An electric company supplying and provisioning a variety of systems and devices, such as pumps, valves, and thermostats, at a large number of facilities, generated an incredible amount of data from these provisioned devices that needed to be managed and analyzed. The challenge for the company was to deal with and benefit from this deluge of information. The company’s current practice and traditional methods were either unable to capture all the data or were forced to discard shortly after capture. As a resultresult, the company had only a partial and limited historical view. There was a strong belief that the company would uncover crucial insights if they could somehow capture and analyze the entire information if they trod the Big Data route.

The company approached DataFactZ, to architect a Big Data solution to get their current situation under control. After an initial assessment of the situation, DataFactZ devised a solution that would allow the company to identify and capture important data points and merge them with their existing database management system to allow for deeper analysis like parts failure assessment, systematic device maintenance plan and cost maintenance. The solution proposed by DataFactZ leveraged an open-sourceopen-source software that provided a cost-effective alternative for the company and helped them understand the entire data science cycle, i.e., from the capture of data to the overt of crucial insights, which in the end was what they wanted all along.
