Student Survey 2012

For information:

ETSC is invited to note the following initial review and findings identified in the above survey. A formal (detailed) survey report will follow at the next meeting.

Learning with Technology Survey (LTS) 2012 – background contextThe Learning with Technology Survey was developed by staff from Technology Facilitated Learning team, in conjunction with the Student Use Of Technologies Working Group (paper ETS/11/10). The survey was available to students between 10th April and 7th May 2012. This paper highlights some of the initial preliminary key outcomes of the exercise that have been identified in the initial review of this survey data.

Survey Details: The survey was sent to all learners undertaking courses at the University

of Ulster by means of a number of directed e-mails and announcements in the student portal and VLE.

To incentivise the completion of the survey learners were provided with a chance to be entered into a prize draw for a chance of winning a Kindle or one of two £50 Amazon vouchers.

Survey response: 1846 valid responses to the survey were received (1, 606 of learners completed 100% of the survey).

Learning with Technology Survey (LTS) 2012 – Summary of Initial FindingsA detailed review and analysis of the survey responses is in progress. Initial review of the survey data and responses has identified the following high-level findings.

Students view technology use as an integral part of the learning experience;

Students value quality communication and interaction with staff and fellow students;

Students value the convenience and flexibility of using technology to support their learning;

A large proportion of students bring their own device to the University to support their learning (laptops: 1139, 65%, smartphones: 1092, 63%);

Access to and use of smartphones is significant (and likely growing) at 64% across the student survey group;

Page 2: adl.ulster.ac.ukadl.ulster.ac.uk/public/docs/...13LearningWithTechnology…  · Web viewPaper No: ETSC/12/13Agenda Item:9 (ii)Status: GREEN. UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

The use of e-readers as a distinctive technology platform was cited by a number of students (271, 15%) to read course resources in a number of informal learning scenarios (travel, gaps in classes);

Student use of and satisfaction with current services are generally positive;

Student satisfaction with how staff use technologies is mixed with very positive and negative responses provided;

Students broadly are supportive of more technology use, in particular to facilitate more flexible communication with other learners and staff;

Technologies that students indicated a preference to have greater / additional access to in their learning included interactive whiteboards, video conferencing, voice tools, collaboration tools and immersive environments.

Technology is allowing students to better organise and manage their learning to better fit with their personal / professional life and to communicate and collaborate effectively with fellow learners and staff. In addition to increased convenience, students are citing benefits including increased access to and exploration of learning resources and an appreciation of the development of key learning and employability skills;

Students identified a number of broad themes relating to potential areas for improvement including:

o Use of technology to enhance face to face teaching;o Need to extend and enhance the use of VLE and other online

tools to enhance the learner experience in course across the University

o Provide support for learners with a diverse range of technology skills and confidences;

o Issues relating to network quality and access for students on campus;

o Raise awareness and support the use of technologies that are available to students to support their learning

A draft snapshot of overall institutional findings and sample qualitative commentaries is provided in Appendix 1.

“I do not like the use of discussion boards as a means of contact” (5)“Text messages would be very useful and ensures that crucial messages can still be sent out, even if the internal email system is down” (8)“I would prefer face-to-face contact but you don’t offer the option of digital face to face e.g. Skype (or any other video/audio based medium) which I would prefer” (12)“….A simple text message would be more beneficial as I have my mobile with me at all times” (29)“For urgent announcements text messages should be sent, without any doubt as not every student has internet access on their phones and not everyone has a mobile” (31)“Some staff are not very good at responding to phone calls or emails” (43)“I find getting replies to emails is a problem as some staff do not respond in a timely manner” (59)“For important information to be contacted directly via phone or in person. Often emails are not received in time, can cause confusion and there can be no direct discussion. Lecturers also have a tendency from my personal experience to send email late in the evening with information needed or work to do for the next day, which are often not read in time” (66)“I have one supervisor that contacts me via mobile. I find this very effective as sometimes I try and distance myself from the email system to not get distracted” (68)“Possibly texting, to allow a more casual and comfortable conversation” (74)“Twitter or Facebook” (77)“Technology is great but not enough emphasis put on actual real social exchanging anymore, would rather have face to face contact” (85)“Personally I prefer the face to face method as it’s more personal. I also feel messages or announcements on Blackboard are easily missed, even with the notifications feature” (88)“Blackboard Learn is terrible! It takes 5 mins or so to load!” (90)“Blog/wiki with updates communicated via RSS” (92)“Some tutors create Facebook groups as most of the class access Facebook regularly” (94)

