Creative cooking

Sugar craft classes are ideal for people who want to learn how to decorate a cake using sugar flowers, modelling and piping. Some of our previous learners have become self-employed cake decorators.

LearnerstoryDavid said, “I have been unwell for a long time with mental ill health. I found myself staying at home to avoid going out and speaking to people. Over a period of years I withdrew from all social events and eventually I gave up work too. I was very low and depressed. Then a friend encouraged me to join an art class with him. I was reluctant at first, but my friend would not take no for an answer. After a few weeks I realised how much I enjoyed it and I learnt that drawing and putting paint onto paper was something I was good at. I am very proud of my art work and I look forward to the class each week. I think my mental health is better and I have found something to motivate me to get out of the house. I would recommend joining a class – you may discover a talent you never knew you had”.

Deaf awareness training

What are the benefits to my organisation of becoming deaf aware?

Deaf awareness training increases employee interaction and confidence and teaches organisations and teams how to communicate better with colleagues, customers and service users who have a hearing loss.

How do I make my organisation deaf aware?

Adult and Community Learning Deaf Awareness workshops cover the main principles of deaf awareness including practical ways to interact with people who have a hearing loss.

Course options

Our half-day course can be delivered either at your premises or in a local accessible venue and is facilitated by an experienced adult tutor.

There is a minimum requirement of 10 people for the course to run. Cost is negotiable.

For more information please call Dudley Adult and Community Learning on 01384 814227.

Did you know that 1 in 6 people in the UK is affected by hearing loss. Being deaf aware is being able to understand and recognise the challenges of deafness and having the right skills to be able to communicate better with someone who has a hearing loss.

PAGE 23

LearnerstoryKeith works in a supermarket with a colleague who has hearing impairment. He joined one of our Deaf Awareness courses to learn some basic communication techniques and to help him to understand some of the barriers faced by his colleague in the workplace. Keith enjoyed the course so much that he went on to do a qualification in British Sign Language at a college. He said, “It was very rewarding to do and I now recognise when customers visit the store some of the issues they face with deafness”.

LearnerstoryMy name is Raymond and I have a learning disability. I like learning new things and meeting people. One day I want to have a job that is interesting and earn some money but I find it hard to concentrate for long periods of time and I find reading and writing difficult. This year I went on a course called Life, Living and Work at Dudley Wood learning centre. The course was great and I really enjoyed it. I learnt how to cook and eat healthy food, use a computer, solve problems, work as part of a team, be able to talk with people. I learnt how to search for a job and get ready for work. The course helped me to find out what skills I already had and what else I would need to do. At the end of the course I got a qualification which I have put on my new CV. I am now going to start an English class to improve my reading and writing which I am now ready to do.

Life, Living and Work

On this course you can:

• learn how to problem solve • learn social interaction skills • learn how to work in a team • learn how to use a computer • learn how to make healthy food • work towards gaining skills

and knowledge for further learning or work

After completing this practical course you will get credits towards a qualification.

The course is popular and learners need to be unemployed and meet the eligible criteria to secure a place. For more information, or to book an appointment to check if it is a suitable course for you, please contact Kathy Adams on 01384 816495 or email: [email protected]

The next course starts at Dudley Wood NLC on Tuesday 10 September 2019 from 10.30am to 3pm.

This course is for adults with a learning disability or difficulty who want to learn skills for life, living and work.

Family learning

Courses include: • Family Learning - supporting your child’s English• Family Learning - supporting your child’s Maths• Learning together• Family Language• Caring for Children Award • First Aid• Family Creative Crafts

Family Learning offers a wide range of opportunities for you to support your child’s learning and expand your own skills.

LearnerstorySharma joined a Family Learning class at her child’s school. The focus of the class was to support children with reading skills and it helped Sharma understand different ways to encourage and support her son’s reading at home. Once the short course had finished she realised that she enjoyed learning with other adults and so progressed onto a Keeping Up with the Children English class, where again the focus was on how children are taught English in school. Her son enjoyed seeing her coming into his school for classes and she became more confident in her son’s school environment and with school staff. Sharma recognised gaps in her own English knowledge so took advantage of the opportunity to continue learning and worked towards a nationally recognised qualification. This was all based within her son’s school so her learning fitted in with school collection times.

The courses will help you to understand what your child is learning and how your child is learning in school, so that you can support their homework. We offer further opportunities for parents and carers to work towards nationally recognised qualifications. These courses are offered in schools, nurseries and family and community venues across the borough. This year Family Learning will also be offering courses in Childcare that lead to an award or a certificate.
