    Using the Presentations

The presentations and their readings can be used in a

variety of ways, but they all are intended to be used after

the bulk of a chapter has been covered in class.

The individual paragraphs can be printed out and assigned

for homework, or they can be handed out in class for pairs

or small groups to study. They can also simply be

projected onscreen for the whole class to study together.

The practice slides are equally flexible and can be used aswhole class reviews, pair or small group work, or informal,

    individual quizzes.

The earliest known use of wind power was the sailboat, andfrom this technology windmills were invented. The first windmills

were developed in Persia in 500-900 A.D. They wereused for

pumping water and grinding grain. In the 13th and 14th centuries,

the first mills in western Europe wereused for irrigation, grain-

grinding, and saw-milling of timber. In the 19th century, when the

steam engine wasinvented, the use of wind power declined in

Europe. But thousands of miles to the west in the U.S., the next

phase of wind powerwasbeingdeveloped-- windmills were

used by cowboys and farmers to provide water for livestock and

families. And in the late 19th century, they were used by scientists

    to generate electricity.
