Our in-house tape printing team in the Midlands has many years experience in converting and printing packaging tapes. Tape, printed with a logo or message, is an effective way to advertise and promote your brand, give information about the handling of your product, or to differentiate items and shipments. Originally printing on vinyl tape, Kilby Packaging was one of the first companies in the UK to produce high quality print on polypropylene tape. More recently continued investment in plant, people and processes has lead to the introduction of printing on self-adhesive paper tape. This is a product which has grown in popularity due to the widespread desire for environmentally friendly materials.

Choosing a Packaging Tape

Adhesive packaging tapes are stocked in a choice of different base materials, types of adhesives, colours and sizes. We can help you find the ideal tape for you;

VinylThe finest quality packaging tape is Vinyl (PVC) which is a thick film with a very effective solvent adhesive. It has a matt finish and pulls slowly and quietly off the roll. Vinyl can be torn by hand or used with a dispenser and is ideal for sealing boxes containing medium to heavy loads.

Low Noise Polypropylene tapeLow noise polypropylene tape is treated so the tape is quiet on unwinding and is therefore popular in busy packaging areas. This tape has a glossy finish and is best applied with a dispenser. Low noise polypropylene tape can be supplied with solvent or acrylic adhesives.

Polypropylene Packaging TapeThis is the most popular packaging tape for everyday box sealing. It has a gloss finish and releases quickly off the roll. Polypropylene tape is available with solvent, hot melt or acrylic adhesive to suit different applications.

PaperSelf-adhesive paper tape has become a popular choice for people looking for more environmentally friendly packaging products. It is available as a standard or low noise with hot melt or solvent adhesive.

Choosing the right adhesive

SolventThe finest quality adhesive is solvent which is made of natural rubber and resins. It has the best long term adhesion and has the best performance in cold conditions.

Hot MeltThis is a good quality adhesive which is made of synthetic rubbers and resins. It has a firm initial grab and a long term tack, suitable for a variety of different surfaces including boxes made of a high degree of recycled fibre.

AcrylicAcrylic adhesive is popular for many general packaging applications. Economy packaging tapes with acrylic adhesives can be more sensitive to colder temperatures.

This is a popular range of packaging tapes which unwind quickly off the roll when pulled by hand and are best applied using a tape dispenser. Premier Polypropylene Tape A high quality solvent adhesive makes this the highest grade quick release polypropylene tape. Solvent adhesive is made of natural rubber and resins and has the best long term bond and performance in cold conditions when compared to other adhesives.

Low noise polypropylene tape is a more economical packaging tape than vinyl, but shares the characteristic of pulling quietly off the roll. Choose from Solvent or Acrylic Adhesive.

Premier Low Noise PolypropyleneThis is a superb high quality packaging tape which is often mistaken for vinyl tape because of its thick film, good quality solvent adhesive and the way it pulls slowly off the roll. The adhesive adheres well to a variety of surfaces and resists changes to temperature. The only practical difference from vinyl tape is it cannot be torn by hand.

Standard Polypropylene Low NoiseWith standard film thickness and acrylic adhesive, this is a popular low noise tape. It is not recommended for use in refrigerated areas due to the nature of the adhesive but does perform well in the more usual packing environments.

Economy Polypropylene TapeFor the most cost effective packaging tape solution, choose our economy, quick release polypropylene tape. It has an acrylic adhesive which is considered more environmentally friendly as it does not contain organic solvents. Unless the acrylic adhesive is specified as ‘heavy duty grade’, it is not recommended for cold packing environments.

Paper Packaging Tape

Self-adhesive paper tapes offer a smart and environmentally friendly way to seal a box . Paper has one of the best environmental credentials due to the sustainability of its raw material which is both renewable and recyclable. Unlike gummed paper tapes which require a special dispenser to apply water to activate the adhesive, self-adhesive paper tapes are ready to apply and make them ideal for case sealing. They blend well with brown corrugated cases and after use the tape can be recycled along with the box.

