Note: Theferritepolepiecesintheinductivepickup are fragile and may bedamagedifthejawsareallowedto"snap"closedorifthepickupitselfisdropped.

4. Withtheenginestopped,cleananydirtfromthetimingmarks.Figure3showsseveral typical timing marks and therotationoftheengine.

5. Settheengineidlespeedaccordingtotheservicemanualusingatachometer.

6. Ifthedistributorhasbreakerpoints,setthedwellangleaccording to theservicemanualbeforecheckingenginetiming.(WhenusinganMSDIgnition,thedwellsettingisnotcritical.)

CHECKING THE ENGINE TIMING

Caution: Whentimingtheengine,beverycarefulnottolettheTimingLightcablesgettangledintheengine'scoolingfan.

1. Starttheengineandletitwarmuptooperatingtemperature.

2. With the engine idling at the recommendedrpm,aimtheTimingLightatthetimingmarksand press the trigger switch to operate thelight.Theenginetimingshouldbethesameasrecommendedintheservicemanual.Ifnot,seethenextsectiononadjustingthetiming.

ADJUSTING THE ENGINE TIMING

STANDARD POINTS OR ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTORS1. Stoptheengine.Loosenthedistributorhold-downclampuntilthedistributorisjustlooseenough

toturnbyhand.2. Restarttheengine.UsingtheTiminglight,rotatethedistributoruntilthetimingmarkslineup.Stop

theengineandsecurelytightenthedistributorhold-downclamp.3. Restarttheengineandrecheckthetiming.Ifthetimingneedsfurtheradjustment,repeat.

CRANK TRIGGER SYSTEMS1. Stoptheengine.Loosenthetimingpickupandadjustitinthebracket,dependingonwhether

youwanttoadvanceorretardthetiming.Tightenthepickup.

Caution: Donotattempttomovethepickupwhiletheengineisrunning.Personalinjuryordamagetothetimingpickupcouldresult.

2. Restarttheengineandrecheckthetiming.Ifthetimingneedsfurtheradjustment,repeatstep.

TIMING TIPS• Inmanyracingapplications,thetimingshouldbecheckedatahigherrpmtoverifytotaladvance.

Inthiscase,anewmarkmustbemadeontheharmonicbalancerrepresentingyourdesiredtotaladvance(i.e.BTDC).Thiscanbedoneusingatimingtapeoradegreewheel.Afteryou'vemadethemark,starttheengineandincreasetherpmhighenoughtowhereallthemechanicaladvanceisin.Whenyournewmarklinesupwiththetimingmarks,youareatyourselectedtotaltiming.

•Makesurethepowerclipsaresecurelyattachedtothebatteryoralternator.Donotconnectthesetothecoil.

• KeeptheTimingLightspowercablesawayfromallthesparkplugwires.• Makesure thenumber1cylinderwire iswell separated from theothersparkplugwires.This

minimizesthechanceforstraysignalscausinginaccuratereadings.• Makesurethewirestotheinductivepickupdonotpassnearanysparkplugwires.Again,thiswill

helppreventfalsetriggeringofthelight.• Keepthepolepiecescleanbywipingthemwithacloth.Donotscrapeorfilethepolepieces.To

insureaccuratereadings,makesurethenumber1wireiswidelyseparatedfromtheothersparkplugwires.

• Alwaysusethesametiminglightwhentuning.Thiswillkeepyourtimingsettingsconsistent.
