6783.—Abbreviated Titles and other Abbreviations in Common Use(M. 0449/43.— 31st Dec. 1944.)

The following list of abbreviations has been prepared as an aid to the understanding of naval communications. I t incorporates the lists prom ulgated inA.F.Os. 2152/44 and 4204/44, which are cancelled. This list does not aim a t containing all abbreviations in use, and certain categories, e.g. Admiralty Departm ents and titles, have been deliberately excluded. I t is not to be regarded as containing abbreviations authorized for use in signals on any occasion, and in view of its lim itations, abbreviations used in signalling are no t restricted to those contained therein. A ttention is drawn to the desirability of no t using in signals or letters any abbreviation which is unlikely to be readily understood by the recipients. A list of abbreviations for use w ith Type X in signalling was promulgated in A.F.O. S.246/44.

2. Numerous abbreviations in use in the U.S. N avy have been included and are indicated, where the fact is not otherwise obvious, by the addition of U.S. in brackets.

3. Abbreviations used by British M ilitary units and formations are listed in the Field Service .Pocket Book (F.S.P.B.), P a r t I , Pam phlet 3 (1944).

4. Abbreviations used by the Combined Operations organization are given inC.O. Pam phlet No. 10, Abbreviations and Definitions, 1944.

5» Abbreviations in use for Trade and M ilitary Convoys are shown in C.A.F.O. 2338/44, as am ended by C.A.F.O. 2645/44.

6. Naval authorities m ay, if they desire, forward for consideration am endm ents or additions. These should be addressed to the

Secretary of the Adm iralty,(M. Branch),

W hitehall, S.W .l.

7. The present Order does not supersede lists of abbreviations previously issued in respect of specific naval organizations. Any contradictions should, however, be brought to notice as above.