Machine Applied Packaging Tape

Machine applied packaging tapes are used in automated packing lines, ensuring efficient sealing of cases and significantly improving packing times. The Printing ProcessThe printing process is flexographic, the tape is printed as it moves in direct contact with a flexible plate. Flexographic is a versatile printing process with low origination costs and gives good results on this difficult printing surface.

Bespoke Printed Tape

Kilby Packaging Printed Tape DivisionThirty years of printing experience has given Kilby Packaging a reputation for high quality print on a variety of tapes. Originally printing on vinyl tape, Kilby Packaging was one of the first companies in the UK to introduce high quality print on polypropylene tape. More recently, printed self-adhesive paper tape and masking tape has been introduced.

On-going investment in new machinery has ensured that large volume orders can be produced within short production times. Demand also remains high for smaller runs and the minimum order quantity is just 45 rolls.

When tape is printed with a logo it enforces your brand and advertises your company. Striking effects can be achieved with tape printed in up to three colours on white or transparent tape. This tape will enhance product presentation and add value.

Printed tape is popular for differentiating goods, making it easy for a product line to be identified at a glance. Simple text, designs and colours are used to increase efficiencies in picking, packing and distribution.

A box or package sealed with bespoke printed tape is less likely to be opened before it reaches its destination, thereby improving security of goods and reducing pilferage.

Printed tape can be used to give clear instructions such as ‘Handle with Care,’ when shipping delicate or heavy goods or may be printed with a bar code for product scanning. Warning and Information tape saves time when packing and is more cost effective than using labels.

Printed tape can also be used for highlighting promotional offers, avoiding the need for specially printed boxes.

Positive print is most commonly used, whereby the design is raised on the stereo and forms an impression on the tape. This is the technique used to print tapes such as ’Fragile’ where the red text is printed onto white tape. Alternatively a reverse block can be used; the text remains unprinted and the outline is flooded in a contrasting colour.

Up to three colours can be printed on polypropylene and vinyl tape, in solid colours or tints (tones). A wide selection of ink colours are kept in stock or alternatively you can request a bespoke colour to order. We are happy to arrange a visit to our production facility in the Midlands to see our printing capabilities and to assist you with your design ideas.

4. Choose Tape Colour;

White or transparent tape is most commonly used to print upon. White gives good impact but transparent tape is effective in making your logo stand out on brown and white boxes. We also print on red, yellow and green vinyl tape. Alternatively white tape can be flood printed in a colour of your choice.

5. Choose Ink Colours;

Select up to three colours of ink from the range shown in the table below for vinyl and polypropylene printed tape. It is also possible to have tints of these colours. We are able to source non-standard colours or match to a specific pantone reference on request.

Paper tapes use water based inks which are more ecological and give good results in flexographic printing. You can select one colour for paper tape with a design using a recommended maximum of 30% ink coverage

Customising Your Tape

3. Choose a Design;

Kilby Packaging can help you with your design ideas, including layout and recommended fonts. We can prepare your artwork, selecting the best repeat size to suit your design.

If you have a design prepared, the preferred formats are Adobe Illustrator, editable Pdf or Eps but we can work with other file types if required. Fonts should be turned to outlines or have the font supplied and any placed images should be a minimum of 300dpi and supplied separately or embedded in the file. Tints are produced at 50 lines per inch and have a tone range of 8% to 70%. The image can appear once or multiple times within the repeated space. The repeat size available for the image including spaces are 251mm, 295mm or 383mm.

Filament Tape - MonoWoven glass fibre filaments run along the length of the roll which gives this tape its high strength properties. Filament tape is moisture resistant and can be used for sealing and reinforcing cases or banding heavy consignments.

Strapping TapeThe mono-oriented polypropylene (MOPP) tape is an easy but effective way of banding and strapping. It has an orange, 72 micron film with a hot melt adhesive which gives it good strength and adhesive properties.

