Please also include a copy of the letter from the Bar Standards Board approving your application for Call to the Bar. The fee for Admission to the Inn and Call to the Bar is as follows: The inclusive amount is £230. (This is £105 for Admission, and £125 for Call to the Bar). We ask transferring lawyers to pay these two fees together, as Admission and Call to the Bar usually follow each other fairly quickly. The preferred payment method is by debit card or credit card. DO NOT provide card details with your application if you are submitting it by post. Failure to disclose offences or other matters 1 referred to in the Admission Declaration will be a disciplinary matter. Certificates of Good Standing An Original Certificate of Good Standing must also be provided with your application. This must have been issued within three months of submission to the Inn. account of serious professional misconduct or the commission of a criminal offence;

(b) in relation to a Qualified European Lawyer, evidence of the kind referred to in

Regulation 9(2) of the European Qualification Regulations, that the person concerned:

(i) is of good character;

(ii) has not been the subject of a Bankruptcy Order or Directors Disqualification Order nor entered into an individual voluntary arrangement with creditors; and

(iii) has not been prohibited and is not currently suspended from practising on

account of serious professional misconduct or the commission of a criminal offence.

Call to the Bar and Pupillage/ Practice If the Bar Standards Board required you to take any part of the Bar Transfer Test, you must have received your results before you can be Called to the Bar. Please note that you cannot commence any part of pupillage until you have passed all required sections of the test. You are able to commence the non-practising part of pupillage without being Called; however, you will be unable to start the practising part of pupillage until you have been. Therefore, please check with the Inn the dates on which you will be eligible for Call as this may affect the date on which you are able to start pupillage/ practice. If you are exempt from pupillage entirely, you must be Called before you are able to commence practice. The Bar Training Regulations set out the requirements which a person must satisfy in order to be Called to the Bar by an Inn and become qualified to practise as a barrister. They are available on the Inn’s website at www.middletemple.org.uk. Pupils’ Advocacy Courses You may also be required to attend the Pupils’ Advocacy Course. It should be clear from your correspondence with the BSB whether or not attendance is a requirement. If it is, you must complete the course before commencing the practising part of pupillage. The Pupils’ Course run by the Middle Temple also incorporates the Practice Management Course and so there is no need to do two separate courses. Please note that although our courses are run fairly regularly, we do have limited space on them and so it is recommended that you apply for the course you wish to attend as soon as possible. *A  certified  copy must  be  signed  and  stamped  to  certify  that  it  is  “a  true  copy  of  the  original”  by  an appropriate professional person, e.g. Doctor, Bank, Post Office, University office, High Street Solicitor. We strongly suggest you send a certified copy.  If you are unable to obtain a certified copy you can send your original certificates which we will copy and return to you.  For security and ease of return you may wish to enclose a special/ recorded delivery envelope.

the Mental Health Act 1983) nor addiction to alcohol or drugs, nor from any other condition which might impair my fitness to become a practising barrister.9

If any of the statements in paragraph 2 above is incorrect in any respect, please delete the statement as appropriate. 3. Except as disclosed below, I am not aware of any matter which might reasonably be thought

to call into question my fitness to become a practising barrister.10 If you delete any of the statements in paragraph 2 above or there is any other matter which might reasonably be thought to call into question your fitness to become a practising barrister, please give details in the box below – use a continuation sheet if necessary and attach supporting documents. 7. I undertake that while I am a Student member of the Inn:-

(a) I will comply with such regulations as are made by the Inn concerning the conduct and discipline of its Students11;

(b) If and in so far as they apply to me, I will comply with Bar Training Regulations and

with the Code of Conduct of the Bar;

(c) I will promptly inform the Under Treasurer of the Inn in writing if:

(i) there are proceedings pending against me in respect of a criminal offence or I am convicted of a criminal offence; or

(ii) there are disciplinary proceedings pending against me or I am convicted of a disciplinary offence by a professional or regulatory body; or

(iii) I have a bankruptcy order or director’s disqualification order made against me or enter into an individual voluntary arrangement with creditors; or

(iv) I am found guilty by the course provider of cheating or other misconduct on a Bar Professional Training Course or am found guilty of an academic offence by a higher education institution.

8. I have read and understood the terms of the further Declaration which I will be required to

Data Protection The Honourable Society of the Middle Temple (the Inn) processes and stores personal information in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the Inn’s Data Protection Policy. These may be used for promotional purposes by the Inn, including in printed publications, on our website, and on our social media accounts promoting the Inn.