Technology has really given me the freedom to learn on an equal footing with others. A simple thing such as a spell checker or a screen reader is of huge significance to me and my working life and equally in my education” (35)“I cannot spend hours in a library looking at books and journals as I have family responsibilities so in the evening I do my research from home, so if I did not have access to technology I don’t think I would be able to do coursework effectively” (41)“Information management – manage notes and compile these into coursework pieces” (42)“My first use would be using technology for doing my work as it is a design course I use computer programs constantly to create work” (43)“Mine is online distance learning course so all of the above apply automatically” (44)“Save paper. Keeping notes electronically is easier to back up, organise and search through. When working out practical questions (with figures and calculations), using technology is much easier than using a pen and paper” (45)“Data analysis and manipulation” (46)

Q20. Sample Commentaries (127 comments)

“Library services are not good. Friendly staff though. Access to articles is very difficult and complicated. You offer courses, where the library is not prepared for. Lots of medical articles are non-accessible, where other universities like UWE or Cardiff have access to. Ordering articles is not time-efficient (took me 2 weeks to get my articles!)” (1)“Using 'normal' email addresses instead of university mail would help part- time students who don't check their U of U mail so often” (6)“Timely feedback is not a technological issue rather an issue with the marker of an assessment. The means for receiving feedback are more than adequate” (8)“There is no communication between students on the blackboard forum this year. This should be hugely encouraged and facilitated better so that there are less feelings of frustration. It is hugely isolating not having any communication between colleagues when points need to be discussed” (9)“Blackboard on the university portal needs to be reviewed, none of the nursing students like it” (12)“Given the carbon footprint and the expense involved in acquiring certain 'paper' books, it would be beneficial to have the main texts for any given subject to be available for remote access in digital format” (14)“I have previously completed a module on-line. Initially I found this difficult as there was no training prior to the course, but it did help me to enhance my computer skills and I enjoyed the flexibility it offered and the ability to achieve a work/ life/academic balance” (18)“Computing part of course is great, lecturers and blackboard is so helpful for finding out what grades you got or if they have other helpful notes they upload them. However, photo imaging it is severely lacking, only has one folder which is for slideshow notes, no other information. Needs to have our modules uploaded with all of our grades shown, it's so irritating that you have to collect our essay for example to find out your results, it's not really practical” (20)“For some modules, marks for assignments/tests are not uploaded to Blackboard whereas with other modules they are. Some lecturers keep their files and content on Blackboard organised whereas with others it can be difficult to find a particular file quickly” (22)“Portal system not very well developed - basic library database system very good” (23)“Search algorithm used on university website often does not find relevant information. Inconsistent page layout/design across university website (old and new design mixed)” (26)“The mail service does make it easy to contact students and tutors. However, an out of office type setup may be useful. As mail is the main source of contact between students and tutors, it can be frustrating when mail goes unanswered and the reason is unclear” (30)“Technology is never used for feedback from my course” (33)“Although E-tutors have tried to set up chatrooms and tutorials on BBL they are not always successful and a great deal of time is spent discussing how to access them instead of using them. Feedback has been quite slow on coursework. It would be of benefit to receive feedback before next assignment is due to help improve understanding of what is required of the student” (37)“I think the lecturers need to learn about the new technology that is constantly being introduced to the University. For example when WebCT changed to Blackboard the amount of lecturers I had that didn't know how to use it and therefore stopped emailing important information and wasted time trying to put it through Blackboard” (41)“Blackboard as a means of encouraging inter-student communication on a distance learning course has proved to be extremely poor to the point of being completely ineffective” (43)“Use BBL and the BBL app for android, find both non-intuitive and require going through many screens to see if there are any relevant posts, new material released etc. Cumbersome and slow” (46)

Page 12: adl.ulster.ac.ukadl.ulster.ac.uk/public/docs/...13LearningWithTechnology…  · Web viewPaper No: ETSC/12/13Agenda Item:9 (ii)Status: GREEN. UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

