A.D.R.E.S.S.I.N.G. Log The world is an incredibly diverse place. In recent years, with advancements in travel and communication, people are becoming much more exposed to various aspects of diversity. In order to facilitate a greater appreciation of different aspects of diversity, and to better understand the issues that individuals who identify in certain groups experience, you are being asked to read articles or watch videos relating to those aspects of diversity. Instructions: The assignment is broken into nine categories, according to Pamela Hays’ “ADDRESSING” framework. You are required to select one item from each category. Open the link and read the article or watch the video (depending on the link selected). Once you have finished reading/watching, you are to do a short write-up about the item, according to the submission format on the next page. You summary should be fairly simple and brief, something to give a general idea of what the item was about. When writing your summary, do NOT copy the summary from the item’s page. Should you do so, you will lose ALL credit for that category. The two points of interest you write should be more specific. These should be about specific moments in article/video that really struck you. You should not only describe the part of the article/video that was of particular interest, but also explain why it was interesting.

Maz Jobrani, an Iranian American comedian and founding member of the Axis of Evil Comedy tour discusses his experiences as an Iranian American who travels all around the world, as well as the experience of Arab Americans in the United States.

Maz Jobrani has an interesting experience travelling. In spite of the fact that he travels in a post-9/11 society as an Iranian born citizen, he has no difficulty travelling in most countries, including the U.S. However, he runs into a lot of trouble in Arab countries because Iran isn’t on friendly terms with a number of the other Arab countries. I thought this was interesting because it’s so commonly accepted that the Arab countries are all on friendly terms with each other, but that’s clearly not the case.

Maz points out race relations in another country, where there is a high Indian population and Arab population. In that country, Indians are the lower class citizens, for the most part. When leaving a hotel, he sees an Indian Man standing in front of a car and assumes that is his driver. When he approaches him, he finds that the man is actually the owner of the hotel, and thought Maz was his driver. I thought this was interesting because it shows that even those who experience racism and discrimination in their daily lives are not above doing it themselves. It’s clearly something we all must work on to avoid.
