Through the activities described in this pamphlet, UUCR offers a variety of programs to meet the intellectual, spiritual, emotional, community, and fun needs of our members, friends, and guests. Discussion Course on World Religions Reverend Lynn Strauss will lead this reflection on the major faiths of today. There may be some reading recommended. Recommended books are The World Religions by Huston Smith and any books by Karen Armstrong. Please come and participate even if you haven’t done the readings. There will be no final test. Answering Your Child’s Religious Questions Learn about resources, practice answering religious questions and initiating conversations about religion with your child. Committee Energy to Renew Our Lives The Vernal Equinox and the coming of spring have been celebrated by humans for thousands of years as a time of renewal, energy, planting, and growth. Participants will consider some of the meanings and celebrations of the Vernal Equinox in human cultures and will also consider the sources from which they draw energy to renew their lives. Date: March 21 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Leader: Deborah Kahn, Director of Religious Education Soul Work “After reading and participating in a discussion of Soul Work at my church, I felt hopeful, for the first time, that we can become more inclusive, more understanding of one another, and make real changes.” This response from a colleague made leader Deborah Kahn want to offer a discussion about Soul Work at

UUCR. Participants are asked to commit to reading Soul Work. (Discounts are available to groups.) A review of the book states, “This is one of the most compelling and transformative books that I have ever read. I can’t imagine anyone reading it without experiencing profound insights, on both the personal, spiritual level and the communal, religious level.” In addition to discussing the book, participants will discuss the meaning of “soul work,” “growing a soul,” and the place of spiritual work in social justice. Join a circle of eight to ten that creates safe space to talk and listen with one another and to explore deep spiritual questions. Each group meets once or twice a month and is led by a trained facilitator. Topics explored include: forgiveness, friendship, living though loss, the mystery of healing, service, joy, taking a stand, and what we love. Join a SGM group to make friends, connect to the congregation, deepen your spiritual search, and create community. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND POLITICAL ISSUES

Day Laborers in Our Community—Our Religious Response Many of us have noticed the large number of mostly-immigrant Latino men that seem to be always looking for work on the streets of Gaithersburg and elsewhere. They are known as "day laborers." The mayor, council and some churches in Gaithersburg are trying to agree on a way for these workers to safely continue to seek work. Casa de Maryland is a major voice for day laborers in Maryland, and they have been a leading voice in the recent activities in our neighboring community. Come hear Marino Cordoba, labor organizer for Casa, talk about who the workers are, why they seek work in the way that they do, and what are the best ways of accommodating their needs. Maryland The Beginning of the End of the Death Penalty People are often not aware that Maryland has a death penalty, but it does! Since executions resumed in 1978, five men have been executed in Maryland, two under the auspices of Governor Ehrlich. Former Governor Glendening had placed a moratorium on executions due to concerns of racial bias, and he commissioned a comprehensive state study of the issue. The results of the study will be discussed. Mayor Martin O’Malley, now governor, has made his opposition to the death penalty very clear; many hope that he will put another moratorium in place. Several death penalty issues currently in front of Maryland’s highest court will be briefly commented on. A few minutes will be spent at the beginning of the

talk on the international and national situation regarding the death penalty, in order to put the Maryland information in perspective. Questions will be welcome and ways to get involved to help change Maryland’s law will be presented. With a new governor and legislature, Maryland could be at the beginning of the end of the death penalty in Maryland. Date: February 28 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Cathy Knepper joined Amnesty International USA in

1977 and has been actively working against the death penalty since 1983 when she joined the Amnesty International group that meets at UUCR. She is a historian and author of Greenbelt, Maryland, A Living Legacy of the New Deal, published in 2001, and Dear Mrs. Roosevelt, published in 2004, and now out in paperback.

Middle East Peace: A Real Possibility Peace is the hope, the desire, and the aspiration of every Arab and Israeli in the Middle East. Hate, fear, and distrust between the Arabs and Israelis stand in the way of a comprehensive and lasting peace. Peace is imperative. Peace is possible, and Syria is considered a key to a comprehensive peace. Professor Ibrahim Soliman, a U.S. citizen since 1968, has maintained close ties to his Syrian family and nation. Since retiring from careers in academia and business in 1991, he has devoted himself to quiet efforts aimed at bridging the gap between the United States and Syria and exploring the possibility of Syrian-Israeli peace. State of the Chesapeake Bay This program comes to us from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), an organization whose goal is to reduce pollution from sewage treatment facilities and other industrial sources,