“More I.P. addresses needed for peak times of study” (53)“Our teacher gave video feedback on the blackboard system for one of the assignments which was helpful” (54)“The method by which I access feedback is satisfactory, but the time taken for staff to give feedback is not so satisfactory” (55)“Accessing online library resources from home through the portal can be problematic” (61)“I am finding that technology isn't the limiting/enabling factor for getting timely feedback on my course, the modus operandi of individual lecturers is a much more significant factor” (62)“I find it difficult to access journals when I am not in the university, even though I have logged in and it says I am authenticated to Athens, I cannot get papers which means I have to travel into uni and cannot do work when I am at home” (65)“I most often speak to other students in or before/after class, so I don't use uni technology to collaborate because I prefer to organize things with students face-to-face” (67)“Only once in my 4 years of study have I had feedback online which was this year. Very good idea to develop it further!” (70)“The Blackboard system should be upgraded. Instant messaging between students. Online discussion forums cross-campus” (72)“Facebook is the only medium of communication for university amongst students. This is the only reason I have left my Facebook account activated” (80)“Again, BBLearn is pretty poor, I help with a first year class and its horrible to work with as both a grader and a student. The UI is unintuitive, there's no mobile version of the site, and content pages render horrifically” (81)“I think the portal could be better organised, sometimes it is necessary to make many clicks in order to access information. Also there tends to be some old news on there as well” (85)“Sometimes the software needed is not available or only available on certain computers. This can be frustrating” (87)“We actually use Facebook more than the course to communicate. I don’t mean in a purely social way. We actually discuss our assignments, results, share resources using Facebook. The forums are too 'stiff' there is no social atmosphere, no relaxed sense of community or collaboration. It is important to note that I do not use Facebook at all and only set up my Facebook account for participation in Ulster university (off campus) communication with my class mates. Facebook was totally new to me and I’ve found it easy to use and access. We were able to share files, photos and comments. Also via mobile learning it was easy to access and participate in Facebook discussions” (89)“Online services would be so much better if I could actually access Wi-Fi on my personal laptop in the Belfast Library. I can't study in the IT suite as it is too noisy and so I am forced to study at home” (91)“I would rather use school email for updates and communication instead of the mail system in blackboard learn. The search engine of the library is not so useful for looking up journals, usually I could only find the abstract of some important journals. However, my friends from other universities have access to those journals. I feel really frustrated about it” (98)“The reason I have not selected very satisfied is the fact that the wireless technology, in particular connectivity the university provide is often difficult to access” (99)“I am a part time PhD student and only know 1 other PhD student in my department from meeting her on twitter. Some means to communicate with other students would be a useful tool for me, as I spend a lot of time off campus and working from home” (101)“It would be nice to have exam results and class timetables or timetable changes texted out to us ! Also it would be handy if we could know if there were any free computers in areas of the library or computer rooms by logging onto something?!” (102)“The computers provided for use on campus (in particular the library) are extremely slow and I find it difficult to work efficiently there. At times it takes up to 10 minutes for the machines to switch on fully which I think is a bit ridiculous” (109)“I find it very hard to navigate around the UU learning resources, for example, pubmed is hard to use and find” (113)“Workshops should be available for ICT novices” (115)“The online journals provided by the library are quite limited, and the server used to find them is often quite slow. Often, the journals found in a search will not actually be available through the University service, and more often than not I find myself using a library account from my undergraduate degree with a different university” (127)

Q25. Sample Commentaries (199 comments)

“YouTube yes. Facebook….not so sure” (1)“I want to make a point about the first statement. I think that YouTube can be a good application for educational purposes, because you can have videos of good quality information and immediate explanation. Facebook can be a good way to inform people in a very quick time, especially informing about news in any subject. SMS definitely not” (8)“I personally get very distracted by the recreational aspects of these technologies” (12)“Although Facebook is a distraction to work it also allows you to create groups based on your class, where everyone can discuss assignments, work etc. and also what they find difficult and so on. It creates a support system” (13)“I acknowledge that whilst I do not use these others on my course do so effectively” (21)“YouTube has been very useful in my study of English for looking up footage of plays being performed etc.” (22)“I have gathered a lot of academic information from YouTube-Wall Street Journal interviews. I'm not sure how FB or SMS could be rolled out for educational purposes” (23)“Social technologies have significant potential for educational use, however, there are significant risks to both users and facilitators. On a platform such as Facebook there would be a need to be able to create a "Facebook VLE" app so that social friends are not being copied into every comment or hashtag I create regarding my uni course. I don't physically bring my friends to class with me so I don't need to bring them virtually. There is an equal issue for the university in terms of intellectual property and commercial interests. In their current form Facebook/Twitter etc. are too open. However a VLE with more social network functionality (as opposed to the current UI's of Blackboard, Moodle, LNI, Fronter etc) has the potential to be a revolutionary tool for learning” (25)“I have been a member of a group on Facebook created by my course for updates, events and information, this proved useful” (28)“Social technologies are viewed in some instances as being potentially negative. However, context is of critical importance. If for example lecturers were to communicate using Facebook events for seminars etc. it would engage students at a level and a modality they are comfortable with. Such technologies should only be used as a mode to assist in the communication and not viewed as replacing all current systems. Social technologies offer many new and existing developments that are to be welcomed (of course after consideration) that can enhance aspects such as collaborative research. Sorry for being a bore” (30)“I found a tutorial on YouTube a few weeks ago which explained to me how to do a calculation step by step and really helped me understand what I was trying to do” (31)“Many of my university peers are in a Facebook group (self made) that allows us to keep in touch regarding hand in dates / procedures etc. Also allows us to share useful resources” (33)“YouTube has taught me more about different aspects and areas of my course that my tutors have not mentioned or that they don’t have an idea about, and this has enabled me to be able to expand and explore my coursework and search for alternative means with the help of my tutors!” (40)“I have seen many useful video clips on learning a foreign language and culture on YouTube (43)“Our class has two Facebook accounts. One with just the class members and another with tutors. The class only group allows us to speak more freely and the group with the tutors allows us to get input and help with our work” (47)“YouTube is a valuable learning tool if the information found is valid - there is no control over what is posted and it is not peer reviewed. It should be used as an aid for understanding only. Facebook will never be an educational tool; it is merely a distraction for those with waning willpower to study” (52)“I personally created a Facebook page for 2nd year communication students as I am a class rep. The page has at least one post a day, increasing to up to ten posts a day around exams. Students queries are usually replied to by other students within minutes. It is THE MOST EFFECTIVE way for students to get queries

