    F or the pa st several years, the authors h ave been investigat ing adolescent r oo mcul ture in order to learn more about the relat ionship between teens and themedia . The bedroom , they have foun d, is an im portant have n fo r m os t t een-agers, a private, pe rso na l spac e often dec ora ted to reflect teen s' emerging sen seo f themselves a nd where they f i t in the larger culture. Teens l i sten to mu sic,read magazines, w atch televis ion, do hom ew ork , an d con sider the events o fthe day in their rooms. They appropriate an d transform m ed ia m essages an dimages to he lp them m ak e sense o f the ir l ives . By looking c losely a t ho w teensdra w fr o m the me dia as they construct their identi ties an d per son al worlds,the authors have come to see adolescent media use as a d ia lec t i ca l processp l aye d ou t t h rough everyday prac ti ces . The i r Ad o l escen t s ' M ed i a Prac t iceModel highl ights the connect ions between adolescents ' ident i t ies and mediaselection, interaction, a n d application.

    INTRODUCTIONIn Rachael's room the bed is covered with clothes, cassette tapes and

    magazines, a red phone, and the cassette player. The walls are plasteredwith posters of the Beatles, the B52s, and a leering rock musician with hishand stuck down in his pants.     M u c h o f t h e p u b l i c' s c o n c e r n a b o u t t h e e f f e c t s o f th e m a s s m e d i a o nch i l d ren and ado l e scen t s cen t e r s on unhea l t hy behav i o r s , such a s ea r l y andu n p r o t e c t e d s e x a n d d r u g u s e. I n o r d e r t o l e a r n w h a t t h e s egirls saw as "sexual," t h e y w e r e a s k e d t o r e c o r d i n p e r s o n a l j o u r n a l s w h a t -e v e r t h e y s a w o r h e a r d i n t h e m e d i a a b o u t " s e x a n d r e l a t i o n s h i p s .