agriculture runoff, urban and suburban storm water, and air omissions. Learn about the current condition of the Bay and its streams and rivers, its vital signs and how much of an impact people have on it. This wondrous natural resource has been greatly abused in past years. CBF's vision for the future is a restored Bay with healthy rivers and clean water, sustainable populations of crabs, fish, and oysters, thriving water-based and agricultural economies, all of which will provide a legacy of success for our children. Come and discover what citizens can do to protect and restore the Bay. Date: March 14 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Carolyn Ricketts’ interest in the Chesapeake Bay

began with the many childhood summers she spent there. As an adult, she has watched the effects of pollution on local waterways, particularly the Bay. She now devotes time to help local organizations restore the Bay and preserve what we have left of our natural resources.

Building Bridges: Communicating Across the Israeli-Palestinian Divide The ongoing conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis is an issue that most Americans know only from sporadic, often superficial news stories, largely portraying what seems like mindless violence and intransigent religion. However, the history that evolved into today's crisis is complex and compelling on both sides of the divide, and the stories of the people who struggle to cross it often go untold. In April, UUCR member Pam Rasmussen is traveling to Jerusalem and the West Bank with Global Exchange, an international human rights organization dedicated to promoting social, economic, and environmental justice around the world. She will stay with families and peace-seeking organizations on both sides, and will report back on her experiences and what she learned from this experience. Conversations on Darfur Alonzo Smith will be leading a group discussion on the current humanitarian crisis in the Sudan. Alonzo will give a brief background on the history and culture of the Sudan, as well as a brief attempt to analyze the current conflict. This will be followed by an update on recent developments, as well as an update of recent UU initiatives on Darfur. Finally, Alonzo will lead a discussion about what the members of UUCR can do about this terrible situation. Date: May 23 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Alonzo Smith

FIRST FRIDAY FREEDOM FILM SERIES

The series features films that focus on social consciousness and are not readily available for viewing elsewhere. The films start at 7:30 p.m. and are followed by a discussion. January 5 Why We Fight (98 minutes) Is American foreign policy dominated by the idea of military su-premacy? Has the military become too important in American life? Eugene Jarecki's shrewd and intelligent polemic would seem to give an affirmative answer to each of these questions. February 2 American Blackout (84 minutes) Winner: Special Jury Prize, 2006 Sundance Film Festival. Many have heard of the alleged voting irregularities that occurred during the presidential elections of 2000 and 2004. Until now, these inci-dents have gone under-reported and are commonly written off as insignificant rumors or unintentional mishaps resulting from an overburdened election system. American Blackout chronicles the recurring patterns of voter disen-franchisement from Florida 2000 to Ohio 2004, while following the story of Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. McKinney not only took an active role investigating these election debacles, but has found herself in the middle of her own after publicly questioning the Bush Administration about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. March 2 Sir, No Sir (80 minutes) Risk, passion, and rage are the pillars of the GI antiwar movement that echo through this powerful documentary about the soldiers and veterans who worked to bring a message of peace to the public eye. Through interviews and extraordinary use of archival footage from

the Vietnam era, director David Zeiger weaves together the en-grossing tale of this overlooked moment in time. From mutiny and underground presses in the war zone to full scale-protests at home, this collective portrait of the GI movement illustrates a forgotten story of dissent and commitment to peace. April 6 The Ground Truth: The Human Cost of War (90 minutes) Hailed as "powerful" and "quietly unflinching," Patricia Foulkrod's searing documentary feature includes exclusive foot-age that will stir audiences. The filmmaker's subjects are patriotic young Americans—ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq—as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. The terrible conflict in Iraq, de-picted with ferocious honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home—with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indif-ferent government. As these battles take shape, each soldier be-comes a new kind of hero, bearing witness and giving support to other veterans, and learning to fearlessly wield the most powerful weapon of all—the truth. May 4 Reel Bad Arabs (82 minutes) This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged from the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood block-busters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs—from Bed-ouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists"—along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in U.S. history, and why they matter so much today. Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific U.S. domestic and international policies on their lives.

