I hope everyone survived the Holiday Season and have your Corvettes neatly tucked in for a winter’s nap. We’ve had a very interesting year with holding 2 judging meets, preparing for next year’s Adirondack Regional, many members attending the National Convention, having a well-attended Road Tour to Hunter Mountain along with our many monthly meetings and other events. Speaking of the National Convention, in the last newsletter I mentioned those members who achieved awards there. I inadvertently neglected to mention that Bob Connelly also achieved the coveted Duntov Award there and Rob Rohloff achieved his level 200 Master Judges hat. See the photos further on in the newsletter. Congratulations to Bob and Rob, please accept my apologies for the oversight. Preparations for the Regional are moving along nicely. As of this writing we have about 15 cars registered and about 40 family registrations. Please register early and consider volunteering as we need many hands to make sure we are successful. Of note, we need many people to man the daytime security stations both at The Desmond and Afrim’s. I have a schedule made with the times that need to be filled. Our chapter needs to man The Desmond Thursday from 6am to 6pm, Afrim’s on Friday from 6am to 6pm and again at the Desmond on Saturday from 6 am to 6pm. Please call or email me to volunteer for 2 hour stints during these times. Also, Bill Schroeder will need volunteers to help with ‘day of event’ ticket and shirt sales table. Rob Rohloff of the Northeast Chapter may need people to help with the Registration Desk. Online Registration is open so please register as soon as you can. On January 5 th we will have our Annual Dinner at Scarborough’s which we have about 26 people attending. This is always a good event and this year should be no different. The 2020 schedule is available on the website and please plan on attending as many events as possible. Lief Larsen

Fourth Quarter 2019

12-18-19

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

On January 5th we will have our Annual Dinner at Scarborough’s which we have about 26 people attending. This is always a good event and this year should be no different. The 2020 schedule is available on the website and please plan on attending as many events as possible. Lief Larsen

Happy New year to all. This is certainly a new one for our chapter as we venture into hosting a regional event. While the typical winter Corvette tasks are still at hand, a great deal of time and effort is being put into the preparations for our biggest event ever! The show of hands for volunteers has been a tad quiet. As such, those that offered a blanket “I’ll help” will be plugged into the roster as needs arise. Good thing chairman Lief is semi-retired….we may overload him with this event. I’m getting the tools and plans arranged for the judging end of things. Lief and I met with a Security officer that I located. He’s a Police officer and will be covering the security needs at both sites along with other officer(s). The logo is done and the first of the Polo shirts are in hand….again, thank you Lief. As predicted, the registrations are picking up now that the holidays are behind us. Interest amongst our members is building as well. Some of our members have registered cars for judging with more to come. Joe and Sunday Verillo have offered to fill some of the massive indoor space we have with a plethora of goodies. At the Holiday party he mentioned to me chassis, half built, cars, completed resto mods, restored cars and so many things I can’t remember, but so much stuff that he plans to bring in help to get it all to the event. Joe is also considering a significant advertising campaign to promote the event. Thank Joe and Sunday when you see them for the massive support. Mark your calendar for Saturday February 8th, 10AM. Judging school and tech session in my garage. We’ll be doing C5 judging to sharpen our skills on that rarely seen generation on the judging field. I’ll have some other tech goodies to play with while we’re at it. Please RSVP for this event. That’s all for now. Think spring and see you all soon!

Sometimes you just need to vent Here’s a small tip for thermostat installation. Drill a tiny hole in the flange. Upon filling the system, by design you are filling the block through the water pump and into the bottom of the block. Without a place for the air to go, it can take a while to work the air lock out. This tiny hole doesn’t affect performance of the thermostat and saves some aggravation. You’ll find many over the counter thermostats with a hole or tiny opening in the sealing flange right from the get go…. hence this idea is not new.

Mesh Trap

If you come to need a rebuild on your Muncie 4-speed, there’s a gotcha to look out for. Muncie made a small change in 1965. Sounds simple enough at first, but hang with me a bit. Up to 1965, the gear selector hub was 1.160” wide, then it shrank to 1.030”.

Along with this change, the sychromesh rings changed width commensurate. The rub comes if the transmission had ever been serviced before or is not original to the car. One can easily switch from wide to narrow or vice versa. If paired with the correct synchromesh rings, it’ll function perfectly. As a matter of fact, one of our noteworthy members had one of each in his original transmission upon rebuild a few years ago. Look closely at the rings side by side. You’ll notice a small difference.

The useful part of this story comes by simply opening the side cover of your transmission before ordering a kit. You can see if the rings are “wide” or “narrow”. These are narrow used with the wider hub. This is Tony Annese’s ’63 transmission. It had never been opened before. So pop the cover and take a peak before you order….then cover that stinky gear case until the parts come in!

Hello to all, hard to believe that another year has passed, and a busy one at that. Looks like another busy year with our Regional it is just four and a half months away. Anne and I will be leaving for Florida shortly and will make a stop for the Mecum Auction for a couple of days the off to Naples for about a week to spend some time with friends. I will be attending the Florida Regional in February, then back to sunny Key West until we leave on a cruise. If anyone needs anything, please call me on my cell and I will get a post out to all members if need be. Hope to see everyone at the Adirondack/Northeast Chapters Regional in May. Until then - everyone have a great New Year, and be safe. Below is our Schedule for 2020.
