Recent example of innovation is the LOCTITE® Multicore HF 212 halogen and lead-free solder paste. Today’s electronics assembly manufacturers want comprehensive solutions – materials that can deliver on multiple fronts. This latest solder material from Henkel provides the processability, reliability, performance and application flexibility required, all within a robust halogen-free formula that meets demanding market expectations.
Close monitoring of mega trends helps to identify new areas for improvements to existing technologies and for disruptive innovations that can transform an entire value chain and create completely new markets. Adhesive Technologies continually reviews its portfolio to make sure innovation drives growth in the future – as it has in the past. This process determines where the company will invest and leads to continuous improvements and refinements.
Adhesive Technologies uses an “open innovation” approach to generate new business opportunities. This approach is a systematic exploration and collaboration with external parties such as academic institutions, existing customers and suppliers. It involves partnerships and collaboration with an increasing number of centers for entrepreneurship and start-ups.
A global network of product development facilities and advanced research centers ensures proximity to our customers. Proposed solutions can be simulated and trialed on our equipment before even reaching customers’ production lines. Innovation Centers (Shanghai, China; Seoul, South Korea; Pune, India) that serve as centers of excellence with specific technical expertise have been set up within regional hubs.

Sustainability drives innovation
Henkel partners with its customers to optimize their specific processes and generate manufacturing efficiencies. In the packaging industry, our strategic partnership with Nordson Corporation – a leading manufacturer of adhesive dispensing equipment – has led to the development of machinery that uses a Henkel adhesive tailored specifically for this equipment. Customers benefit from a lower consumption of adhesive and from reduced energy costs.
The new generation of low temperature hot melt adhesives for packaging is another advance. TECHNOMELT Supra Cool 100 can reduce energy use by up to 50 percent because it has a lower application temperature than conventional hot melts.
In the field of transportation, Henkel helps automotive OEMs meet increasing regulatory requirements to reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel consumption. Increasing use of lightweight construction technologies has therefore become indispensable as the reduction of vehicle weight becomes unavoidable. Henkel’s LOCTITE® MAX 3 – a new family of matrix resins based on polyurethane used for fiber reinforced parts in auto body manufacture – enables lighter vehicles, increased strength and more innovative design.
In the area of building technology, we offer multi-layer thermal insulation systems for insulating all types of building exteriors. CERESIT products are mutually compatible and lower building energy use – and our customers’ energy costs – by up to 50 percent. Mutual compatibility of the products ensures easy application and facilitates modern design, together with long life and high performance.
We have defined a long-term ambition to improve the relation between the value we create to our footprint by a factor of 3 in the next 20 years, making Henkel three times more efficient by 2030.
This approach has been recognized in the numerous awards won and listings achieved: Inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index for the past twelve years; leader in our sector in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for six years in a row, and named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies five consecutive times.

revolution through Automation in shoe industry
Shoe manufacturing is a typically labor-intensive industry: Producing one million pairs of shoes per month requires 15,000 workers. As labor costs rise, especially in developing Asian countries, major shoe brands are experiencing the need to tightly control their production costs while at the same time meeting higher standards for sustainable production. At this critical time for the global shoe industry, Henkel’s experts, with the goal of “Revolution through Automation”, have worked together with equipment suppliers and launched new sustainable adhesive technologies for the shoe industry that makes it possible to automate shoe manufacturing processes.
Adhesives make modern packaging possible
Packaging has to fulfil many tasks: Information, segmentation, protection and preservation. Food needs to be kept fresh, tasty and safe. Today light and flexible packaging consists of several layers of plastic film, aluminum foil or paper. Special adhesives are necessary for laminating these layers to achieve the desired properties of the packaging. Precision performance adhesives that meet the design requirement for branded packaging enable high-speed manufacturing processes in the packaging industry. Food contact legislation sets strict regulations to ensure all food that enters the market is safe for human health. This requires sustainable packaging solutions that meet the highest standards for food safe packaging. At Henkel, we offer our customers and consumers a winning combination of high-performance adhesive
solutions and extensive food safety expertise that improve safety and quality.
clean solutions for staying comfortable
A few grams of adhesive can transform a piece of thin tissue paper into a highly functional product such as a kitchen roll or napkins. In fact, several disposable hygiene finished goods rely on our solutions in the field of feminine care, diapers and adult incontinence. The ingredients of the adhesives have to be selected very carefully to avoid skin irritation. At the same time, they must meet and exceed the high-quality requirements for dryness, comfort and hygiene. Henkel’s sustainable and innovative adhesive solutions guarantee optimal bonding for tissue and hygiene applications, which typically involve very high-speed machinery.