Page 17: adl.ulster.ac.ukadl.ulster.ac.uk/public/docs/...13LearningWithTechnology…  · Web viewPaper No: ETSC/12/13Agenda Item:9 (ii)Status: GREEN. UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

answered. It has also created a more friendly atmosphere within class, with everyone feeling they know each other better” (54)“I think LinkedIn is more suited for educational purposes, but since most people use Facebook and YouTube, it is also a good way of approaching people” (58)“Although I use Facebook for social networking I think the education systems should remain outside of the social networks” (61)“Social technologies will always be present so it is best we try to incorporate them” (62)“I learn more on Facebook/Twitter in an hour when I follow professional designers and artists, than I do in a full day of class” (66)“I believe the likes of Facebook is detrimental to education” (71)“Main concern is issue of confidentiality - I train social workers and we deal with very sensitive and confidential information. I would be very wary of students discussing placement work via a social networking site” (79)“I would hate to be talking to my lecturers about coursework on Facebook. I use Facebook purely for recreational and social purposes. However, video tutorials and such on YouTube are helpful” (85)

“FACEBOOK SHOULD BE COMPLETELY BANNED FROM LIBRARY COMPUTERS. There are very few PCs available because they are all being used for looking at photos on Facebook” (93)“YouTube could be a very effective 'virtual lecture' mechanism. I can't see that Facebook has any educational potential or merit though” (94)“Used responsibly social technologies can improve access to learning. But like everything they can also be misused and abused, guidelines need to be clear” (98)“I get Twitter updates on my Blackberry phone, if a lecture was on Twitter I could follow them and know instantly when assignments had been posted or grades given etc.” (99)“We have a Facebook group set up for everyone in our year. This has meant everyone can contact one another and keep organised with topics on our course. It has been extremely beneficial” (104)“Our Geography class has a group for only people in our course, where we have discussed exam dates and work etc.” (108)“We have a Facebook group for our class and find it VERY useful to post announcements, ask questions about assignments/class etc.” (109)“YouTube has been used and is okay in lectures but can be overused!” (123)“I have used Facebook as a way of advertising my campaign for my coursework” (128)“As per my previous page, our class use Facebook to communicate, share ideas and files and info. Its excellent but we all find the forums unconducive to learning and communicating. The atmosphere is frosty in the forums and we are unable to express ourselves or participate as freely” (137)“There is no way I would pay £3,700 + to attend university and learn via social media! I agree that universities should embrace a wide range of technologies but learning face to face is by far the greatest method of teaching. I do several online modules and these are challenging enough for that very reason” (142)“No need for this in the world of education. Only useful for gossip and to waste time. Retched things”(151)“Social technologies have many advantages and disadvantages, it depends upon the user whether or not they can be used as a useful educational tool” (159)“These social networking technologies are an effective, easy and cost effective way for students to contact each other and discuss coursework etc.” (167)“Social technologies is an untapped resource! Learning can take place in conjunction with recreation! “(171)“Doing a Communication course, an understanding of social technologies is crucial to my learning” (175)“Facebook is a casual technology and uses up resources that are needed for formal learning / doing coursework at Jordanstown” (185)“While I agree with the second statement, I think YouTube clips can be very useful for lectures. I agree more that Facebook should not be used for educational purposes” (195)

Q27. Technology has had a positive impact on my learning experience because…

Sample Learner Commentaries (Response Count 1,431) Page 1 of 1

7 It enabled me to study. Without, I would not be a student, as I could not afford it. I have a family and busy working life. I would not give up my job or family and live somewhere to study.

11 It has allowed me to reach out to fellow professionals in my field and compare and contrast notes with them.

17 There is a large amount of resources available that previously would not have been accessible. It is easy and quick to access information. I am distance- learning from England as Sensory Integration is not offered here so without technology I would not be able to undertake this module.

30 It has enabled to get me to where I am in life and aids me in my course. Without it I would not be at university.

33 I can keep in contact with other students and lecturers regarding work. I can access my course literature and do research 24 hours a day. Using technology in my studies saves me time as I can access work remotely from anywhere.

34 I have been introduced to new programmes and systems that have helped me work on my course work more efficiently and in more of a professional manner.

36 I have a virtual teacher 24 hours of the day 7 days a week.

48 I live in a rural area overseas and dislike commuting hours to the nearest University on top of work and family. Technology allows me to distance learn with flexible times.

