by Sandra Bell KirchmanSteeped in history, the

New Stockholm LutheranChurch (NSLC) and itsforerunners have been abeacon for the Lutheranfaithful in the area forover a century. BeforeSaskatchewan evenbecame a province,Lutherans in the Swedishcolony of New Stockholmwere meeting. The datewas Oct. 3, 1889, and theplace was the home of E.Hammarstrom. Thatmeeting produced the firstSwedish Augustana con-gregation; the constitutionwas adopted on Nov. 30 ofthat year. The newly

formed SwedishEvangelical LutheranNew StockholmCongregation then peti-tioned to become a mem-ber of the MinnesotaConference of theAugustana EvangelicalSynod, being part of theSwedish Lutheran Churchin North America.

On a 40-acre grant fromthe government in 1891,the congregation beganbuilding a church, whichwas dedicated on July 26,1896. The congregationhad no regular pastoruntil 1903, when Rev. N.Lehart of Minnesotaaccepted a call to be thefirst resident pastor in

New Stockholm. He waswelcomed in the mainaddress by Presbyterianminister Rev. HughMcKay from the IndianMission at Round Lake, who predicted theLutheran church wouldhave a great future.

“In 1906, a parsonagewas built on the churchgrounds, and except foralterations, this buildingstill stands today.” (90thAnniversary HistoricalPamphlet) It was used bythe succeeding pastorsuntil 1958 when the pas-tor moved to Whitewood. It was rented out afterthat.

Rev. P.A. Edquist, pastor

from 1908 to 1914, playeda significant role in theforming of the LutheranCanada Conference, whichultimately was organizedin the NSLC in May of1913. This resulted in thecreation of the EvangelicalLutheran Church ofCanada. Pastor Edquistalso was instrumental inthe construction of thenew church building.

During the ministry ofRev. O.E. Olmon, between1915 and 1919, CarlLarson of Esterhazyaccepted the tender for thebuilding of the newchurch, with blueprintsobtained from the U.S.The striking gothic style

and brick work of thechurch made it uniqueamongst prairie churches, with two beautiful stainedglass windows beautifyingthe finished building. Itwas dedicated on May 22,1921.

Over the years, thechurch was completed andenhanced inside bit by bit.The congregation expand-ed and the influence of theNSLC grew in the area. Then the church was hardhit, like the rest of theworld, during the depres-sion of the ’30s and, for atime and during theSecond World War, thecongregation was hardpressed to stay afloat

financially. It managed, however, and emerged onthe other side with expan-sion and hope.

The first Canadian-bornpastor was Alf Sander, who served the congrega-tion from 1953 to 1958.During that year, the con-gregation entered withBroadview and Dubuc intoa new parish.

The following yearmarked the 70th anniver-sary of the New Stockholmcongregation, an impor-tant one, since it was thelast celebration attendedby pioneer members of thecongregation.

When the congregationat Dubuc was transferredfrom the CanadaConference in 1960 to theAmerican LutheranChurch, a UnitedLutheran Church pastor,George Koski, servedthree congregations atNew Finland, Broadviewand Stockholm under theparish name of ParklandTrinity. After PastorKoski resigned, a succes-sion of pastors and theirfamilies met the needs ofthe congregation. The90th anniversary was cele-brated in style with athree-day event, whichwas attended by George

Nelson, one of the childrenlisted among the chartermembers in 1889.

A realignment of parish-es was effected in 1985,with New Finland joiningWapella, leaving NewStockholm and Broadvieworganizing into what wasknown as Qu’AppelleValley Lutheran Parish. When Pastor Paul Morckresigned at NewStockholm at the end ofMay, 1989, a new parishalignment was required, and New Stockholm joinedwith Redeemer LutheranChurch of Esterhazy toform the Cross and SpireParish.

The New StockholmLutheran Church cele-brated its 100th year ofexistence in 1989 underthe guidance of Rev. VirgilLundquist, signaling acentury of struggle to getestablished, weatheringgood years and bad, afflu-ence and meager means. The original struggle toobtain pastors to serve thecongregation was huge. Atone time there was onepastor situated inWinnipeg for the whole ofCanada. All the rest of thepastors travelled fromMinnesota.

Today, the congregationsof both NSLC andEsterhazy RedeemerLutheran Church areserved by Rev. Lori James,

who arrived in Esterhazyfresh from the seminary asa bride with her new hus-band, Darryl James. Sinceshe answered the call inAugust, 2006, two majorevents in her life haveoccurred. One was herordination, which occurredat the NSLC on Aug. 6,2006. The other was thebirth of their daughter,Sarah Grace, on Nov. 5,2007.

Pastor Lori is delightedwith her charges. “For me,I enjoy both of the congre-gations and my work withthem,” she said. “It is diffi-cult to get a chance tomake all of the visitsbecause there are so manypeople, and such a largearea, but somehow we

have been making it work.I rely on people in each ofthe congregations to helpme out because at theheart of it, we are all to bein ministry together. Ihave my roles and expec-tations but I am not in thisalone. The people in thecongregations are alsowith me, helping me toserve. This is what makesit work.

“The cooperationamongst the clergy andthe congregations inEsterhazy. It is phenome-nal and I’m honoured to bea part of that.”
