President’s ReportHOW YA GOIN’ FRIENDS?

Well since our last show we have had some bad news, young Mark Bevis past away only 49 years of age this was very sad. He was a great eight ball player and he loved his country music, all our thoughts will go to the Bevis Family.

Moving on to our April show which was Bernie & The Bandits plus Billy Dee and Shane Johnson, our May Show was The Hoffmans plus Phil King another great day, our June show will be the man himself, Brian Letton and Cactus Martens. We are expecting another great day.

Well moving on, many thanks to all our committee workers and volunteers and kitchen staff for all the work that they have done, many thanks to our Lorraine Wakefield for the hours she puts in contacting all those artists and for the use of her home for our meetings every month it saves us heaps, also many thanks to those two ladies that sit on Joy and Fred Champions table for their help on our last show we were short of helpers in the kitchen.

Now don’t forget our JUNE SHOW IS PIES AND PASTIES PLEASE TRY AND KEEP THE CRUMBS ON THE TABLES AS IT’S HARD TO CLEAN UP AFTERWARDS. Also, so you don’t catch a cold, don’t forget to bring your COATS OR A JUMPER FOR THE WINTER MONTHS AS we don’t have HEATERS IN OUR CLUB.

If anybody wishes to help in the kitchen every month it would be appreciated that’s women or men it does not matter. Thanks to those members that donated prizes for our raffle last month and to the Slovenian Club for their donations as well, there’s no more to say so cheerio for now.

Keep it country.

Your President, Russell Byrne

LORRAINE’S ROUND-UP - April 2012April was our Easter and I’m once again amazed at how many are attending. Maybe we are doing it right or Country Music is getting bigger and bigger in the popularity stakes. The young ones still have Justin Bieber and Lady Gagga etc, that’s okay for me, having a couple of young granddaughters they have surprised me by saying they have told their teachers about me being involved in Country Music.

The band of the month was Bernie and the Bandits, they always provide great music, loved the old style dance tunes.

Special guest artist from Adelaide was Billy Dee. What can I say about this artist; Mr Magic had everyone eating out of his hands.

Then all the way from Andamooka, Shane Johnson, wonderful performer did a solo spot, then one with the band, everyone loved him. Tiffney Stroh told him to head to our club, thanks Tiffney. Tiffney, who lives near him, may be heading back to Adelaide in the near future.

Walk up artists Paul and Nathan Rohrlach from the Barossa Valley also performed.

Thanks to all, especially our Rabbit at the door handing out Easter eggs and having photos taken with her. Yes a female rabbit.

Lorraine

Note:- Amber Joy Poulton was unable to attend our April show as she was going to Tasmania to be awarded 2012 TIARA Best Vocal Collaboration award for the beautiful duet, ‘Close Enough’ with Doug Bruce. TIARA is the Tasmanian Independent Artists Recognition Awards. Congratulations Amber and Doug.

Our May show was excellent with the Hoffmans from Victoria. It was first class entertainment. They showed us not only country music but some classic like ‘Don’t Cry for me Argentina’, ‘The Rose’ and other operatic numbers.Heather also performed some comedy skits moving around in the audience (as an Elle Macpherson look alike) much to the delight of those she appreciated/molested.David also had a great voice and harmonized well with Heather.I have booked them again for April 2013, put that in your diary for April 7 2013. They have hours of entertainment

to offer.

Phil King was along to give the Hoffmans a break and he excelled as he sure can play those guitars. I enjoyed the Shadow’s numbers. Thanks to all.

The whole day was very enjoyable, I hope every Mother had a happy Mother’s Day.

It was very good to see Billy Dee, Peter Tomlinson and Ian List there as well. Ian will sing at our August show. Dave Williams from Wellington was also there.

July Show - Lee Brocky and Outback Overdrive (cont’d from page 5)the Festival Theatre in Adelaide.

