THE APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE:

2. A roughly sketched plan indicating the design,

plant species to be used and additional features

to be enclosed with the application form

On receipt of the ‘Adopt a Verge’ application

the applicant will be notified of the outcome,

including any recommended alterations to the

design. Once the development of the verge is

complete, the maintenance of the verge will be

the sole responsibility of the applicant/s.

This application is intended to be read in

conjunction with the City’s Verge Treatments,

Plantings and Beautification policy, 2.2.4 and

the Adopt a Verge Plant Species List.

ADOPT A VERGETERMS AND CONDITIONS

EARTH WORKSPreference will be given where applications are received

proposing the development of two (2) or more adjoining verges.

In accordance with Clause 2.4 of Policy No. 2.2.4 the City

will perform the required earth works and supply and install

a layer of mulch.

TIMINGThe City will undertake earthworks and mulching on a biannual

basis, to coincide with the Local Native Plant Sale in March/April

and July/August each year, subject to appropriate funding

being allocated in the annual budget.

VERGE TREESThe City is required to perform regular pruning of the street

verge trees. Maximum care will be taken whilst pruning is

undertaken, however some damage to verge gardens may

occur during this time. Any verge reinstatement shall be the

responsibility of the resident.

Upon assessment of the Adopt a Verge application, Officers may

deem a location to be impracticable due to a number of reasons

including (but not limited to) the location of the verge tree/s,

number of verge trees or root system of verge tree/s, public utility

services (and/or other services), gradient of the verge etc.

PLANTINGSAll plantings on the verge shall comply with the City’s Verge

Treatments, Plantings and Beautification Policy 2.2.4 and must

not exceed 0.5 metres in height, obstruct access for vehicles

and pedestrians or visually obstruct street signs or other

services. The policy, in full, can be found on the City’s website.

An Adopt a Verge Plant List has been compiled and can be

found on the City’s website. These comprise low growing,

native and waterwise species.

A selection of approved plant species will be available at the

City’s Local Native Plant Sale, held twice a year in April and

August. Approved applicants will be provided with a credit

for twenty (20) plants to be redeemed at the next scheduled

plant sale once their application is approved by the City.

Priority will be given where applications for the beautification

of two (2) or more verges are proposed.

The development of the verge area shall ensure that no

damage or obstructions are made to existing services.

Any works undertaken by service providers may cause

disturbance to the verge garden, and reinstatement shall

be undertaken at the expense of the resident.

RESIDENT RESPONSIBILITYWhere the verge has been developed with Council

authorisation, the resident shall:

• maintain the developed verge, ensuring that plantings are

kept in reasonable health and not overgrown with weeds;

• comply with the City’s request to remove the developed

verge if it is not cared for; and

• notify the City immediately if the verge is altered in any

other way other than approved in the application.

SKETCHED PLANThe sketched plan must include the approximate layout,

dimensions, plant species and any additional features

proposed for use. This sketch may be hand drawn.