Filament Tape - Cross WeaveThis filament tape is stronger than the mono tape as the filaments run both along the length of the roll and also across the width. It can be used for similar applications to mono but where even greater strength is required.

Medium Duty Strapping TapePossessing high tensile strength but with low elongation, this is a heavier weight polypropylene strapping tape. It is very resistant to high and low temperatures and due to the black backing, is extremely resistant to UV-light. Main applications are bundling of copper, iron and plastic pipes, palletising and coil tabbing.

Economy Water Resistant Cloth TapeGeneral purpose cloth or duct tape is used for heavy duty box sealing, bundling, fixing and securing.

Heavy Duty Water Resistant Cloth Tape This polycoated cloth tape has a high level of water resistance and performs well to long term outdoor use. It has a gloss finish which can be written upon and is both easy to unwind and easy tear.

Applications include tabbing, holding and protection on automotive production lines; underlay and carpet edging and joining; sealing metal and plastic ducting.



High Performance Waterproof Cloth Tape A good quality, waterproof polyethylene coated cloth tape which has strong adhesion, even on rough surfaces and is easy to unwind. A maintenance and repair tape, it is ideal for a variety of uses such as overlapping construction films and polythene sheets, securing wires, cable harnessing and other fastening applications.





Acrylic Paste Coated Cloth Tape tesa® 4671 is a strong acrylic paste coated cloth tape. It has high adhesion on smooth or uneven surfaces, excellent tensile strength and is easy to remove without leaving a residue. The surface is less reflective and is easy to write on. It can be used to splice and join dance floors, as a write-on tape on mixer decks, stage marking, cable and pipe bundling, colour coding, temporary carpet fixing, masking and many other uses.

Uncoated Cotton Cloth Tape An uncoated cloth tape with a writable surface is fully biodegradable making it an environmentally responsible choice. Common applications are protection of iron works during road surfacing, masking off aircraft engine parts during manufacture and servicing, sealing of bandages and dressings on animals and strapping of sports equipment handles.

Strong Aluminium Tape This is a strong aluminium tape which is mainly used in the appliance industry but also for a wide range of other applications. Transparent Double Sided Polypropylene Tape Tesa® 51970 features an excellent combination of high tack and adhesion and gives a secure bond even on materials such as polythene and rough surfaces. It has good temperature resistance and is suitable for outdoors. Often used for mounting plastic and wooden trims, decorative materials and displays and transparent signs.

Tape SuitabilityThe performance of a packing tape is dependent upon its characteristics including the backing and adhesive. Other factors contributing to its effectiveness are; environmental conditions during application, storage and transportation; the board material quality of the box to be sealed; the weight and contents of the package. For further information see ‘Choosing the right tape for you’ on page 3 or talk to our customer service team.

Storage and Handling Packaging Materials, Equipment and Solutions

Adhesive tapes are best stored and applied in a clean environment. Tape should be stored ideally between 15-25oC, away from direct heat or light, and kept boxed on pallets or shelves.

The optimum temperature for use is 18-20oC. If tape is stored in a colder environment, it should be brought into the warmth before use.

When opening the box with a knife take care not to cut the rolls of tape inside. Damage to the roll edges either by a knife blade or as a result of roll being dropped, may cause the tape to tear when used. Avoid the tape splitting during application by using a tape dispenser and regularly replace the blade to ensure it stays clean and sharp.

Sealing Boxes

Standard Seal (U-closure)The tape adhesive will perform better if the surface is free from dust and dirt and if the dispenser is used to apply the correct pressure when sticking the tape firmly against the box or surface.

Unwind the tape firmly against the box allowing for an overlap of about 50mm to 70mm down the side of the box.For extra strength add tabs of tape either side of the U shape closure.

Heavier Seal (H-closure)If a stronger seal is required, the tape is applied first to seal the flaps and then along the width of the box at both ends to form a ‘H’ seal. Apply filament tape around the box for extreme handling.
