Hi, I’m Adrian Granados

I’m the developer of WiFi Explorer & other Wi-Fi tools for Mac OS X & iOS

(A good friend of mine, I had promised her

she’d be on my first Ten Talk)

Community-Driven Development

• My background: Academic environment, research in mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) for tactical, airborne networks. Also ad-hoc routing protocols, cross-layer frameworks, lots of Layer 2, 3 and 4 experience in MANETs. Wireless and wired network emulators.

• Started coding Wi-Fi tools in 2009 as a hobby.

• I thought I knew about wireless networks. It turns out I didn’t.

• Main challenge: No Enterprise experience.

• Twitter, blogs, podcasts, CWNP study guides, and #WLPC have been of great value.

• Development of tools has been influenced and “shaped” by this fine Wi-Fi community.

Twitter as a tool to engage with the community

• Identify the needs of the Wi-Fi community.

• Observe (& learn about) technology trends.

• Get inspiration and ideas.

• Get valuable feedback & answers.

• Help spread the word.

WiFi Explorer 2.1(Mostly a result of being a full-time Twitter user)

WiFi Explorer• A Mac utility to scan, monitor

and troubleshoot wireless networks.

• Graphical visualization of Wi-Fi environment.

• Fast & straightforward UI, easy filtering, detailed description of information elements, device name, annotations, QBSS load information, etc.

• More than 180,000 downloads.

WiFi Signal• System menu bar app for easy

access to Wi-Fi connection details:

• RSSI, noise, SNR, channel & channel width, MCS index, max & actual Tx rate, etc.

• Various configuration options for status icon & main window display.

Airtool• Allows for quick frame captures on a

single or multiple channels.

• Captures automatically open in Wireshark (or your favorite protocol analyzer).

• Integrated with CloudShark (cloud-based packet decoder).

• Developed after attending #WLPC last year.

• Again, lots of feedback and help from the community.

• Free.

What’s next?• That’s on you!

• Tools continue to evolve thanks to the input of the community (Twitter, blogs, podcasts, #WLPC).

• Time for a “new” app:WiFi Explorer Pro

• SpecAn Integration: • Wi-Spy 2.4x/DBx, RF Explorer,

(HackRF?) • Passive Scanning • Other features in the works: client

detection & listing, better filtering, more views.

• Beta (work in progress).

• Maybe realize this is not a hobby anymore?
