have to continue to show
their sense of responsibility
to community whether on a
local, state or national level.
The one hundred hours of
community service necessary
for Graduation is a great
base from which to continue
this realm of thoughtfulness.
All of these skill
sets are involved in a larger
philosophical discussion of
what is life all about. Many
authors reference life being a
quest for meaning. A quest
where someone does
something significant, where
someone cares for others
and someone who finds the
courage to make difficult
decisions.
Adelphi Academy
presents a myriad of
opportunities both inside
and outside the classroom. It
is the Academy’s hope that
the experiential situations
will assist out young
Adelphians in their character
development. As human
beings we cannot control
what happens to us, but
I recently attended a
p r o f e s s i o n a l
conference entitled;
Creating A New
Norm. The forum was
designed as a self help
approach for school leaders
to view their schools, and
determine how to envision a
pathway for graduates to
mee t th e ch a l l en ges
presented by colleges today.
In earlier articles, I
mentioned the five minds
needed for the future, as well
as other concerns that are
germane to the question. At
this juncture, it became
apparent that my thinking
would have to take on a
more generalized approach.
Students must be able to
demonstrate critical thinking
skills. These skills will have to
be viewed through problem
solving and sound reasoning.
The entire college application
process is a good example of
how to enable our graduates
to use critical thinking skills.
It is incumbent for the
Academy to show the Senior
class how to process the
myriad of paperwork and
publicity so as to get to the
basis of what the various
colleges offer and then to
decide which school is
acceptable for the candidate.
The senior now
selecting a college must show
a degree of maturity in the
exercise of his or her life skill
a s s o t o a c h i e v e
independence. The freshman
year at college level is a daily
test of one’s life skills. The
social, the emotional and the
academic environment that
our young Adelphians find
themselves in is a constant
endeavor that has to be
mastered.
Communication skills
are key for one’s success. The
Adelphian must be able to
communicate in a clear and
precise modality what his or
her thoughts are. The spoken
word as the written word has
to be carefully crafted.
Adelphians have to
demonstrate to their new
classmates their strength of
character and civility; they

hopefully we can demonstrate what can be done
by our young Adelphians when things happen to
them. Hurricane Sandy brought out very positive
community feelings on the part of our students.
Many of our students countered and are still

Its March Madness at Adelphi Academy as
playoffs begin for the the Junior Varsity and Varsity
Basketball teams. The Varsity team finished as a #6 seed
with a 3-7 league record despite battling injuries
throughout the year. On Thursday, February 28th, the
Panthers faced their first round opponent, #3 seed the
Hallen School. The visiting Panthers opened up the game
extremely slow and were trailing 20-10 at the conclusion
of the 2nd quarter. The Panthers chipped away at the lead
in the 2nd led by the strong play of Kaplan Cekiq who
caused all types of mismatch problems for Hallen. At the
half, the Panthers had cut the deficit to 32-25.
Adelphi continued their strong play in the 2nd half
and managed to keep the game within reach behind the
strong play of Martin Portnoy and Austin Wint who
combined for 34 points for the game. The Panthers
crawled back and managed to cut the lead to 2 at 49-47
with 1:53 to go in the game but a back breaking three-
pointer and a short jump shot by Hallen pushed the lead
up to 7. The final score was 55-48 in favor of Hallen who
move on to the semi-finals of the Metro League. The
Panthers showed plenty of heart and with all but one
player returning should be one of the league favorites for
next season.
The JV team finished the season with a 4-4 league
record and is now just steps away from the Metro League
championship game. They will face off against the
Stevenson School on Tuesday with the winner playing the
next day against the Legacy School for the chance to claim
a spot in the finals on Thursday. The Panthers split the
season series with Legacy and will be meeting for the first
with the Stevenson School. Good luck to the Panthers in
their quest for the Metro League Championship.
February has come to an end and March is now
blooming upon us. March is the first month of Spring, and
there are so many reasons for us to stop and marvel. Our
Adelphians have grown so much since September, and it is
time to appreciate all the simple joys they give. Some of
these qualities are their never ending energy, incredible
curiosity, magical creativity, desire to learn, inquisitive
minds, along with their exceptional enthusiasm and so
much more. It is essential that we nurture their amazing
bravery and limitless hopes in expressing their voice—
loud, soft, and everything in between. Their inexhaustible
dreams, incomparable individuality and unique talents are
important in developing successful members of
tomorrow’s community.
There are many things to look forward to during
the month of March. Aside from anticipating warmer
temperatures, new clubs will be beginning this spring. We
encourage our students to participate in extracurricular
activities as a way for them to learn creatively and
socialize with other students. Also, please keep in mind
final exams will take place at the end of the month.
Project Succeed students will be learning ways to balance
their time during finals and prioritizing their
responsibilities between school and home. Our students
will also be learning about test taking strategies to
accommodate their learning style. Lastly, the Project
Succeed Team would like to remind Adelphi families
about Adelphi Academy’s 150th Anniversary Gala on
Thursday, April 25th. This is a very important and
prestigious event and we look forward to seeing all of you
there!

