Create a new documentIn Adobe InDesign, you can create multiple types of projects. When you open the program, you may create a document, a book, or a library depending on your project needs. A document is the most basic element of a project; it includes a single factor of the project. A book is a collection of the documents, while a library is a collection of the books. You will start by creating a single document.

To create a new document from the start

Creating a new document is the first thing you will do when you open InDesign for the first time.

Open Adobe InDesign.1.In the dialog box under Create New , select Document . A new dialog box should appear.2.From here, you can customize the format of the document. Once you have done that, click

OK.3.

Your new blank document should appear on the screen.

To create a new document from an open document

If you find that you need to create a new document while working on another open document, you can do so without disrupting your current project.

Click File.1.From the dropdown menu, click New .2.From the dialog box, click Document .3.

A new blank document should appear in front of your current document. If you want to open a previously created document, use the following instructions to learn how.

Page 6: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

Open a documentIf you have previously worked with InDesign, or if you need to edit a previously created InDesign document, you have several options for opening the document. You can easily open a previously created document both when you open InDesign and from a currently open InDesign document.

To open a document from the start

If you are editing a project and need to open it to begin working, you can do so as soon as you open InDesign.

Open InDesign.1.From the dialog box, select Open.2.In the Open a File dialog box, select the file you want to open, then click Open .3.

The document will appear on the screen.

To open a document from an open document

If you are working in another InDesign document and you need to open a document, you can do so directly from your current project.

Click File.1.From the dropdown menu, click Open .2.From the Open a File dialog box, select the file you want to open, then click Open .3.

The document will appear on the screen. To save time and to organize your work, you may want to create master pages for your document once you’ve opened it.

Page 7: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

Create master pagesYou can use master pages to create a template for the rest of your document. In a master page, you can define the design, colors, and overall look of the pages in the document. Using master pages decreases the amount of time you spend formatting each individual page of the document. You can spend more time fixing the differences among pages rather than the elements that remain the same.

To create a master page

Your first master page will likely cover the main pages of text in your document.Click Pages in the panel group in the right-side vertical dock.1.Select A-Master .2.

Format the blank page on the screen to your desired design template.3.Double-click the first page toward the bottom of the panel.4.

The page should now be formatted according to the design of your template in the master page. You can also apply the master page to other pages that you have already created in the document.

To apply a master page

Once you have created your master page, you can apply it to whatever pages you need to.

Open the Pages panel from the vertical dock.1.

Page 8: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

Select the page(s) in the panel that you want to apply the master page to. You can select multiple pages by holding down Ctrl while clicking the left mouse button.

2.

Right-click anywhere in the page(s).3.In the dialog box, click Apply to Master Pages .4.In the Apply Master dialog box, click the Apply Master dropdown menu to select the

master you want to apply.5.

Click the To Pages dropdown menu to select the pages you want to apply the master to.6.

To create additional master pages

Once you have created your first master page, you can create and apply other master pages for parts such as title pages, main text pages with different layouts, etc.

Click anywhere in the Pages panel.1.

Click the Create new page button.2.Double-click the new master page(s).3.Format and design the new master page.4.

From here, you can apply the new master pages as you wish. Once you have created your master pages, you can create layers to further organize your work.

Page 9: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

Use LayersYou can use layers to avoid ruining parts of your design while working on other aspects. For example, you can keep your text in one layer and your background image in another layer. With only the text layer selected, you can change your text without affecting your background image. Before you create a new layer, everything in your document will be listed in Layer 1.

To create a layer

You will probably create multiple layers to organize the various aspects of your work, such as text layers, image layers, background layers, etc.

Click Layers in the panel group in the vertical dock.1.

Click the Create new layer button on the bottom of the panel.2. Layer 2 should appear in the Layers panel with another color by its checkbox. You can create as many layers as you need to organize your work. You can take several steps to work in individual layers at one time.

To move an item from one layer to another

Sometimes, you may accidentally place an object under one layer that needs to go under another. You can easily move objects to different layers as needed.

Expand the layer the item is currently listed under.1.Click and drag the item to the layer you want to put the item under.2.

To lock a layer

When you want to work only with one layer or only with specific layers, you can lock the layers that you do not want to change.

Select the box next to the layer you want locked.

To hide a layer

If you do not want to be distracted by other layers while working in a specific layer, you can hide the

Page 10: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

layers you do not want to see.

Click the Toggles visibility button. After your layers are created, you may manipulate them further once you add elements such as text to your document.

Page 11: Adobe InDesign CS6 for Windows Tutorial

Using character styles saves time so you do not have to find each individual word or phrase that you want to change to the same but separate style.

Double-click Character Style 1.4.Note: If you click directly on the title Character Style 1, a text box will appear for you to change the name of the character style. To avoid this, double-click next to the character style title.

In the Character Style Options dialog box, select the tab for the style aspect that you want to define and change them accordingly.
