Spanish Electrics...

here is a common apprehension and

Tmistrust by the Brits regarding the safety of Spanish electrics in the home,

probably due to the lack of mandatory regulations for domestic installations in Spain compared to the UK.

There are a number of specific national practices, habits and traditions associated with electrical wiring in Spanish houses that significantly differ from the UK, ring mains, spurs, fused plugs and unpolarised socket outlets being among them.

One of the major differences immediately apparent is that socket outlets and light switches are permitted in bathrooms. Another is in new homes, where bare cables hang at the light fitting points without a ceiling rose being fitted.

So how safe are the electrics in my Spanish home? The short answer is for homes built since 2002, electrical safety is generally satisfactory. For homes built prior to 2002… unfortunately it's “hit or miss."

Spanish electrical regulations received a major overhaul in 2002 with specific safety improvements made to domestic dwellings, particularly to consumer units, earthing, and most notably the introduction of a standardised socket and plug across all of Spain - the Schuko 16 Amp type F.

So how bad does the wiring have to be before I actually need to think about contacting an

electrician? There are some typical warning signs to look for in Spanish properties that warrant major concern and should be checked. Top of the list are; illegal power upgrades that are not professionally certified nor authorised by Iberdrola; over-rated circuit breakers fitted by cowboys and DIYers that create a fire hazard; and dangerous socket outlets still in general use in old properties that give a risk of electric shock.

The most important safety device in your consumer unit is the RCD (Residual Current Device), referred to in Spanish as the ID (Interruptor Diferencial). It provides protection against serious electric shock. Ensure that you test all your RCDs every 3 months by pressing the test button. General ly domest ic installations are protected by a singular RCD - however you may have more than one.

The age of the property is a good indication that the electrical safety should be checked - an electrical installation is as old as the oldest component in it.

A Test & Inspection (T&I) using specialist test equipment carried out by a professional electrician is the only way to fully identify the condition of the wiring and should be carried out every 10 years.

The Convento de la Purisima Church in Mazarrón is at the center of the old town and the surrounding area houses the main market. The church is dedicated to the Patron Saint of the Village who helped to expel the Algerians from the area when they tried to invade in 1585. It’s a beautiful building, intricately decorated and well worth a visit.

In the Mazarrón town hall you can enjoy the exhibition 'Earth Furrowed, Mar Revived' by artist Javier Lorente of Cartagena. The exhibition consists of 20 paintings showcasing the panoramic images of the sea . You can view the paintings until the 5th July Mon - Sat 10:00 - 14:00 and on Thurs and Fri evenings from 17:00 - 20:00.

On Saturday the 7th June at the Cultural Centre in Mazarrón you can attend for free a paranormal day known as 'Murcia Mysterious' There will be 6 conferences through the day from 10am till 8pm. Talks will include info about Cartagena and its 3000 years of mysteries and legends. (Please note these talks will be in Spanish).

Urbanisation Camposol is a large residential

development of around 5000 properties

located approximately 20 km inland, in the

municipality of Mazarron. Situated in a broad

river valley surrounded by mountains, it is

predominately occupied by British Ex Patriates

and holiday home owners although there is

a lso a good mix o f o ther European

nationalities.

The Urbanisation is very well serviced by local

businesses with a large onsite Consum

Supermarket, a petrol station, post office, and

ample shops, bars and restaurants. It also

Explorer...Cartagena is located just 30 minutes drive from San Javier Airport

making it an easy day trip from the coast. If you don't drive then

there are buses every couple of hours along the coast that go to

Cartagena.

Once arriving in Cartagena it is worth heading to the old part of the

town by the port as this is the most attractive area with its

medieval streets full of bars and restaurants that reveal the citys

real character.

Cartagena was founded around 227BC and the city had its

heyday during the Roman Empire during this period it was known

as Carthago Nova, due to its history there are quite a few

museums around the city. The museum not to be missed is the

Roman Theatre Museum it shows the archaeological objects

recovered during the excavation of the theatre this is shown in

drawings, photographs, and audio visual pieces. You will also

find information regarding the architecture of the theatre as well

as the functions that the theatre had. Once you have finished

looking through the museum you will go out into the remains of

the impressive late first century BC theatre which brings the

history to life as you wander around. The entrance to the museum

is by the beautiful town hall where you can also pick up a map of

the city. Other museums include the Naval Museum which gives

you an insight into Cartagena's naval history. The Punic Wall

Centre for Interpretation where you will find remains of the wall

that used to defend primitive Quart-Hadast today's Cartagena,

the site dates back to the 3rd century BC. You will find many more

museums around Cartagena ranging in size but if you just want to

get a feel of the city you could do the tourist bus or tourist boat

around the city. The only question is will one day be enough to

discover everything that Cartagena has to offer.

If you take a trip to Cartagena in September then try and aim for

the 26th as this is when the Romans and the Cartagenians take to

the street to do battle in the yearly fiesta which is one not to be

missed.

Campbells Senorio de Roda

2nd Annual Charity Golf Event

Campbells Bar and Restaurant in Senorio de Roda will be holding its second Annual Charity Golf Event on 10 July 2014 for the charity it supports, the Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation. The charity golf tournament will be followed by a fabulous evening of entertainment.

The Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation was set up in memory of Basil Skyers, a lovely, warm, generous and funny guy and a frequent visitor to Senorio de Roda, and to Campbells. Basil died of the little known blood cancer Multiple Myeloma in 2010, and in memory of him, the Foundation provides practical help for sufferers and their families. This includes cushioned wheelchairs, t a x i s t o a n d f r o m h o s p i t a l appointments, assistance with rent and mortgage payments, and any expense that makes the quality of life better for patients and their families.