Ben Furnell has been a solo performer as well, winning many awards in country festivals, including Male Vocal, Duet, and Country Rock. In Outback Overdrive he is an essential part of the band. Ben provides not only great harmonies, but creates a strong acoustic rhythm, essential in filling out the sound created in the band. His Saxophone work in the band also shows his soulful approach to his music.

Tony Ross has been playing drums for over thirty years, in many genres of music, including Country, Rock, Swing, and Jazz. He has played in most major venues in SA and performed in Bands that were a support act for International Bands, such as The Searchers and The Bachelors.

After all, a band is nothing without a great drummer!

In 2008 the band was outstanding during the prestigious Barmera Music Festival, winning an award in the band section for their performance of the Keith Urban song ‘You look good in my shirt’. More recently they played in the SACCM Stampede in Gawler, a show that highlights the outstanding achievements of artists and bands during the year.

They perform songs from various artists, including Troy Cassar-Daley, Keith Urban, The Eagles & John Fogerty.

Outback Overdrive performs a variety of genre during their shows, but mostly Rock n Roll & Country Rock.

The four members are able to capture a great atmosphere of high quality music and fun.

The year 1952 was the start to 60 years of Country Music. At the age of 18 years on April 26th Lorraine married Len Wakefield and travelled to Queensland for six weeks. We decided to check out the music scene whilst having a lovely honeymoon.

Things looked very interesting, and on returning to Adelaide Lorraine left her job at Myers and Len his at the Islington Railways workshop. The move to Queensland was a great venture appearing at clubs, hotels and TV Channel 9 opening of TV. Lorraine was the first female seen on a children’s late afternoon show.

A children’s show was then formed in a department store then moved on to the Gold Coast. Lorraine and Len stayed for nearly three years entertaining.

We moved to Sydney for another four years meeting up with Slim Dusty, Reg Lindsay, McKean Sisters, Rick & Thel, Tim McNamara just to name a few appearing on TV, Radio and the usual Clubs etc.

For many years we went to Tamworth.

We then went on to Melbourne making appearances on TV, meeting Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton and many others.

We returned to Adelaide where Lorraine gave birth to daughter Sherrilyn Lee in 1961. Sherrilyn appearred as a singer/dancer in productions of Hello Dolly, Cats, Westside Story. She is now teaching dance in Sydney. In 1967 a son was born, Brentyn, who now is a vintage car lover compering car shows etc. Neither of our children is interested in Country Music!

Lorraine and Len purchased a Punch and Judy puppet show and were very busy doing children’s shows. Brentyn came along and did a clown act. Country Music was also sung – songs like Running Bear, Bimbo, Davy Crocket, The Unicorn, Old McDonald’s Farm etc. The children

loved singing along.

Adelaide had a TV show. The compere was Roger Cardwell then Reg Lindsay. Lorraine and Len appeared as regulars on this Country Music Hour. We went on doing numerous shows around Adelaide, always entertaining, mainly on weekends.

Both went back to normal jobs, but always went to festivals, mainly Barmera, where they put their hands in the Cement Hall of Fame, as the Piccadilly Yodellers in 1989. Len had heart surgery and was then diagnosed with asbestosis lung cancer and died in July 1991.

Lorraine and Len in 1989, with a group of people started the Adelaide Country Music Club which is still going extremely well, Lorraine being the only original starter still on the committee, she has been the entertainment officer for 23 years. She lives for her Country Music.

She has a 24 year grandson, Zane, who lives in Sydney. He lived with her for a few years while his mother furthered her career. She also has two granddaughters, Isabella (10yrs old) and Georgia (11). Five years ago Georgia was diagnosed with brain cancer after a tumour was found and a year later Lorraine was diagnosed with breast cancer. Both had chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Both are now doing well.

Lorraine’s travelling days are limited to festivals, but still performs in Adelaide. Country Music keeps her going. In February this year she reached the age of 78. She will always say, “keep Country Music forever, it helps you to live longer!”
