Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast

What are the benefits? How is it used?

● Timely and precise aircraft surveillance from GPS position information

o Air Traffic Control has more precise view of controlled airspace

o Operators can follow the paths of aircraft and ground vehicles

o With ADS-B In, pilots are aware of nearby traffic and can receive ATM services

● Requires both airborne and ground infrastructure upgrades

o Airborne Systems

ADS-B Out: GPS (Global Positioning System) Source and ADS-B

Display and ADS-B Receiver

o Ground Systems

ADS-B Ground Stations

ATC Automation Integration

Flight Following Systems

● Supports ground-based relay of complementary surveillance data

ADS-B Technology: Link Options

● Mode-S 1090 ES (Extended Squitter) 1090 MHz (ICAO global standard)

o Builds on existing Mode-S standards with additional information (the ES)

o Required above 18,000’ in the USA and at all flight levels internationally

o Can be used in the USA below FL 180

● UAT (Universal Access Transceiver) 978 MHz (USA only)

o Cheaper installation than Mode S transponder for non-equipped aircraft

o Reduces congestion on 1090 MHZ

o Supports additional no-charge ADS-B In features (TIS, FIS, Graphical WX)

o Currently operational only in the USA. and only below FL 180

● VDL4 (VHF Data Link Mode 4) 108 – 137 MHz

o Initially embraced in the research community but not supported by the aircraft

and aerospace industries

o ICAO standards exist for VDL4; Eurocontrol performance analyses (2010)

have documented needed improvements prior to authorizing operational use

ADS-B Technology: GPS Position Sources

● Four TSOs describe GPS position source performance

● In the US, operator groups have petitioned to use existing SA-Aware

sources under waiver for some period following the 2020 mandate

● However, only SBAS/WAAS meets European/USA requirements without

use of tools like the FAA’s Service Availability Prediction Tool (SAPT)

The Applications

Page 7: ADS-B - Aviation Electronics Europe · ADS-B Technology: Link Options Mode-S 1090 ES (Extended Squitter) 1090 MHz (ICAO global standard) o Builds on existing Mode-S standards with

ADS-B In: Cockpit Display of Traffic Information (CDTI)

● Improved visual acquisition under VFR or MVFR conditions

● Situational awareness of runway occupancy

● VFR-like separation during IMC

● Enhanced VFR flight following

● Merging and spacing

● Self-separation or station keeping

● Enhanced visual approaches

● Closely spaced parallel approaches

● Reduced spacing on final approach

● Reduced aircraft separations

ADS-B In: Flight Deck Interval Management

● Provides precise inter-aircraft

spacing, enabling increases

in airspace throughput

● Increases throughput and

enhances safety

● Opportunity to apply RNAV

procedures (Optimal Profile

Descents, or OPDs)

ADS-B In: Paired Approach

● Objective: Attain near-VMC arrival rates during IMC

● Aircraft must accurately report and

maintain their planned final

approach airspeeds (Vapp)

● Safe window position indication

and speed guidance aids pilot in

in maintaining safe approach position

ADS-B In: In Trail Procedures (ITP)

● Allows ITP-equipped aircraft to safely maneuver between flight levels /

tracks where procedural separation minima would otherwise constrain

this type of operation

● Expected benefits

o Reduced fuel burn

o Reduced emissions

o Passenger comfort

o Enhanced safety
