Categorising this car is almost impossible. No pigeonhole is big enough to do justice to the new standards it sets right across the board.

You could easily choose a Cadillac CTS on looks alone. It’s arguably the most dramatically styled midsized saloon on the road. But that might distract you from the Cadillac’s totally nailed, responsive rear-wheel-drive handling or from the pure performance that will have you wondering whether you’re in a saloon or a sports car.

Thankfully, the CTS isn’t sports-car uncomfortable. On the contrary: it’s limousine-luxurious. Not just in the cushioned precision of its fully-independent suspension, tested on Europe’s toughest roads, but in the glittering quality and hushed, hand-fashioned ambience of its