exciting night for all guests and a very important
one for the Academy but this is a very special
year as Adelphi celebrates 150 years of
educational excellence. Please be reminded that
this event will serve as the Academy’s major
fundraiser of the year. Parent participation and
support is extremely important for the continued
success of our school! We hope to see
everyone there!

Good News! By Mr. Albert C. Corhan
March is a time of year filled with hope,
promise, and change. The weather takes a slow
turn for the better as Spring approaches, and
thoughts turn to the hopes of a pot of gold at the
end of the rainbow!
I am most pleased to take this
opportunity on behalf of the entire Adelphi
Academy Community to thank everyone for
their efforts and support of all of our wonderful
and exciting events up to this point. Thanks to
the support of those who contributed to the
Academy’s events, they were all once again a
success, becoming even larger and more
successful events than last year!
As you know Adelphi Academy of
Brooklyn is a non for profit organization which
survives on tuition alone. Unfortunately that
tuition does not cover the cost necessary to
educate each one of our students, each year.
Without the successful fundraising initiatives and
the support of our school community and
contributions from our loyal supporters it would
become very difficult for Adelphi Academy of
Brooklyn to continue along her noble mission.
SAVE THE DATE -- Here at Adelphi we
are most excited about our upcoming 150th
Anniversary Gala scheduled for Thursday
evening, April 25th, 2013. Once again, this year,
the annual event will be held at the very
beautiful, very elegant Gargiulo’s Restaurant in
historic Coney Island, New York and will begin

Thank you for all of your

I hope that all students will have returned from
our Winter Recess with their batteries recharged!! We
must all be mindful of the fact that as always, the academic
calendar marches on. February was another month filled
with excitement and activities. Valentine’s Day was a
sweet success as the students enjoyed exchanging flowers
and chocolates through the student government’s
fundraiser. The Book Fair was a great success as the
students truly enjoyed the process of independently
shopping for books of interest!
As the school year forges on, let me take this
opportunity to reiterate how sensitive we must be to the
various challenges and difficulties associated with students
during these crucial years of academic and social
development. Lower School students are learning to be
responsible and respectful. They are learning how to
interact with their peers and the adults around them.
Middle School students are getting their first big taste of
As the coldest depths are winter are
gradually thawing into spring, it is important to
realize that “time is of the essence” not only in
the academic sense, but also when it comes to
extracurricular, in-school service, and community
service events. In shaping the well-rounded
individual, academics first and foremost are the
foremost priority. However, it is also the
activities that the students are involved with after
school that contribute additional skill sets that
encompass the well-rounded individual. It is
imperative that your student participates in these
activities so that they can move on to the next
school year. It is a requirement, and a serious
requirement at that.
Fortunately, as we are approaching
March, there is still time for students to fulfill
these commitments. There are a myriad of
activities that have been offered to students this
year that stretch across a wide variety of areas.
Computer Club, Chess Club, and Publications
(the latter beginning in March) are all being held
from 3PM to 5PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Wednesdays. For a definitive schedule, students
should see Mr. Ortiz, who is moderating these
activities. Mrs. Hermann’s Gardening Club is
starting up during the spring, where students will
be able to get some good first hand experience
in learning how to maintain a proper garden.
Interested students should also see her for more
information.
As for myself, I am moderating the
Debate Team of both the Middle School and
Upper School. The Middle School Debate Team
meets on Thursdays during lunch and the Upper
School Debate Team meets on Mondays during
lunch. During these sessions, students have been
learning about how to brainstorm topics,
From the Assistant Head of School
By Ms. Iphigenia Romanos
conduct research on the decided topic, and learn
how to make presentations in a formal setting.
The key to this is being a good public speaker.
This does not just encompass how well one can
articulate his or her voice, but also reflects how
well read and researched a presenter is. I aim to
have both debate teams ready for a presentation
during assembly by late spring.
Students must remember that joining an
extracurricular activity does not substitute for
the extracurricular athletics requirement. They
are also to be kindly reminded that fine arts
placements on Wednesday afternoons are not a
substitute for this. In short, by the end of this
school year all students must have participated in
an extracurricular activity and an athletic activity.
Teachers have been making these
announcements, and students should see the club
moderators for more information.
It has been a most productive portion of
this year, from overseeing extracurricular
activities to working diligently in the classroom.
As we are entering further into the spring, I am
kindly announcing that it is still not too late to
reserve your tickets for the 150th Anniversary
Gala, which is being held on Thursday, April 25th
at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island. We
here at the staff are looking forward to seeing all
of you there, as it most certainly will be a night
to remember.
My best wishes to all of you as we are