52 The range of materials available is absolutely incredible. Being able to access information and keep in touch with tutors online has been a great bonus for me. It fits with my family commitments - very important to us oldies!

57 It is incredibly interactive and gets the user to use more than just their knowledge of their subject. Everyone needs to know how to use certain technology as it is the way forward whether we like it or not.

66 It helps to clarify information. It assists with my memory. It ensures I do not miss important information given in lectures or online. It allows me to interact.

71 I agreed technology has had a positive impact on my learning. It is because the online source like portal at Ulster enables me to get information easily. In addition, YouTube have some visual learning source which make learning interesting too.

76 It has enabled me to effectively communicate in assignments and reports, which may not be possible in stress-ridden examination formats.

115 I have been able to access information that I would have found difficult if not impossible. In the research that I have to undertake as part of my course it is of the type that I can use the internet to get most of what I need. I have an iPad that has become a vital part of my learning.

128 You are constantly digesting media on using technology which is the same as reading an encyclopedia or book, therefore you become smarter. Technology also increases your reaction and response time to questions etc... through the use of video games and questionnaires.

130 It allows me to be creative with my work and present my work in a more interesting format, I can now search for the information I need within seconds, research is now open to everyone as it is less complicated to use.

131 I am physically disabled (wheelchair bounded) have difficulties using my hands and depend on technology/gadgets which helps me working/studying with no assistant or co-workers.

134 There's no way at this time of age to avoid technology. Lecturers are using essential technologies, e.g. portal, email, Blackboard etc. to access to students and to upload their lecture notes to blackboard. Technology makes learning easier, and saves time for both students and teachers.

137 Without technology I simply would not have been able to return to university. As a distance learner I could not have hoped for a more positive experience of the key role technology plays in facilitating this means of learning.

163 Technology allows work to be more interactive and therefore more interesting for students. Animations of how systems work can be used via technology to illustrate and help students to understand work in a visual manor, as well as reading or hearing how it works.

180 It allows me to take charge of my own learning and access the information and resources I need whenever and wherever I like. It’s provides me with the tools to more effectively manage my time and my notes. Additionally the social aspect has helped me collaborate with others.

181 I am a mother of four and have a full time job, without access to the uni's portal there is no way that I would be able to keep up with my chosen course, communicate effectively with my classmates and lecturers, and get the information that I need for my studies.

212 As an older student it teaches me new skills, broadens my learning experience at time and pace that suits my work, study and home balance. It has increased my curiosity to see what is out there!

237 It has allowed me to learn things independently by myself. I am the sort of person who learns next to nothing in lectures and tutorials but learns very well independently when relevant, clear, consistent and organised material is provided on Blackboard.

272 It has opened different possibilities that I wouldn't have got before for I use it for entertainment and learning and also social media.

Q27. Technology has had a positive impact on my learning experience because…

284 Because I am going to use them in my future jobs, it helps me to explain some thing to my kids.

384 It has enabled me to access a wide range of data, communicate with other students and my tutors quickly and richly enhanced my learning experience as a student. Using assistive technologies is particularly helpful for my own personal academic career.

426 It displays a data interface that enables the user to create a clearer picture of the data on screen. This aids the understanding of information. Technology is new and exciting, it makes everyday learning more interesting and helps me stay concentrated on the task or learning at hand.

435 I access internet first thing after I get up and last thing before I sleep, plenty of journals need to search online first before order it in library.

457 It fits around my life at home- I’m a single mother with a crazy toddler so I can’t always go down to the library or sit at a desk with piles of notes or books (they would soon be "decorated".)

459 It has developed me as a designer, yes initial sketches are important for concept but software is needed to fulfill what I do as a Graphic Designer.

461 It has provided me with a platform to source and share information and to learn from my fellow students through collaborative learning. The use of discussion based technology such as chat encourages everyone to participate.

484 I feel it has helped me so much with my learning experience this last 3 years. I am now currently in 3rd year at University of Ulster and am out on a university placement ... My placement involves working on a virtualisation project ongoing in the college, and with all of the technology I’m getting to use; I find it very interesting and helpful as I embark towards my final year of my degree at the University of Ulster.

493 … the use of social media has helped me greatly. I have been able to use YouTube videos to break down topics for various modules, such as accounting and economics. These topics were simplified on YouTube and the use of images helped me achieve a better understanding. I have also used Facebook for research purposes on BMW and the National Trust. I access the portal from my iPod, and I am considering getting a smart phone as some lectures email updates on the day of the class when I have no access to computers. I also note that student use tablets when in class, which is an effective way to take notes and reduces the waste of paper. To date technology has had a positive impact on my learning experience.

550 It can facilitate access to resources and access to those who I cannot even see them or learn from them in my entire life. Technology can add synergy to my learning with helping students to communicate easily and anytime together. Even from every part of the world, it can bring students and teachers in one meeting.

