This resource includes adult education programs in Washington, DC. Each page contains contact information and details about what the program offers. In addition to the resources in this document, below are two websites that continually offer relevant information on adult education, alternative pathways to a secondary credential for older youth and adults, job training programs, and postsecondary education opportunities in the DC region.
Career Coach DC is a website designed to help users find and connect to a career pathway by providing the most current local data on wages, employment, job postings, and related education and training programs offered in DC and its surrounding jurisdictions. Back on Track DC: Are you ready to get back on track toward earning a high school credential or pursue additional career training opportunities? Back on Track DC is a one-stop resource for District residents of all ages who want to get back on track with their plans to pursue a secondary education credential and a career pathway.

Academy of Hope Adult Public Charter School
Academy of Hope is an adult public charter school in Washington D.C., offering excellence in adult education since 1985. Ballou STAY
Ballou S.T.A.Y (School To Aid Youth) High School was established in 1989 as an alternative high school to provide an opportunity for DC residents to complete their high school education. Ballou STAY Opportunity Academy offers traditional diploma programming through Summit Personalized Learning, an instructional program that integrates high-quality, individualized digital learning in all core subjects; offering specialized programming to prepare our students for college and the workplace; empowering our young adults with the career skills to succeed in the real world. In addition to vocational training such as cosmetology and barbering, Ballou STAY Opportunity Academy offers adult basic education classes within our National External diploma program. Our commitment to our students goes beyond academic achievement, we empower our students transition to life after receiving a certification or high school diploma.

Briya Public Charter School
At Briya, parents learn English, from basic to advanced levels. English classes incorporate practical technology and parenting skills. At the same time, parents have the option to bring their children ages 0-5 to Briya’s high-quality early education classes. Briya also offers a high school diploma (NEDP) and training for Medical Assistant and Child Development Associate credentials. All classes are tuition-free. Briya works closely with the clinic Mary’s Center, and the two organizations share a building at three of the four school sites.

Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School
The Carlos Rosario School, a Tier One Charter School and national model in adult education and workforce development, has proudly served the District’s diverse adult learner communities for over 50 years. The School supports students to build bridges to a living wage through English language classes and workforce certificates in the DC region’s most in-demand industries. The Carlos Rosario School was founded for immigrants and English-learners and is open to the entire DC community. Our students obtain high school diplomas; pass the citizenship exam and become U.S. citizens; gain the English skills necessary to help their children with homework; enter into careers and climb career ladders; and obtain college degrees and workforce certifications.

Catholic Charities Education and Training Consortium
Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington, in collaboration with its partners, Washington English Center and STEP Culinary Training, offers integrated education and training (IE&T) services to District residents with an emphasis on preparing them for careers in the Construction, Hospitality, Bank Telling, and Customer Service. Community College Prep Academy
The mission of Community College Preparatory Academy {CC Prep} is to provide the education and skills development that will empower and prepare under-credited adults for postsecondary education success, viable employment and lifelong learning. CC Prep is a blended learning model that focuses on both academic and workforce development training using on- line instruction as well as real time. Goodwill Excel Center
The Goodwill Excel Center is a unique, tuition-free adult charter high school that awards industry recognized certifications and high school diplomas, not GEDs, to adult learners in the District. The first of its kind in the District, the Excel Center responds to the fact that life commitments, and circumstances can often stop people from continuing their high school education. We do this by offering access to transportation assistance, child care and flexible class schedules.

The Next Step Public Charter School
The Next Step offers students the support, knowledge and skills they need to succeed academically and professionally. We offer GED preparation in English and Spanish as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) to DC youth between the ages of 16 and 30. We offer a full-time day program and a part-time night program, which run from September through August, enrolling two times each year. With a bilingual staff (English and Spanish) and wrap-around case management, we provide a safe and nurturing environment that supports students and their families. The Day School program operates between 9 am and 3 pm Monday-Friday.

The Washington Literacy Center removes the barrier by teaching basic skills – word attack (sounding things out), fluency (reading at a proper pace), and comprehension (understanding and thinking critically) to adults who read below a fifth-grade level.

YouthBuild DC Public Charter School
YouthBuild DC Public Charter School (YBPCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YBPCS prepares students for post-secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs. YBPCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. YWCA National Capital Area Career Education and Training Center (CETC)
The YWCA National Capital Area Career Education & Training Center (CETC) is a licensed education and training program providing services to unemployed and under-employed adults 18 years of age and older. We offer day, evening and online classes in a supportive environment where students can prepare for the GED exam and increase basic reading and math skills through our integrated education and training program. We prepare students with the workforce training skills and preparation needed to enter and be successful in today’s workforce. Individuals have the opportunity to earn a nationally-recognized certification in the Hospitality, Administrative Support, or Healthcare industries. We also provide case management, transportation and job placement assistance, as well as tutoring support for adults enrolled in our program.
