    La Salle Lady Spikers nail third straight UAAP volleyball crown25-23, 25-20,25-16

    The De La Salle Lady Spikers continued their dominance of theUAAP volleyball scene after beating rivals Ateneo Lady Eagles to clinch athird straight championship , 25-23, 25-20,25-16, Wednesday at the Mall ofAsia Arena, March 6, 2013.

    In front of almost 19,000 spectators , the Lady Spikers defeatedthe Lady Eagles in straight sets in Game 2 of the Season 75 Finals to sweepthe best-of-three series. It was the eighth volleyball crown for the LadySpikers, allowing them to tie the University of the Philippines for the third-most in the UAAP, and also the Lady Spikers 16 th straight victory this seasonafter they lost their opening game against University of Santo TomasTigresses.

    The Lady Spikers set the tone for the game right from theopening set, as they raced to a 5-1 lead after taking advantage of the LadyEagles lethargic play. Errors from the Lady Spikers allowed Ateneo to takebrief leads, 6-7 and 13-14, but the defending champions were regroupquickly. An off-speed hit by Cyd Demecillo brought La Salle to set points, 24-

    18, but Ateneo came roaring back behind five consecutive points from theSeason 75 Best Scorer Alyssa Valdez. The Lady Spikers were able to regroupquickly, however, to take the first set, 25-23.

    In the second set, the Lady Eagles showed better reception asthey raced to a 7-13 lead. After a block by Valdez allowed them to build a 13-17 advantage , La Salle reeled off seven points built on a sensationalblocking of Mika Reyes to seize control of the contest. With Reyes blockingValdez twice, the Lady Eagles started committing unforced errors and LaSalle took advantage, winning 25-20 after a Reyes service ace.

    The Lady Eagles again took an early lead in Set 3, 9-13, but theycommitted several hitting errors that contributed to a 8-1 La Salle run. TheLady Spikers dominated down the stretch, only allowing Ateneo to score twomore points as they clinched the third set-and the championship, 25-16.

    Three players scored in double figures for the Lady Spikers asthey overcame deficits in Set 2 and Set 3 to win, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16.