594 Not only is it a fun way to learn but very much offers variety to my learning experiences. I feel that if I did not have access to the different types of technology would affect my learning experience in the sense that technology has encouraged my own individual learning.

615 It helps me find information, that is the only positive. Technology is dehumanising and isolating.

662 It has opened my mind to new ways of learning thus teaching me and allowing me to gain more skills that are marketable and transferable. I believe all that I have gained will go a long way to effecting high standards irregardless of the work I do. Technology is central to life now and the fact that my learning involves it, makes the prospects for the future look brighter.

688 It makes learning leave the classroom, and be accessible 24/7 at home, or where ever else. It makes it fun and interactive, without just reading through books for hours. And if I do want to read textbooks, I can carry hundreds around in one hand held device. I can also receive emails without needing to be at a computer making communications with lecturers easier and quicker.

729 Without it I would not be able to effectively complete my studies. I am a part-time student working 20hrs a week and unless I had access to the internet and other technology in the middle of the night I would be at a disadvantage.

749 I work full time with 2 children and it allows me access to the university when I have the time to learn and study.

789 I like having the ability to access a wealth of information outside the campus library and being able to source material from the world wide web. The use of blogs, wikis, social networks and multimedia features also builds web 2.0 and new media skills which are important for modern careers.

823 It allows you to put pictures in your head, not just words, making it more interesting and enjoyable. You "want" to learn.

853 As a part time student who works full time and has children, I find it easier to access journal articles, receive feedback from lecturers and keep in contact with fellow students. I first studied with UUJ starting in 1997 and the difference in use of technology is amazing and I fully embrace it. The fact that I can access information online through the portal makes such a difference to my learning experience and I really appreciate it.

1241 As a disabled student I have gained confidence and ability using Mac and Dragon Dictate, I am better able to work in a focused way when I am not in severe pain. Technology allows me to keep up to date with relevant news stories and articles of interest to my work and blogging.

1279 Using the kindle for example makes each book easier to read as you can adjust the size of the text and it also saves you from carrying lots of books to class thus it motivates you to bring the required books as your only carrying a small device. Blackboard also helps a lot as tutors put up their powerpoints which helps a lot if you miss something important they said from their powerpoint…

1410 It has increased the quality of my learning.

1426 It has enhanced my technological skills and has give me a greater university experience.

Q28. How Ulster can enhance your teaching and learning experience through the use of technology

Sample Learner Commentaries (Response Count 1,362) Page 1 of 3

5 Stop assuming that everyone has the same level of technology experience. Some lecturers are convinced everyone has internet and a laptop etc. For some this just isn't feasible. Basic technology classes should be taught so everyone has an equal chance of keeping up with technology based work.

10 As mentioned previously, the computer situation in Magee needs serious revision and improvement. Better quality computers with a better quality internet browser (I suggest Firefox) will improve student satisfaction and will massively reduce student stress levels.

21 I would like to have video tutorials and webcam for every lecture or if that effects student attendance I would like to have podcast's of every lecture. And I think we need more ebooks in library. I think library on-line catalogue needs updated.

33 By asking students what type of technology they would prefer to use and integrating that technology into the course.

49 Encourage instructors to post more multi-media files. Even links to existing videos, interactive FLASH files, and audio files online that meet their approval.

64 By giving us helpful websites etc. to use to aid our work in addition to books. Maybe a few workshops on how to use the various technologies.

66 Providing a better range of computers for the students to use, as I feel that there is not enough facilities for all the students.

67 Supply good electrical points throughout university for laptops, including desks and seating.

77 1) Give the tutors more time and assistance in developing material which is appropriate for Blackboard. 2) Retrieval of printed material from the library needs to be easier for distance learners. We need more ebooks and a quicker/easier scanning/emailing service. 3) The library electronic databases are clunky and often UU's subscription does not pay for the papers that I want to read.

82 Making the websites more minimal and clutter free. Bulky E-Mail program could be improved. Better support and an integrated Smartphone App with Blackboard and Uni email would be extremely handy. A SMS text reminder for timetables and class starts would also be useful.

101 I feel that the university has already got the balance right with this and feel that this area does not need to be improved. It cannot be underestimated how useful and important face-to-face contact is for positive learning.

104 Maybe proposing good and convenient offer to buy laptops or even sharing or lending laptops for research and study purpose. Some universities do it, for example for preparing final project or for students Mac users sometimes obliged to work at the uni with a PC software.

113 Get more instructors/profs to actually use technology to communicate with their students!

125 Bring back WEBCT!!!

129 Continue to offer support with technology, keeping me interested with tools that will speed up my learning and also keep me wanting to come and learn more.

130 Creating a bigger learning material portfolio that could be shared between students. Virtual library resources should be enhanced.