As well as a day of golf and a fun evening of entertainment, the charity will be launching its CD entitled 'Legacy' at Campbells. The CD comprises original music in various styles, performed and recorded by artists from around the world and is dedicated to the patients and families the charity supports. The architect of the music project is Executive Producer and blues artist, Clyde Morris of Infanta Cristina, Senorio de Roda, and Greenwich, London. The music has been donated free of charge, and all of the proceeds from sales of the CD will go to the Basil Skyers Myeloma Foundation to provide life-affirming support patients and their families.

From the 21st -27th July Lo Ferro near Torre Pacheco will be celebrating with a week long amenco festival during this week they will showcase different amenco singers there will also be judges and the winner will win the trophy known as the 'Golden Melon'. Singers that will be participating at the event include Alvaro Diaz, Maria Jose Perez and Miguel Flores as well as many others.

Sucina is a small village just over 10 minutes drive away from San Javier. The main heart of the village is the church & square, the church is called 'Nuestra Senova del Rosario'. Sucina is a mixture of old and new, and some of the older houses can be found in the streets around the church. Sucina produces almonds, wheat, artichokes, olives, green beans, melons, lemons and tomatoes which are exported and are the main economy for the town.

Avileses is located between Sucina and Balsicas and it is a tiny village. There are stunning views and great areas for hiking and mountain biking. The name Avileses comes from an ancient family who settled in the small village.

Ingredients Preparation method

Garlic & Sage Lamb Racks with Roasted Red Onion From CAMPBELL'S Roda

Serves 4

Garlic & Sage Lamb Racks

With Roasted Red Onion

Ingredients:

3 Large red onions (900g)

1/3 cup (80ml) olive oil

2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh

sage

4 cloves garlic, coarsely chopped

4 x 4 frenched-trimmed lamb cutlet racks

-Preheat oven to hot 200*C

-Half onions then slice into thin wedges,

place in large baking dish with half of the

oil.

-Combine remaining oil in small bowl with

sage and garlic. Using hands, press sage

mixture all over lamb, place lamb on

onion.

-Roast, uncovered, about 25 mins or until

lamb is browned all over and cooked as

desired. Cover with foil and stand for 10

mins.

The is the Day of Murcia 'Dia de la 9th of June

Region de Murcia' and it is an annual public

holiday throughout the Murcian community, this

marks the anniversary of Murcia becoming an

autonomous community this happened on the

9th June 1982. Shops, banks etc in the area will

be closed on this day.

The sees the summer solstice also 24th of June

known as Fiesta de San Juan along the coast

many bonfires will be lit on the beaches. The

biggest celebration though is held in Alicante

where you will see many beautiful and intricate

statues made from paper and wax, wood and

styrofoam lining the streets throughout the city. At

12am there is a massive fire work display from the

castle followed by the mass burning of all of the

effigies. It is a fun night with a great atmosphere

and a fiesta not to be missed.

Holidays...Craft Markets nearby...Every month you will find the Mercadillo del Peregrino market in Caravaca de la Cruz. There will be a mix of stalls selling artisan goods there is also second hand items, including collectable items. The market is on between 10am – 2.30pm

· artisan Market in Cehegin is on the El Mesoncicolast Sunday of every month, the artisan market is held in the historic old quarter and you will find over 50 vendors selling local produce and handmade goods. Parking is difficult near the market but you can park alongside the Centro Technologico de Marmol on the Carreterra Murcia and catch the free bus service to the market which runs throughout the morning. The Market is on from 10am until 3pm

· market in Bulla is on the 1st Sunday of El Zacatineach month between 10am – 2pm and takes place at the Plaza Vieja in the centre of town. At the market you will find stalls selling wine, cheese, cakes, honey, bread, ceramics, leather goods and jewellery. Every month a different craft will be celebrated and you will get an insight into this craft and a demonstration or tasting.

· In Mula on the 2nd Sunday of the moth is the 'Las cuatro plazas' market which features a wealth of artisan stalls. Each month there will be demonstrations, tastings, activit ies and entertainment. The market is on from 10am – 2pm in the town hall square.

It just got tough...On , new and far reaching traffic 9th May 2014laws came into effect which affect all road users in Spain.

The new legislation is contained within 21 pages of the Ley 6/2014 modificando la Ley sobre Tráfico, Circulación de Vehículos a Motor y Seguridad Vial 339/1990 but as in the UK “ignorance is no defence” and if you want to avoid potentially heavy fines, it is important that you familiarise yourself with the new provisions.

Here are some of the key points:

1. Speeding fines apply for exceeding the limit by just 1kph! On some motorways, the speed limit is being increased from 120kph to 130kph, but in many towns, the speed limit is being reduced from 30kph to 20kph.

2. If the Guardia Civil observe a motoring offence and note the vehicle registration number, this provides sufficient evidence to prosecute. Note that there is no need for them to stop vehicles.

3. A minimum fine of 1,000 Euros will be payable by drivers caught driving whilst double the drink drive limit or above; or in all cases for reoffending drink drivers; and drivers under the inuence of drugs.

4. The Guardia Civil can seize any vehicle carrying children without legally compliant child seats.

5. The very specific rules as to where children must sit in the vehicle (according to age/ height) must be observed, otherwise drivers face heavy fines.

6. Cyclists under 16 years of age must wear helmets.

7. Drivers have much higher duties to ensure the safety of cyclists of all ages.

8. Speed camera/ radar detectors are prohibited.

9. An EU Directive is to be implemented so that driving offences committed in one EU country are reported to the EU country of registration of the vehicle in question.

10. Much stricter rules are being implemented for the Spanish registration of foreign registered vehicles kept in Spain.

This is only a taste of the changes and with the increased powers and penalties it is clear that the authorities are taking a robust approach to traffic law enforcement in Spain..
