Administrator’s Corner Sixth Sunday of Easter, May 21, 2017

Congratulations to all Confirmation & First Holy Communion Students!

Dear Faith Community of St. Cecilia:

Congratulations to all 110 Confirmation and 210 First Holy Communion students of our Chil-dren’s Faith Formation Programs (St. Cecilia School, English, Spanish and Vietnamese programs). I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Fr. Wayne, Sr. Francesca, Mary Alvarado, Beth Rojo, Tim Reid, Eliut Sanchez, Rose Schiller, the CFF catechists and TAs, the 4:12 Youth and Eucharistic Youth Teams, the parents and grandparents for teaching these students during the past two years of their faith formation. I hope and pray that our Confirmation and First Holy Communion students, the parents and the sponsors will keep up their commitment to the Lord by celebrating with us the Eucharist on Sundays and participating actively in our church ministries.

From Easter to Pentecost, our readings focus on the early apostolic preaching of the Good News of sal-vation and on the promises of Jesus to his disciples, especially his promise of the Holy Spirit. Today's read-ings explain Who the Holy Spirit is, what His roles are and how we can experience Him in our daily lives. The first reading describes how the Holy Spirit helped Deacon Philip to preach powerfully and convert the Samaritans in large numbers. It also explains how the baptized Samaritans received a fresh anointing of the Holy Spirit through the imposition of hands by the apostles, Peter and John. In the second reading, Peter shows us his God-fearing life, which the Holy Spirit makes possible for all believers, including ourselves, who live in the midst of opposition and persecution. Today’s Gospel, taken from Jesus’ “Last Supper Dis-course,” describes the gift he will send, the Holy Spirit, who will live as the Paraclete, the Divine Advocate, in those who obey Jesus’ commandments, especially the commandment of love. Thus, Jesus will continue to live in his believers with the Father and the Holy Spirit and they will not be left as orphans. The Risen Jesus’ continued presence in us and in the Church through the Holy Spirit gives meaning and purpose to all we are and all we do in his Name. As the Divine Advocate, the Holy Spirit will instruct us in Jesus’ doctrines and il-lumine our minds to receive deeper knowledge of our faith. In addition, the Divine Advocate will empower us to defend our faith powerfully and guide us properly in the practice of true Christian love. Thus, we will be able to recognize Jesus in the poor, in the sick, in the homeless, in the marginalized, in the outcast, in the drug addicts, and even in the criminals ("I was in prison..."). Acting as such, we will become true agents of healing and reconciliation in a broken and divided world.

The purpose of the indwelling Holy Spirit is to help us grow towards maturity and whole-ness. We all have faults that prevent our growth: blocks of sin and imperfection, blocks due to childhood con-flicts, blocks due to deeply ingrained personality traits and habits, blocks caused by addictions, and blocks re-sulting from bad choices we have made. The Holy Spirit helps us see the truth about ourselves, to discern the blocks that inhibit our growth and to allow Him to transform us. The Holy Spirit also comes to our aid and gives us the strength to make difficult and painful decisions. God’s Spirit actually lives in us, and we hear the voice of the Spirit, counseling and guiding us in the way of truth. Let us open the ears of our minds to hear Him and to obey His promptings. Let us be open to the Holy Spirit, our Paraclete!

Sincerely yours in Jesus the Risen Christ! Fr. Bao

We will have a special collection for the yearly appeal for Parishes in Collaboration.

Please be generous.

St. Cecilia Catholic Book Club

Please join us on Tuesday, May 23, at 7 PM in discussing “To Know

Christ Jesus” by Frank Sheed, Preface through Chapter 11.

Frank Sheed’s lucid prose makes this one of the most profoundly moving lives of Our Lord ever pub-lished. Here we meet Christ in his obedience, his compassion, his tears, his joy, his relation to Mary and the disciples, and in his unequalled and unspar-ing words that mined the depths of reality, and of real lives. We come to know Christ as he touched the lives of each person among the multitudes that fol-lowed him, and we realize that he is with us likewise - in each moment of our own lives.

The book club will meet in a member’s home from 7 to 8:30 pm on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. If interested or have questions, please call Kathy Long at 714 318-4678 for directions.

PARISH MISSION STATEMENT

St. Cecilia parish is a living sign of God’s saving Word. We have been called by God to foster a genuine, caring Catholic Christian community. God empowers us to be a visible sign of His Kingdom in the world.

YOU…..THE PARISH NEEDS YOU TO VOLUNTEER!

Fr. Bao and Fr. Wayne invite YOU to please take a moment to look at the page to your left to see all kinds of ministries and services we have here at St. Cecilia. Please pray and talk about it with your family and call these ministry leaders for more details. You may consider helping out only once a month, 12 times per year. There is not a lot of commitment required. Thank you so very much! God bless!