131 Fix their TCP/IP settings for their email system, so smartphones can have access to emails rather than taking forever to log on to a computer i.e. Time effective! Vlogs and constantly updated blogs from lecturers i.e. Vlogs that include recordings of lectures as most universities provide this at the minute.

134 The computer-rooms are mainly equipped for no wheelchair user (tables to low no touchscreen or mousepads). It would help to have a height adjustable table or keyboards who have a touch mousepad or screen.

136 By stating exactly what types of technology are going to be used in the course prior to commencement, what softwares packages, browsers and systems students need, and what level of technological expertise you require to undertake the course without undue stress and confusion.

141 I have found the use of podcasts a very positive learning element when available...I would strongly encourage all those who teach to produce podcasts of lectures for distance learners. I find the podcast elevates the quality of material to a new level...makes us at a distance feel a little closer too!

151 More interactive learning within the lecture hall. - Easier access to the journals and past papers on the library website. -Perhaps video conferencing for placement student with their course director or other lectures if need be. - Just to generally keep up with technology to keep student awake in BORING oral LECTURES.

164 Use more visual methods of technology. Improve how lectures use Blackboard Learn to help students find work easier. Find an effective way of getting more feedback to students although this can be difficult as lectures don't always have the time required.

166 Honesty I don’t think it can do much more maybe to research into getting technology that you could get cheaper for those students underprivileged, to help them keep up with levels of technology with their class members (e.g. drawing pads, laptops and software) I have heard there is something to get software for students but it doesn’t seem to be well known around uni.173 Stop charging for printing materials downloaded using technology.

177 Use interactive whiteboards and other tools at the lecturers disposal instead of "death by powerpoint".179 They’re doing great work so far. Portal is a great system especially when you look at how well the other systems are integrated into it (email, blackboard etc). More podcasts/videos of lecturers could be beneficial so they can be reviewed again by students in the future.185 Expand the wireless infrastructure within the University offering wireless access in all areas.186 I think it is important to provide face to face training if new technology is being introduced. Not all students will require it but it makes it easier for the students who don't have the skills to access it. Availing of the technology has enhanced my learning experience at UUJ.192 Adapt to using YouTube for extra notes or lectures. More tests on Blackboard, to ensure we are learning throughout the year A forum, to let students and lecturers discuss problems and solutions, where others can benefit from the answers.196 Blackboard has been a great help as the powerpoint from the classes are uploaded and if there is anymore information the Lecturer can provide they will through Blackboard.215 It would be a good idea to perhaps introduce a tech union - where students could meet with each other if they were having issues using software such as photoshop or adobe illustrator.220 Embrace blackboard to its full potential by using features such as discussion boards, which may encourage less vocal people to give opinions and strike up academic debate.231 Offer students more choice in the types of technology available. For example notes could be offered in files which can be easily transferred to iPods, smartphones or devices such as Kindles. Mediums such as podcasts could be utilised to provide lectures for students who are unable to attend a class.234 By improving the Wi-Fi connection in the Belfast campus. It's appalling.235 Use tutorial videos for EVERY relevant module. For example all modules where maths is used and equations are needed to solve problems.241 By keeping up to date with new technology and incorporating it in classes more effectively.

247 Greater adoption by more lecturers. Only a handful make great use of the services available.

251 I think Skype and video conferencing would be useful especially during placements.

252 Make participation of online discussion forums mandatory. Do not use technology as the sole method of engaging students.

287 I cannot think of any improvements, it has an excellent technological environment.

303 It does a great job however the Facebook group which my class are in was created by us for us. University could perhaps set up a social network site for students in similar fields which would enhance support networks.

312 Tell teachers to use Blackboard Learn more often, some teachers I have don't even bother using it at all. It is a good method for putting lectures and files up for the students to get access to.

316 I would like textbooks available as audiobooks; and more textbooks available as E-books.

333 Urge every lecturer to use a variety of technology.

339 The TurningPoint handsets encourage attention in lectures. If these were actually used by more lecturers I think students would benefit.

343 I really like the idea of the lecturers contacting me through SMS it would always ensure I am kept up to date with information which is needed.

344 Older lecturers still use acetates in their lectures, this is very unprofessional as they should be moving on with the university and with technology, as it wastes time in class when they write things on it in the middle of the lecture. If we could get to our lecturers online through a chatting system instead of email it would be better in cases of emergencies.

345 I'm still not that confident about how I use online technology, and would appreciate a check-list of what is essential and what is just suggested. There are so many different components - alerts, tools, calendars, wiki pages, discussion boards, calendars, task lists, announcements....It's very overwhelming and I sometimes don't know where to look for what's the most important information, or what is actual crucial. I worry that I might not notice something, as I don't know to click on a certain section. It's not always that intuitive to use.

351 By keeping up to date with new and emerging technology and by making this available to me.

363 Tutors have to use the tools available. Some are conspicuous by their absence online. Not one single discussion thread in a whole module of online learning!