Drum Circle Are you energized when listening to upbeat music? Well, here is your chance to create up-tempo music with drums. No prior experi-ence is required, but all levels of musical background are welcome. Participants will explore some simple rhythms together with various percussion instruments and then have an open-drum session in which there will be more freedom to improvise if you wish or stick to the rhythms you’ve learned if you prefer. Instruments are pro-vided but if you have a drum, feel free to bring it. Come and get en-ergized. This may be the first of many monthly drum circles! Date: February 14 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Irv Chamberlain This and My Heart Beside: A Visit with Emily Dickinson A solo dramatic monologue written and performed by Candace Ridington, who appears in nineteenth-century attire as she plays the part of poet Emily Dickinson. Share in the poet's thoughts and feelings, joys and sorrows, learn about her family, and hear her recite some poems, all with warmth, wit, and humor. Date: March 28 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Candace Ridington has taught literature at Susque-

hanna University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is the author of Rubicon, a novel portraying the love affair between the poet's brother, Austin Dickinson, and Mabel Todd, who first pub-lished Emily’s poems. Copies will be available at the performance. Candace lives in Bethesda.

An Evening with Thoreau Come hear about the life of Henry David Thoreau, his upbring-ing, family situation and the independent streak that caused him to spend two years and two months of his life residing in a hut of his own construction on the shores of Walden Pond. His most noted literary work, Walden, speaks to that life but makes most think that he must have been some sort of a recluse. However, his life was much more complex than that. He was peripatetic by na-ture and participated in many far-flung excursions, sometimes alone and sometimes with friends, including Ellery Channing. Included were trips to the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, the Maine woods, the White Mountains of New Hampshire, more than one trip to Cape Cod, a trip to Canada, exploration of the

Merrimack and Concord Rivers, and his longest trip of all, to Minnesota. Interspersed amongst his travels were periodic lecture engagements, mostly throughout New England. The presentation will include readings, examples of books by and about him, and an opportunity for feedback by attendees to reflect upon their own life experiences that may have been influenced by this unique individual. Date: April 11 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Charles Burroughs Grey Whale Migration, Baha, Mexico Come join us in Baja, Mexico for the grey whale migration. We'll explore the desert, see four types of whales (some way up close and personal), and learn a bit about the incredible migration of the grey whales to and from their Arctic wintering grounds. Date: April 4 Time: 7:30 p.m.–9:00 p.m. Speaker: Sharrill Dittmann Stories from Rockville’s Underground Railroad Josiah Henson (the model for the title character of Uncle Tom’s Cabin) risked all for freedom and his autobiography inspired Har-riet Beecher Stowe. Find out about the young Ann Maria Weems, who escaped slavery in Rockville dressed as a coachman and whose story vividly illustrates the twists and turns of ongoing research on the Underground Railroad. Learn about two sisters from a prominent Rockville family who exemplify the differences between slave holders. Maude McGovern, of Peerless Rockville Historic Preservation, Ltd., will use pictures of local homes and churches as well as copies of runaway slave ads and other docu-ments to illustrate a talk that explores some of the many aspects of slavery and escape in Rockville. All Ages Potluck The monthly potlucks are for all members and friends of the church. The format is very simple—just bring a side dish, main course, or dessert to share. Bring knitting, crocheting, beading, watercolor projects, you name it. No artistic ability or special skills are required. Everyone is welcome and some easy projects on hand. The group goes on field trips, has sessions devoted to teaching, occasionally celebrate s birthdays, and goes out for lunch around the holidays. The group has provided decorations for church events, and sold its handmade creations at the Bizarre Bazaar. New members are welcome. mg.holmes@verizon.net Quilters The Quilters create one quilt a year to be raffled at the annual church bazaar. An offshoot of the quilting activity is the making of craft items that are sold as Christmas crafts at the bazaar. The existence of the quilting group provides the possibility for anyone who practices needlework to experience group participation in the making of a beautiful product while enjoying the warmth and support of friends who share an interest and meet together weekly. Book Group The book club meets monthly at the church and is open to all members of the UUCR community who enjoy reading. Fiction and non-fiction books are selected based on recommendations by book club participants. Information on book selections is published in advance of the meeting in Quest, the church newsletter. The book club also sponsors an annual poetry reading and potluck dinner that is held at a member's home. susan.hedges@verizon.net Walking Group The UUCR WOFFers (Walking Outdoors for Fun and Friendship) is open to everyone in the church community. The WOFFers' main objective is to have fun and provide an opportunity for participants to get to know one another. Walks are planned and led by members. Walkers and leaders meet at the church parking lot and car pool to the location of the walk. Dates, times, and walk locations are published in Quest, the church newsletter. Morning walks are usually followed by lunch at a restaurant near the location of the walk.
