Loaves & Fishes

Serving during Loaves & Fishes is a great way to meet people and strengthen our community. Wilkes is responsible for the meal on the 2nd Sunday of each month. In August that’s the 10th. Join us in the kitchen any time between 4 and 6 pm to help prepare, serve and/or clean up.

Historical Tidbits: Pledges and Hymns

A look back at "old" papers and records led to the discovery of two separate but similar sheets of paper.- A 1/2 page sheet of paper (no date) containing the Pledge to the Christian Flag and the Pledge to the Bible. Were you aware these two pledges existed? Did you learn them as a child? Do these pledges bring back memories of Sunday School class or Vacation Bible School?

Pledge to the Christian FlagI pledge allegiance to the Christian

flag, and to the Saviour for whose kingdomit stands, one brotherhood uniting all

mankind in service and love.

Pledge to the Bible

I pledge allegiance to the Bible,God's Holy Word, and I will make it a

lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path, and hide its word in my heart that I may

not sin against God.

Written on this paper were the page number and title for each of three hymns:226 - America, 85 - Onward Christian Soldiers and 96 - Wonderful Words of Life. These hymns are found on these pages in The Cokesbury Worship Hymnal. These three hymns are still in The United Methodist Hymnal (different page numbers) you find in the pew racks today.

- A full page sheet (no date) titled, "Flag Ceremony", containing the order to be followed for the ceremony. It included: a Call to Worship, the pledge to the United States flag, first verse of Onward Christian Soldiers, the pledge to the Bible, first verse of Tell Me the Stories of Jesus. The pledge words were printed. At the bottom of the page was this sentence, "We will try to sing the songs without hymn books and will not announce them". Can you sing the first verse of each of these hymns without a hymn book?