377 They can keep up to date with the technology and make us more aware of it and the advantages and disadvantages. With these in mind it will give us a better idea of what is out there for use to use.

411 Ulster Business School already does an excellent job of incorporating technology into everyday teaching. My only suggestion would be a more clearly laid out portal, as often it is difficult to find links e.g. Exam results and timetables. Perhaps a UUJ app could enhance learning experience.

422 Further promotion of IT as well courses aimed at more advanced levels of IT knowledge and skills.

Page 29: adl.ulster.ac.ukadl.ulster.ac.uk/public/docs/...13LearningWithTechnology…  · Web viewPaper No: ETSC/12/13Agenda Item:9 (ii)Status: GREEN. UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER. EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES

436 Embrace and support the influx of modern technologies such as tablets and smartphones, through applications and mobile friendly web services. More interactive teaching techniques.442 I feel as though Blackboard has untapped resources- never have I experienced feedback on an assignment through Blackboard or a mark in the grades section.453 With proper classes that TEACH you how to use programs properly, such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Also with regular workshops on how to use all of the facilities available in the University - like the elusive laser cutter or the photography labs.460 The use of Blackboard is fantastic. If more staff were able to use this technology it would mean that my whole course would be available in one online area.469 Maintain a quiet and respectful environment in the LRC computer room is most important and most importantly try and monitor students usage of the computers as when all the computers are taken it is unfair for someone to wait to do actual work whilst others are using Facebook!480 Give incentives for others to use Blackboard (only about 1/5 of my course was interacting). Have more timely tutor feedback and engagement on blackboard.516 Students use technology all the time, but I find the lecturers don't make as good use of it. They take too long to respond and put things online for us. There should be something created that's 'lecture friendly', and maybe they will use it better.523 Ensuring BBL is working effectively and considering alternative means of teaching like podcasts/YouTube recordings for lectures rather than just voice over.529 I can’t see how anything further could be done. All sources are being used, everything from Twitter to YouTube to Blackboard. Perhaps more podcasts, I find them a great way to learn on the go.541 Establish WiFi connectivity within the student housing complexes.542 Maybe provide an introduction module to the technology they use once you have enrolled on your course549 Provide tablets or tablet purchasing scheme so they can be used in all classes. Tablets would reduce the need of printing and therefore be more effective in reducing the need for excess printing, in one class alone I would need to print at least 500 pages for the noted alone, never mind tutorials or assignments!564 System for finding journal articles could be better570 I think if the University of Ulster just keeps doing what they are doing with regards to the enhancement of technology that every student will reap the benefits.583 Make all the systems a lot more user friendly. Perhaps create an app for the portal. Some very useful information is hidden away and difficult to find. I use the library link quite often to find British Standards, but I would bet a lot of others in my class would know the uni has a partnership to have access to these standards. These services should be a lot clearer.

586 I think that Blackboard VLE has all what it takes to enhance any teaching experiences it needs only to be more exploited within the technology it offers.592 If the university provided the Belfast campus with more printers and kept them maintained more regularly it would benefit all students as colour images are integral to art and design disciplines, more online journals would also be useful.621 By getting the English department to actually use it.631 By using more relevant methods to students, e.g. Smartphones642 Revise Blackboard so students can print, cut, copy, and paste from it; the way students could do on WebCT.656 It should be used more by staff as a mean of contact to the students. It must be remembered that the university network does not just consist of emails.668 I feel that the University has already provided me with the capability to do this. The ease of use of technology such as Blackboard Learn or My library for example helps enhance my learning experience.672 For PT/PG students it needs to be explored and used more. I understand the different preferences of lecturers, but it would be useful for collaborative learning.681 Blackboard VLE seems not to be being fully utilised, possibly because not all teaching staff are embracing it in the same way. A specific example is that some course results are posted in Blackboard but others are emailed. It would be better to have a consistent use of available resources by all teaching staff.763 It would be useful to ensure mature part-time learners have education on technology and making use of what is available for learning.773 By using more social medias such as Twitter to put out information, and using wikis and YouTube mediums.807 Gather a class decision on what technology they would like to use to help their learning.894 The lack of working computers in the Library means your not always guaranteed a free computer even around quiet times of the year. Also the lack of printers means you cannot rely that you will get something printed in uni for a submission.920 Some lecturers are wonderful at updating Blackboard, others are not. A continuity across modules would be preferable. An ability to access key texts online that have been scanned in has been invaluable this year so more of that, if possible. Also, having lecturers link to random sites and texts that are of interest has been really beneficial too.944 I think Ulster should set up there own type of 'Facebook' what I mean by this is a more informal social network where learners can discuss and share ideas. The forums in my opinion are not working. Also why not allow cross class discussion on this platform and allow other students from other course to chat if the assignment or lecture is relevant to them as well. A type of relaxed, social platform for all Ulster students but that will be collaborative and conducive to learning.