self-sufficiency at school. They now must pass from class
to class without being escorted by a teacher, maintain
their own lockers, in addition to the added responsibilities
of the Middle School curriculum. Upper School students,
while older and hopefully wiser, begin to navigate the
years leading to adulthood. Their responsibility increases-
we expect more from them and we hold them to a higher
standard.
Adelphi Academy feels that during these
challenging years, students need our encouragement and
support more than ever. Our small classes, provisions for
any necessary remedial help and reinforcement, and
opportunities for communication between school and
home all help to make this transition proceed more
smoothly. And of course, students should never forget
that there is always someone to talk with here at Adelphi!
So once again, I ask that parents and teachers
continue to work together, keeping the lines of
communication open, so we may foster the development
of young adults of which we will all be proud!

With the second semester coming to an end, I
would like to thank all of you for the support you give
your child in the pursuit of excellence. It is remarkable to
see the vast transformations the middle school students
have made throughout the course of the 2012-2013
school year. They have become more responsible, self-
sufficient, move throughout the building confidently and
independently. Although the middle school years can be
quite difficult due to all its transitions, Adelphi Academy
students have not let it slow them down.
In addition to the students, the middle school
teachers have kept up the pace. As the warm weather
strolls in, the teachers have already begun taking their
lessons outside. As we are aware, environment
contributes to learning; and when students are outside
they can investigate and actively engage themselves into
the lesson using a variety of creativity and emotions.
Dr. Blash, one of the many honorees that will be
attending, is looking forward to seeing you as a
representation of our Adelphi family.
The month of March is filled with many
celebrations for the Lower School students of Adelphi
Academy. Ms. Marotto and the 1st and 2nd graders start
the month of with celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday by doing
a project and decorating the bulletin boards outside their
classroom. This special presentation will honor Dr. Seuss’
birthday. So make sure you check out the beautifully
decorated hallways of the Lower School. We also will be
celebrating the 100th day of school this month this will be
an all day event. The lower school teachers have many
activities and treats planned for the students. We will end
this celebration with a 100th day party. We are getting
ready for the fun and excitement!
The next event that the lower school students
are very excited about is Adelphi’s Annual Spring Egg
Hunt. Each student will be coloring and decorating two
eggs and that will be placed around the main floor, as well
as around our beautiful school grounds.
As the month comes to an end so does the
Morrill Term. So the 1st – 4th grade will be reviewing all of
the material that they have learned this term and
preparing to take their finals. Since the students are all so
attentive and eager to learn, I know they all will do well
on these exams. We are creating a community of life-long
learners here at Adelphi Academy of Brooklyn, a college
preparatory school.
Ms. Kiernan has been completing fun facts and
colorful projects for St. Patrick’s Day with the 5th grade,
while the fashion club is prepping for their debut with Ms.
Gutarra and Ms. Vicino. Mr. Bates is working hard with
the middle school students on playing Vida la Vida; I am
sure we will hear magnificent tunes coming from the
Adelphi Campus. Finally, Ms. Fregara will be working with
all the middle school students on the Bay Ridge Council
Photo Contest titled “People & Places.” All students in
the middle school will be participating in the contest, and
we encourage the students to creatively interpret the
theme into a beautiful piece of art.
Finally, the middle school students will be
reviewing for the Morrill Term final examinations on
March 14th-15th and March 18th- 19th. Each teacher has
carefully created outlines and reviews which will assist the
students in preparing for their final exams which will be
held on March 20, 2013 – March 22, 2013. I wish all the
Adelphi Academy Middle School students the best of luck!

