Applicants are responsible for securing all required documentation in sealedenvelopes in accordance with the instructions within. This includes securing official tran-scripts from all institutions of post-secondary study. Make your requests as early as possibleto ensure that you have all required documentation by the application deadlines listed below.It is important to bear in mind that college registrars usually need a minimum of four to five

    weeks to respond to transcript requests. Applicants who attended Queens College must followthe same procedures for securing all transcripts except for their Queens College academicrecord, which we will retrieve.     3.SPECiALDEPArtMEntALinForMAtion

    3A.ElshCeaveWStudents applyingfor an MFA in EnglishCreative Writing must sub-mit a manuscript (at least 20 pages) of their originalwork to the Graduate Advisor, English Department,Klapper Hall, Room 607, by the application dead-line.

    3B.ASud(MFA)All applicants to theMaster of Fine Arts program must send to the ArtDepartment at least 15, and no more than 20,2 x 2 color slides of creative work. These shouldinclude at least two drawings. Each slide shouldindicate the top and the dimensions of the originalmaterial as well as the applicants name. (Slides ofsuccessful candidates will be retained for analysisand discussion. Other slides will be returned if theyare accompanied by a self-addressed envelope bear-ing proper postage.) Again, slides must be sent in aseparate envelope directly to the Art Department,

    Klapper Hall, Room 172. Only the application foradmission and its supporting documents should besent to the Graduate Admissions Office in the enve-lope provided with this application.

    3C.teacheEducaApplicants to TeacherEducation programs must have completed asequence of academic and professional courses

    appropriate to teacher certification in New YorkState, and must include with the application evi-dence (copies) of NYS provisional or initial certi-fications held. Those with insufficient backgroundmay be admitted under special circumstances.Applicants may consult with the graduate advisorfrom the individual program involved.

    Applicants for the Special Education program arerequired to hold a provisional or permanent certi-fication in general education in the age/grade rangeof the Special Education program for which theyare applying [i.e., Early Childhood (BirthGrade 2),

    Childhood (Grades 16), and Adolescence (Grades712)]. Students applying for the AdolescenceSpecial Education program must hold a certificationin teaching within a content area (e.g., mathematicsor science).

    Applicants for the Physical Education program(Code 562) must have completed a bachelors degreein physical education/teaching including comple-tion of student teaching in physical education, andmust hold an Initial Certificate in Physical Education(all grades). All other applicants must apply, meet-ing an early deadline, to the Initial Advanced

    Certificate Program/Physical Education (Code 827),which requires three letters of recommendationand the added requirement of a Letter of Intentas described in the Graduate Bulletin and on thedepartments Web page.

    3D.MuscAll music applicants (except MusicEducation, program code 561) should send a pho-tocopy of their application directly to the Schoolof Music when they file the original applicationwith the Graduate Admissions Office. Performancemajors should list their major instrument below theprogram code (335) on the application, and shouldcontact the School of Music directly to obtain reper-tory requirements and arrange for their major audi-tion. Applicants living overseas or at a considerabledistance may send an audition tape. All other musicapplicants (program code 334) should submit cop-ies of their recent work: composition majors, sendtwo or three recent compositions; theory majors,send one or two examples of music written in thetraditional tonal system (e.g., fugue, a movement insonata or rondo form, etc.), and a recent paper; his-tory majors, send only a recent paper. These materi-als or tapes should be sent directly to the Graduate

    3E.MuscEducaApplicants seeking admissionto New York State Initial Teacher Certification inMusic Education (program code 864) are admit-ted only for the fall semester. All applicants mustinterview with the music education faculty priorto admission approval(typically in mid-May).Qualified applicants will be notified by the MusicEducation advisor about specific dates and timesfor interviews after the written application has beenreviewed.

    3F.AHsyApplicants must describe theirproficiency in reading foreign languages within the

    500-word essay. The GRE score is not required foradmission, but if desired by the applicant, the scoremay be submitted and will be considered as part ofthe admissions credentials.

    3g.EducaalLeadeshpAll candidates forthe Educational Leadership program may enter asmatriculated or non-matriculated students for theFall or Spring semester or Summer Session, provid-ed that they meet all entrances requirements:

    A minimum of three years of successful full-

    time teaching experience (e.g., completion of

    probation, tenure, contract renewa)l.A minimum grade-point average of 3.0 from

    approved post-secondary institutions for both

    the bachelors and masters degrees.

    A minimum of three letters of recommenda-

    tion from supervisors and administrators

    attesting to the applicants specific leadership

    skills and experiences (e.g., how the applicant

    has already contributed administrative or

    supervisory functions to his/her school, with

    examples).

    An essay of 1,000 words clearly expressing the

    candidates reasons and supervisory potential

    for entrance into the program, detailing his/her

    skills, talents, knowledge, predispositions,

    administrative/supervisory experience, and

    contributions to current school.A formal interview with at least two members

    of the full-time faculty in the program.

    3H.AEducaWhile your papers are underreview, you must submit a 15-slide portfolio (in aplastic page) of your work. These must include atleast two drawings. A CD Rom in JPEG formatis also acceptable. On an accompanying page youmust provide the following information for eachslide:

    New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP):Grants range from $37.50 to $275 a semester duringthe Fall and Spring semesters. Full-time attendance

    (enrollment in 12 or more graduate credits per semes-ter) is required. Students may apply for TAP online bycompleting the FAFSA online first. Before you exit theFAFSA Web site, select the option to file your NewYork State TAP application online as well. You will beshown a confirmation Web page. On that Web page,for New York State residents only, is a line to file yourTAP application. If you do not complete the NewYork State application at that point, you will be senta paper CUNY TAP application or an ETA (ExpressTAP application) in the mail shortly after filing yourFAFSA.

    or a U.S. citizen to apply for need-based programs.

    1.Perkins Loans (formerly National Direct StudentLoans NDSL). Loans are repayable at 5% interest.Students must be registered for at least 6 credits persemester. The FAFSA must be submitted.

    2.Federal Direct Loans are repayable at variable rates,no higher than 9%. Students must be registered for atleast 6 credits per semester. Applicants must completethe FAFSA.

    JbsFederal Work-Study Program (FWSP): Part-timeemployment on or off campus at about $9.00 an hour.Students must be registered for at least 6 credits persemester.

    ii.AcademcMe-BasedPams

    The following programs use academic merit as a factorin the selection process.

    1.Graduate Assistantships: Some graduate programshave funds available for this purpose. Students workin the offices of their academic departments. For infor-mation, contact the departmental chair or graduateadvisor.

    2.Education Internships: Graduate internships inEducation that provide full tuition plus a stipend areawarded through the Division of Education. Contactthe Division for information.
