Architectural conceptOur approach to the brief and the site constraints (lot geometry, flood control level etc.) was to keep vehicle access to the edges in order to create a high-quality, car-free landscaped outdoor space in the middle of the site.The varied size of the units allows us to keep within 3 storeys in height for the townhouses, while also providing access to generous roof terraces for each unit. It also creates a varied, stepped roof profile that reduces the massing seen from Aspen Road and surrounding homes.
StorageThe outdoor lifestyle of many Squamish residents creates a need for large amounts of storage for bikes, camping and climbing gear, skis/ snowboards, kayaks, snowmobiles and other recreation equipment. In recognizing this we have maximized the available space on the ground floor for garages and concealed storage areas.
This area is below the flood control level so cannot be used for living space, so the additional storage represents excellent value for the residents and is an efficient and discreet use of the space.
Shared courtyardBy keeping cars to the edges of the site the centre is available as a communal outdoor space. Using the area beneath for storage allows the shared courtyard to occupy the same level as the kitchen and living space. This will allow children to play safely while being easily supervised by their parents in the surrounding townhouses. The courtyard is accessed The roof areas drain to a water storage system beneath the courtyard which will provide rainwater storage for summer irrigation. It will also slow down the runoff to the storm water system during heavy rainfall events.
Roof terracesEach unit has access to a private roof terrace of between 17m2 and 30m2. This space offers excellent light and views of the surrounding mountains.
