My day here at the Butterfly Project touched me in many ways. I cannot fathom the amount of lives lost and I will leave here trying to be kinder to others. The most touching part for me was listening to the survivors tell their stories. I have left here with a new perspective on some things, like how to treat people.

I’ve battled with my weight for most of my life. In high school, I was always a bit heavy, although playing competitive tennis kept me in decent shape. After college, still heavier, I would embark on countless diets. Even when I was able to drop quite a bit of weight (a pre-wedding Atkins’ Diet was particularly successful), I would gain every last pound back when my resolve weakened again. Once I had my two children, ages 5 ½ and 7, it became more difficult to find the time (and inspiration) to lose weight. As the numbers on the scale continued to creep, I would stand in front of my mirror and find a way to rationalize the reflection staring back at me.

In January, armed with my first Fit Bit, I took advantage of a free, one-week trial membership at the JCC. I immediately loved the facilities and knew this was the place for a new beginning. But I also knew that I needed help to jumpstart my fitness regime. So I signed up for personal training three times a week with Mollie. Her personality was a perfect fit for me – an awesome blend of enthusiasm, encouragement and toughness. Our first sessions immediately took me out of my comfort zone and into the weight room. Dumbbells, bench press, squats, dead-lifts. I spent the first weeks in a state of perpetual, but satisfying, soreness.

I found myself getting into a great routine. Throughout January, February, and March, I came to the J every day, taking only the weekends off. Three days a week, I’d drop my kids off at school and dash to the J. I’d squeeze in 45 minutes of cardio – walking the track or doing the elliptical – then train with Mollie for a half-hour. Then, I’d do more cardio. On the other two weekdays, I’d come in the afternoon and get my 10,000 steps. At home, I was eating healthfully and watching my portion control. I found it easier to resist unhealthy choices –it simply was not worth the calories I was working so hard to burn. After I finished my first 20 sessions with Mollie, I signed up for more. In late March, I ran a 5K and survived it. As the pounds continued to drop, I became more and more motivated.

Today, I’ve lost nearly 30 pounds. I still have a long journey ahead, but for the first time, I feel like I’ve found something more important than a new number on the scale – I’ve found a lifestyle. – Ashley Ausman
