Welcome to summer! After our exceptionally winter-y winter what a joy to welcome the light and energy and enthusiasm that is Summer in the Berkshires! IS183’s studio and school programs are a hub for experimentation and innovation, a space that is both practical and visionary. Enter the studios and dive in to manipulate the material and color of our world, to transform us, and to transform our community.
Your friendship and financial support are what allows our community art school to deliver on the promise of arts’ transformative power, with the most effective and innovative arts education programs in the region.
The impact of IS183’s programs on our Berkshire community is vital, and protecting what so many have worked to build here, over the past 24 years, is an effort I’m proud to lead.
Thank you for the many ways in which you have supported IS183 over the last year! As a student – see pages 7 to 24 for opportunities this season! As an appreciator - check out Slideluck (p.24) & The Naumkeag Artists Residency (p.25) that are coming up in July and August. And, as a supporter - at our gala (p.30), with Learning Through Arts in our public schools (p.33), to “Save Our Soda Kiln” (p. 33), and as a fellow member of Club 183, the philanthropic heart and soul of our art school (p.26)!

Experience three low-temperature ceramics firing techniques in a weekend. This is a great workshop for beginners as well as experienced clay artists who want to explore some new and visually very exciting surface treatments for their clay work. Raku, a low-temperature glaze firing is closely related to Zen Buddhism and the Tea ceremony. Glazed work is quickly fired and cooled outside of the kiln in wood, yielding unpredictable yet very beautiful effects. Saggar pit firing is a burnished unglazed firing, somewhat similar to Native American pottery as well as ancient Greek and Roman pottery of the 4th and 5th centuries BC. This firing will produce a generous pallet of earth tones of pink, orange, and blacks on burnished clay. Lastly we will do a Naked Raku firing which combines burnished clay with raku for a rich black and white patterned surface on burnished pieces. Bring bone dry white stoneware to burnish on Friday. Bring white stoneware, bisque fired to cone 08-cone 06. No red clay or raku clay.C01F15

The ResidencyOver the course of the spring and summer seven IS183 Art School faculty artists will create a new work inspired by one of Naumkeag’s landscaped gardens. Starting Friday August 14, for two weeks, the new works will be on view to the public, along with one additional example from the artists’ portfolio.

Fletcher Steele began a long and fruitful artistic collaboration that transformed the landscape. Pushing the boundaries of the Beaux Arts traditions, Choate and Steele wove new artistic expressions that take design inspiration from trips abroad - including French Modernism, into Naumkeag’s masterpieces, resulting in the Afternoon Garden, the Linden Allee, the Blue Steps and the Tree Peony Terrace. Today, Steele’s Blue Steps, created in 1938, are one of the most recognized 20th-century landscapes in the country – a true expression of his belief that garden design should be considered one of the fine arts.

IS183’s LTA program serves 1,250 elementary, middle, and high school students over the course of the year in both after-school and summer programming. The connection between hands-on art making and academic learning is simple; LTA curricula are designed to reinforce and, at times, introduce key concepts in K-12 academic goals and standards. Guided by IS183’s talented and experienced Artist Educators, students take part in a creative art experience that supports academic growth and positive self-efficacy.

Thanks to the generosity of our community, as well as terrific campaign leadership, we exceeded our goal of $11,652! 120 backers pledged $12,577 to help bring this project to life. Thank-you to all who donated, from near and far, to support the continued creative activity in our studios. The new kiln will be up and running for this summer’s students - come and try it out!
A HUGE Thank You to the amazing “Save Our Soda Kiln” campaign organizers: Kay Castelle, Adrienne Miesmer, Nina Ryan, Setsuko Winchester.