event we all been waiting is approaching. We are about a

one of the few institutions that have been in existence for
this great number of years. The venue for this extravagant
event will be at the famous Gargiulo’s in Coney Island on

opportunities for communication between school and
home all help to make this transition proceed more
smoothly. And of course, students should never forget
that there is always someone to talk with here at Adelphi!
So once again, I ask that parents and teachers
continue to work together, keeping the lines of
communication open, so we may foster the development
of young adults of which we will all be proud!

hopefully we can demonstrate what can be done
by our young Adelphians when things happen to
them. Hurricane Sandy brought out very positive
community feelings on the part of our students.
Many of our students countered and are still
contributing to the relief effort in the Rockaways,

This is a very important and
prestigious event and we look forward to seeing all of you
there!

at 6:00pm. Music for the evening will be
provided by the very talented Total Soul and the
silent auction is provided courtesy of RSI
Fundraising Auctions. The annual gala is an
exciting night for all guests and a very important
one for the Academy but this is a very special
year as Adelphi celebrates 150 years of
educational excellence. Please be reminded that
this event will serve as the Academy’s major
fundraiser of the year. Parent participation and
support is extremely important for the continued
success of our school! We hope to see
everyone there!

Good News! By Mr. Albert C. Corhan
March is a time of year filled with hope,
promise, and change. The weather takes a slow
turn for the better as Spring approaches, and
thoughts turn to the hopes of a pot of gold at the
end of the rainbow!
I am most pleased to take this
opportunity on behalf of the entire Adelphi
Academy Community to thank everyone for
their efforts and support of all of our wonderful
and exciting events up to this point. Thanks to
the support of those who contributed to the
Academy’s events, they were all once again a
success, becoming even larger and more
successful events than last year!
As you know Adelphi Academy of
Brooklyn is a non for profit organization which
survives on tuition alone. Unfortunately that
tuition does not cover the cost necessary to
educate each one of our students, each year.
Without the successful fundraising initiatives and
the support of our school community and
contributions from our loyal supporters it would
become very difficult for Adelphi Academy of
Brooklyn to continue along her noble mission.
SAVE THE DATE -- Here at Adelphi we
are most excited about our upcoming 150th
Anniversary Gala scheduled for Thursday
evening, April 25th, 2013. Once again, this year,
the annual event will be held at the very
beautiful, very elegant Gargiulo’s Restaurant in
historic Coney Island, New York and will begin

have to continue to show
their sense of responsibility
to community whether on a
local, state or national level.
The one hundred hours of
community service necessary
for Graduation is a great
base from which to continue
this realm of thoughtfulness.
All of these skill
sets are involved in a larger
philosophical discussion of
what is life all about. Many
authors reference life being a
quest for meaning. A quest
where someone does
something significant, where
someone cares for others
and someone who finds the
courage to make difficult
decisions.
Adelphi Academy
presents a myriad of
opportunities both inside
and outside the classroom. It
is the Academy’s hope that
the experiential situations
will assist out young
Adelphians in their character
development. As human
beings we cannot control
what happens to us, but
I recently attended a
p r o f e s s i o n a l
conference entitled;
Creating A New
Norm. The forum was
designed as a self help
approach for school leaders
to view their schools, and
determine how to envision a
pathway for graduates to
mee t th e ch a l l en ges
presented by colleges today.
In earlier articles, I
mentioned the five minds
needed for the future, as well
as other concerns that are
germane to the question. At
this juncture, it became
apparent that my thinking
would have to take on a
more generalized approach.
Students must be able to
demonstrate critical thinking
skills. These skills will have to
be viewed through problem
solving and sound reasoning.
The entire college application
process is a good example of
how to enable our graduates
to use critical thinking skills.
It is incumbent for the
Academy to show the Senior
class how to process the
myriad of paperwork and
publicity so as to get to the
basis of what the various
colleges offer and then to
decide which school is
acceptable for the candidate.
The senior now
selecting a college must show
a degree of maturity in the
exercise of his or her life skill
a s s o t o a c h i e v e
independence. The freshman
year at college level is a daily
test of one’s life skills. The
social, the emotional and the
academic environment that
our young Adelphians find
themselves in is a constant
endeavor that has to be
mastered.
Communication skills
are key for one’s success. The
Adelphian must be able to
communicate in a clear and
precise modality what his or
her thoughts are. The spoken
word as the written word has
to be carefully crafted.
Adelphians have to
demonstrate to their new
classmates their strength of
character and civility; they
