    Understanding POWERPower is derived from the latin word potere (to beable); thus, power may be appropriately defined as the

    that which enables one to accomplish goals.

    Power is the capacity to act or the strength andpotency to accomplished objectives.

    Power is the ability to create, get, and use resources toachieve one s goals.

    Understanding POWERPower has been defined in multiple ways, some

    not so positive. Commonly, power is described as the

    ability to create, get, and use resources to achieve one sgoal. If the goals are self-determined, there is animplication of even greater power than if the goals aremade by or with others. Power can be defined at various levels: personal, professional, ororganizational. Power regardless of level, comes fromthe ability to influence others or affect others thinkingor behavior.

    Typ es of POWERExpert Power

    - Gained through knowledge, expertise, or experience.

    Having critical knowledge allows a manager to gainpower over others who need that knowledge.

    How it works?- Power derived from the knowledge and skills nurses

    possess is referred to as expert power. The greater thenurses proficiency in performing their role, thegreater their expert power.

    Typ es of POWERLegitimate Power

    - Is position power. It is also called as authority power. It

    is derived from a position a nurse holds in a group,and it indicates nurse s degree of authority.

    How it works?- Legitimacy as a nurse is based on several factors. These

    include licensure, academic degrees, certification,experience in the role, and title/position in theinstitution.

    Typ es of POWERReferent (Charisma) Power

    - Is power a person has because others identify with that

    leader or with what leader symbolizes. It also occurs when one gives another person feelings of personalacceptance or approval.

    How it works?- Referent power is based on the admiration, trust and

    respect that people feel toward individual, group, ororganization. This leader has the ability to inspire.

    - Is obtained by the ability to grant favors or reward

    other with whatever they value. Positive leadershipthrough rewards tends to develop a great deal of loyalty and devotion toward leaders.

    Ho it works?- The ability to give rewards/ grant rewards in order to

    influence others to change.

    - The manager may obtain compliance through threats

    in order to obtain the common goal.

    How it works?- It is the ability of the manager to punish others to

    create a fear in order for them to rich the commongoal.

    Understanding POLI TICSPolitics is the art or science of governing power.

    It is also defined as the art of using legitimate power wisely. It requires clear decision making, assertiveness,accountability, and willingness to express one s own views. It also requires being proactive rather than

    reactive and demands decisiveness.
