Adjustment of claims - process of ascertaining the liability of the insurer and the amount or indemnity which the insured is entitled.

Kinds of adjusters

1. Agents

*in property insurance - many have the authority to settle a claim immediately.

*in life insurance - often involved directly in loss payment, do not have the problem of determining the extent of loss payment

2. Staff or company adjusters - salaried employees of an insurance company

3. Independent adjusters - experts who made loss-adjusting a business, works for the insurers who request their services

4. Adjustment bureaus - separate corporations
