses will offer a comprehensive educational portfolio brought together by the Scientific Programme committee, chaired by Prof. lancellotti, which will meet the educational needs of more than 3000 colleagues who are expected to attend the meeting. Special sessions will be organised for the young community by the EAE club 35 committee and, as happened in Budapest, dedicated initiatives will highlight original research and acknowledge presenters of the best rated abstracts.

As usual during EUROEcHO you will also have the opportunity to take the certification exam in transthoracic, transesophageal and congenital heart diseases, to test your expertise and have it certified at a European level.

However, EUROEcHO is not only education and science; it is also a great opportunity to meet the greatest experts in cardiovascular imaging in the world, to exchange ideas and projects with colleagues who share the same clinical or scientific interest coming from all over the world, and to visit one of the largest exhibitions on cardiovascular imaging and related products.

Finally, the congress venue will be located in the city centre of Athens, close to the Acropolis and the Parthenon, one of the 7 wonders of the modern world. Athens has the most glorious history, a city worshipped by Gods and people, where democracy was born as well as most of the wise men of ancient times.

Debate SessionsBecause it is not always straight forward, come and listen to Key Opinion leaders debate on controversies in the diagnosis of chest pain - controversies in imaging - in echocardiography as well as on Eisenmenger syndrome coronary heart disease.

Main Sessions & Symposia90 minutes long sessions in which renowned experts present state of the art reviews on the topics addressed, with special time allocated for panel discussions and interaction with the audience.

Friday at 18:00 - ECHO at JEOPARDYIn 2011 we revisited the game and turned it into an EcHO game. An educational and fun session - we decided to reconducted it this year. Plan on staying with us longer on Friday 6 December - from 18:00 to 19:30.

Teaching Courses

Wednesday Teaching Courses Subsequent educational sessions to explore a topic in depth. These sessions are dedicated to courses in the fields of echocardiography and other imaging modalities and are organised in close collaboration with sister organisations.

EAE Core Curriculum CoursesProvide a summary of the core knowledge base within echocardiography, dedicated to an audience of cardiologists, fellows and for the trained practitioner’s continuing medical education.• useful for sonographers and physicists involved in clinical echocardiography• not to be missed for those who apply for the individual certification exam!

Abstract based sessionsOral Abstract Sessions - challenging interactive format!Selected presenters will present their research in front of a dedicated audience and panel of experts who will actively contribute to the session and interact with presenters on their research.

Young Investigator Award Sessions: Basic Science - ClinicalThree selected finalists will present their research in competition to win the EUROEcHO 2012 Young Investigator Award. You are welcome to attend and encourage our junior investigators as they present their scientific findings.We have this year added a Young Investigator Award Session to cover the field of basic science

Moderated Poster Sessions Your research in a poster format and presented to an appointed moderator in front of the audience in 5 minutes during inter-session coffee breaks.

Poster Sessions meet colleagues and peers who share the same topics of interest/research during inter-session coffee breaks. 5 poster sessions featuring all topics, at each session you will find new research on your topic(s) of interest.

Club 35 - How to sessionsSessions tailored for young researchers to guide them thought the fundamentals of certain techniques. These highly interactive sessions will take place during coffee breaks on a first-come first-served basis, make sure you select your session of interest.

EUROECHO 2012

Delegates are cordially invited to attend a series of Satellite Symposia accepted and included in the EUROEcHO & other Imaging modalities 2012 scientific programme. These sessions will offer you an in-depth view of scientific progress and research in cardiovascular care from Wednesday 5 to Friday 8 December. For details on the programme, please keep an eye on our website in the coming months.

Access a series of tutorials for practical training and/or hands-on learning in key areas of non invasive imaging with learning objectives and accreditation. Sessions will run four times per day on Thursday 6 & Friday 7 December in the Imaging campus. Registration for the Imaging campus sessions is mandatory as the number of participants at each session is limited to 30. For more information regarding the programme and how to register, please keep an eye on our website in the coming months.

At the heart of the congress centre, the exhibition will provide you with the opportunity to exchange with key industry experts on critical areas of development and research in cardiovascular products and therapies. “Being an EAE member gives me a sense of being part of the wider international echocardiography community. Getting the EAE newsletter from time to time prompts me to connect to the EAE website which is an excellent resource, full of different modes and approaches that keep me informed and up to date in the field. There are lectures, cases, guidelines, an echo course, sessions from the past meetings and more. I also find the European Journal of Echocardiography, which is included with the EAE membership, very helpful. It provides articles that deal with very relevant aspects of the echo practice that you don’t find in general car-diology publications and are mainly of interest to echocardiographers. Both provide a wealth of materials for further education of the staff here as well as for lec-tures I give. The EAE’s webinars are great! They provide an excellent opportunity to interact with the speakers, and I especially like the idea of listening in real time, and knowing that hundreds of other echocardiographers from around the world are doing the same thing and can share their views of practicing echo live.

I also benefit from attending the annual meetings, meeting friends and colleagues and hearing about the new echo techniques in a concise and interesting way. I have found the practical sessions on 3-D echo, strain and small animals particularly helpful.”

“I joined the ESc’s Working Group on Echocardiography in 1998, which later evolved into the European Association of Echocardiography(EAE) and have been an enthusiastic member ever since. For me, the EAE delivers extremely valuable educational resources providing both slides and webcasts that I can use in my teaching. I find the European Journal of Echocardiography, which you get as part of the membership, provides really helpful scientific data that informs both my clinical and research activities.

The annual meetings have allowed me to meet other colleagues, many of whom have become close friends, and I’ve really appreciated the help they’ve given me over the years in identifying research opportunities. In the early days I found that it was a real career boost when I got abstracts accepted at the congress. I find it really hard to suggest how the EAE could be improved since it’s constantly evolving as an organisation and bringing exciting new ideas and possibilities to its members.”

“I find that the most helpful aspect of being a member of club 35, is the information that I receive in the monthly newsletters which contain vital information about the deadlines for grant applications, dates of upcoming congresses and details of opportunities for fellowships. Before club 35 was created for echocardiographers under 35 years I don’t know how we managed – there’s just no other place to go for this kind of information. club 35 is also great for education and training you get free access to the European Journal of Echocardiography and opportunities to attend webinars online.

club 35 also gives young cardiologists the opportunity to get experience presenting at international meetings. I’m giving a talk about aortic valve regurgitation in the EUROEcHO club 35 session “The best in heart valve disease”. It’s the first time I’ve had the opportunity to present to an international audience in the English language, which is a bit daunting but it should be an invaluable experience.”

“In my hospital there are few young cardiologists training to be echocardiographers, which can be isolating. By joining club 35 and coming to Budapest I’m hoping to network with other colleagues interested in echo at similar stages in their careers.

One of my ambitions is to undertake an exchange programme in another European country where I’d get the opportunity to try out different imaging techniques. I’m therefore hoping to link up with other young cardiologists who’d be open to exchanging jobs for a few weeks or months. I’m also hoping club 35 could facilitate my research. At the moment I’m undertaking a project studying ventricular function in arrhyth-mogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVc) with 2-D speckle tracking and 3-D strain echocardiography. However, the number of patients in my centre with this disease is proving too small to be able to draw conclusions. I’m therefore hoping to develop reciprocal relationships with other echocardiographers where we could help each other recruit subjects.”
